Louisville Recruiting

Recommended Posts

I don't agree or disagree with what they are saying but the Jerry Meyers of the world know a lot more about recruiting than I do. There are a lot of articles written on the subject. It could all be coincidence for all I know.

-Zeller and Ferrell were both snubbed by the Jordan Brand game while both were chosen for the McDonald's Game which is sponsored by Adidas.

-Vonleh and Blackmon Jr. got selected to play in both All American games.

-Williams was passed on by the McDonald's game but was chosen for the Jordan Brand game. The opposite of what the gurus think. I believe Boo Williams and Nike are linked together though.

-Jurkin played in a Jordan Brand regional All Star game in Charlotte, NC. of North Carolina prep players. I couldn't find anything else on him.

I don't think that it is about the shoes and apparel. I think they are saying it is more about the sponsorship. XYZ company has been contributing money for a future prospect. His team travels the country to play in tournaments and attending skill camps where he gets exposure to college coaches all on the dime of XYZ company. The AAU coach of the prospect is probably paid by XYZ co. When the prospect chooses the school sponsored by ABC co., he is left out on island by himself. The prospect's supporting cast may no longer be supporting him and they may not be excited about his college decision. He may or may not get selected for select All Star games. His ball club may lose funding from XYZ Co. Of course all this is just speculation because no prospect has ever said he was decommitting because the school had the wrong shoe company.

No one can ever knock Crean with the whole Mo Creek situation. The guy got a million chances at IU. Crean gave him chance after chance and I think in the end he saw that the coaching staff was too worried about his injury history to give him the playing time he thought he deserved, so he transferred and did fairly well (albeit at a much lower competition level).
Same could be said with guys like Hollowell and Etherington. Hollowell was a freakin starter for part of last year but had no inklings of desire or fire in him at all. Etherington, a "shooter" that passed up every open shot he probably every had. I think Crean grew frustrated with him because of this as well. I honestly think the only reason he played so much last year was because of our lack of depth, nothing else. He looked scared out there! I didn't lose sleep about any one of these transfers and no one else should have either.
Crean is not running players off, but a lot of the time players can read the writing on the wall. they can stay and ride the bench (deservingly) or transfer somewhere else and play. I think it's for the best in both situations

so let me get this straight. It is best that we gave up on Mo when he was finally back to healthy, a senior and ready to be the leader of a tournament team? He lead a team to the tourney last year and gave them the leadership that we so desperately needed on last years squad but it was best. Makes sense

You can't compare the competition level that he played against with George Washington with what we faced in the big ten. I give them credit for making it to the tournament. Did we give up on him? There was nothing official stating that they just kicked him out. He said at the end of the year that he wanted to be closer to home to play and so I think that he did just that. There are no facts to support your claim that we "gave up" on him or forced him out. Just remember that Creek got hurt in the tournament and they lost in the second round which, according to people around him, is just as unacceptable as even making the tournament hahah.

I have to admit I find it somewhat humorous that this thread started as a "UL --envy thread" because of all of their great recruits and then arguably their best recruit---Blakeney---decomitted! But of course---many of our fans continue to gripe about IU's recruiting when almost every program has its ebbs and flows!  I personally think our recruiting has been fine and that is not our problem.  Our problem has been youth and lack of experienced players due to lack of 3 and 4 year players in the program! Experienced players is where you get your leadership from and they can teach the youngsters!  Instead of writing them off---let's develop the players we have!
