No kidding! When I played a steal was a worthy stat. But a deflection? Is this what this coach values? I feel nauseous

Deflections are a pretty legit stat. Crean may overvalue them, but I think you and others seriously undervalue them.

Here's an article from NPR where Pitino talks about how important they are to winning.

BGleas who worked with the Celtics in PR, I believe, even pointed out how big a deal deflections are to coaches. This mocking of the deflections stat is kind of funny

You're forgetting the couple hundred timeouts he saved during his first 6 seasons....oh wait, they don't carry over.

Maybe he is thinking one night he'll open up his timeout vault and be able to ice the free throw shooter by calling 500000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 timeouts in a row.

He'd save them for when he needs 8000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 timeouts, then proceed to not use those.

What good does a deflection do? So what if you touch the ball with no change of possession. Get a steal. Be in a good defensive position. Don't let your man get a good shot. Box out and no offensive rebounds. Now if someone fires the ball at your face, well then I suppose I could get behind a deflection. I never even heard of this stat when I played. I don't think it existed then. That is like saying how many shots did we take? It does not matter if they don't go in or they are low % shots.

You seem to have a misconception on what the deflection stat is. Deflections aren't counted on tipped rebounds, they are tipping/deflecting the dribble away from the opposing offensive player, tipping/deflecting a pass away from an opposing offensive player. They don't contribute directly to a steal or block, but work to disturbing the offensive rhythm, which is one of the biggest goals of every defense in the history of defense. Deflections are generally considered a purely defensive stat, whereas rebounds are subjective towards what end of the court your on.

Since we're on the subject of stats that don't mean much of anything, the +/- stat is beyond meaningless yet it is kept track of. Steals are also a completely misleading stat, depending on who the book keeper is they can decide who to attribute a steal to. A lot of the time the player causing the turnover doesn't get anything in the stat column. Those are just two examples of stats that are kept track of that are meaningless or completely misleading. Ricky Rubio is consistently one of the top guys in the NBA for steals, yet he is horrible defensively.

The team steal stat is what means something as do team turnovers. Both which lead to other opportunities for the opponent and whoever wins those stats most often wins the game. You are comparing individual stats with team stats. Nice deflection though! :D

Go talk to coaches then get back to me. Or literally read any article about advanced statistics about defense

Are you a stalker or just a member of Crean's bible study group? I don't need to get back to you. I was never even speaking to you. When Crean leaves will you take your deflections and follow him down the road? I think that Crean's followers try to take control of discussion boards to deflect  :cheese:  any criticism away from Crean. It is sad that honest, constructive, and objective discussion is being blocked by this tactic. it will be such a breath of fresh air when he and they depart. Then we can get back to the business of winning national championships and being proud of our players again.

Looks like a guy who won a National Championship and just hit 700 career wins thinks deflections are pretty important.

....... Care to explain how I'm defending Crean. Care to explain how I'm trying to control the boards. Care to explain how I'm being a stalker by responding to to someone who quoted me. This place is for discussions. The only one trying to squash that is you

You'll find (if you care to peruse the boards) that this site has a very balanced mix of Crean haters, Crean critics, Crean skeptics, Crean realists, Crean supporters, Crean fans and fans who are somewhere in between. Most of us (the VAST majority) get along fine and can respect each other, without trying to "take over" the board. Sure, threads sometimes swing heavily one way, but it balances. Most here are happy to listen to another viewpoint without being nasty or childish. Just because you don't agree, you don't need to provoke others by emphasizing the topic of contention.

Actually this game might be a good time to try to put two bigs on the floor at the same time, then when one overreacts to a head or ball fake there will be a shot blocker at the rim and not a 6'3'' guard.

Wisconsin had 6'9", 6'10", and 7' on the court at one time yesterday. We could only wish.
