Louisville Recruiting

Honest question.

Do you think Tom Crean is aware the general thought expressed in this thread? (which I agree with) Because when you hear him tell it we are doing just GREAT!

Crean says a lot of things. Sometimes I wonder if even he believes some of the stuff he says.

IUryan,

Crean is a smart, intelligent guy and maybe to his own detriment sometimes by overthinking statistics and such.  He says the correct things publicly.  But I think he is fully aware of the general thought addressed in this thread.

When you look at his recruiting efforts.  He goes after 5 stars, then 4 stars, then Up and Comers/Late Bloomer types, then 3 stars, then the lesser players.

It wasn't until LATE 2014 recruiting that he had to go to that final level for recruits for the Priller/April type.

He knows what the fanbase thinks and he knows he is missing "his" targets with regularity.

He knows that Talent wins.  He is trying to accumulate talent, but having a very trying time right now!

Good discussion as usual.  Crean has to be aware of how critical this season is and has to know the heat is rising---I think that's why you see the Canadian trip, last minute recruiting for an impact big, and finally an admission from him that he would have booed some of his decisions last year too.

Best analogy I have heard is this season is a fork in the road---we have to get back to winning big or the fanbase will insist on change.  Crean has done so many things right----academics, better team culture, 1st big title in years, two sweet 16s, and numerous wins over ranked teams---but he now has to show he can do it consistently. I am rooting for him to get the job done but I have said it before and I will say it again--Indiana will not put up with two subpar years in a row---Ask Mike Davis!

Go IU----just win now!

Good summary. IMO, I saw him actually make improvements in his weaknesses last year. Hopefully that continued.

I see it like this....Crean makes terrible coaching decisions time after time....IF he was an elite X's and O's coach, he might be able to get away with 1-2 4 star or 5 star and the rest role players BUT he is not...in order for Crean to win, he would need to have a stacked deck and it is looking like we are not going to see that again for awhile...

Well put. I sometimes wonder if he in a bubble of thinking he doing well because the people around him tell him that. Because as a fan living in Kentucky this SUCKS.

I wouldn't say that. I think he knows he's getting his ass kicked around but wants people to think things are going well. The "no need to reply, i won't read it" comment he made last spring said a lot.

Crean knows---and he's trying---but sometimes the recruits just ain't buyin' what you're sellin'! They are just like Hoosier Nation and in a wait-n-see mode to see what happens this year!  And other schools are using this uncertainty against us in recruiting! Win this year and we're fine! Lose this season and......well--- Let's win!

Slithering all under it is more like it.

It makes me sick to think basketball has gotten to this point where a shoe company can dictate where a kid goes to school.

It really has nothing to do with pride  for respective schools or states any more.

I think it is important to remember that IU throughout all of its history has never and probably will never be the school that brings in a class full of 5* players. Knight never had a class like that. No one who has coached at IU has. I know everyone is going to comment back to my post with the "well good coaching is the reason" and blah blah blah. If you play good team basketball, it doesn't matter if you have a roster full of 5 star players. Look at "The Movement". 3 players in the top 100 , all 4 * and only one has actually ever lived up to anything. I know there are tons of schools that bring in huge classes of 5* players every year like Arizona, Duke, UK, UL , etc, but then you have also have to look at schools like Witchita State, Wisconsin, Nebraska (last year), Butler (in years past), VCU ,amongst a ton of other teams that succeed in the tournament and consistently knock off these "blue blood", 5* recruiting monsters. I think team basketball is more important than a group of 5* star talent. I think if we can consistently get a class of mostly 4* players with a 3* and a 5* thrown in, we will be successful. I think we as Indiana fans are just really quick to forget the talent that we have been able to nab the last couple of years. Troy (4 star), Stan Robinson (4 star), JBJ (5 star), Rob Johnson (4  star), and Vonleh (5 star) were all players that were highly recruited and we were able to out recruit anyone else for them.  Other schools with continue to bring in huge classes, but IU will most likely continue to recruit they same way we have been for years, and just try to develop those players.

Side note: I really enjoy going back and seeing some of the players that have been brought in over the years that weren't hardly rated at all and were great players. Players like Roth(3 star), Hulls (3 star), Abel ( 2 star), Sheehey (3 star), Oladipo (3 star), Verdell Jones( 3 star) were all players that were contributors in one way or another on an IU squad. There are also a decent amount of players who were recruited to IU as 3 stars who went onto other programs and were contributors on good teams as well.

How many UK recruits were initially committed somewhere else?

Terrence Jones

Marquis Teague

Trey Lyles

Anyone else? If this kid adds to the list, that's a surprisingly high number of recent recruits that switched. The selling points they claim to have brought them there were still present when they made their first choice.

Calipari is the best unproven cheater in the game.

And people wonder why IU doesn't sell like it used to. We have never been and hopefully never will be a program that sells out to the Kentucky way.
