Walking Boot of Doom

Please go away, Mr. Emmert

This would drastically decrease a coaches ability to manage a roster. It's great for the player, but terrible for a program and college basketball.

The authors comments on a team drafting a players rights seem much better for all parties involved.

@NBCSN: Could D-League players be let back into the NCAA? Mark Emmert is open to the idea: http://t.co/4gZ9FmsnP1 http://t.co/xwn1UQZcj6

Hasn’t he screwed up the NCAA and its reputation enough? It’s already a laughing stock when it comes to enforcing disciplinary issues. The whole enforcement thing is out of control, and now he wants to do this? Thanks, but no thanks.

If the player had to go back to the team that he was drafted from, then maybe I could see this happening.  For instance, what if Vonleah was sent back to Indiana for another year or two? or Zeller (even though Zeller did not go to the D-League, a team like Charlotte could have sent him back to college for another season had they wanted to instead of playing him right away at the NBA level?)  Let the NBA pay for their college tuition and whatever else their contract is, opening up a scholarship to help with attrition and uncertainty.  To prevent collusion or unmoral things, still enforce recruiting rules as they are today with regards to getting paid, agents and all that.  If any player is said to be in contact with NBA teams (unlawfully) prior to being drafted to the NBA, then they cannot come back to the NCAA?

I'm not saying I'm for this, but just looking at this in a way that it would make sense for the NCAA, Fans, Schools and the Players and throwing out another side to look at for discussion.

I think part of the theory is interesting. Maybe have more rounds of the NBA draft and allow them to pick college players and then have the college kids decide if they are going pro or staying. Larry Bird was drafted by the Celtics while still at Indiana St and chose to finish out the year and then sign. If the NBA teams can draft players and have their rights I think it works for both sides. I am honestly better off with the idea of having a plan where kids can leave straight after high school but if they choose to go to college to have to stay at least 2 or 3 years. I don't see either side making much progress anytime soon though. Each side only cares about how they are going to make money. The NBA and the NCAA could care less about the players, its all about the money to them

I don't know. On the surface I like the idea (though, I'd say the teams should be forced to use the NCAA as the D-league, you can't go and come back but you can be drafted and stay), but it makes the draft so incredibly risky for the NBA. While I can't think of any examples off the top of my head, what if you draft a guy after a year and he gets injured playing college ball. You don't get to have your own doctors looking at him, you can't control when he plays again, heck maybe he never plays again.

I'd much prefer an "in for 3 years" rule. Add a little stability. Even with an option to skip college all together, because who needs those kids anyway?

If this is allowed then tell me what should hold every single player to not try to get into the D league. Theres no backward circumstance here. The D league would be flooded with MORE underprepared/physically unable kids with no sense of appreciation that an education could offer. Besides, haven't we watched the NBA long enough to realize that since more and more college kids pop for the draft that the product being displayed on the floor is garbage. The NBA has roughly a handful of teams worth their chops and the rest are filled with journeymen and kids that have no idea how to play the pro game. Its like Mr. Emmert is choosing to forget that an overwhelming majority of kids who do choose to enter the draft don't end up making it long term and ultimately end up deadass broke. Hell, some vets end up broke. I just saw where Antoine Walker is so broke he doesn't even have a car. The NBA should focus on fixing their brand and the NCAA should be focused on the STUDENT-athlete. An education is the only thing in this world we truly have total personal control of. I care about education more than money, rings, or banners...its sad to see that notion become more and more obsolete.
