Steve Alford, future IU coach?

Recommended Posts

Thanks for answering schoosier. I was just curious if anything could happen to change your mind about Crean. I am still on the fence about his future but I hope he is successful because he does so many things right and-- frankly -- I am tired of the revolving door and want stability for the program.  As some have said--Knight ain't walking through that door---and I don't think Alford is the answer either.  Crean brought us back but must win this year as I don't think he will survive two subpar years in a row.  I hope he wins this year and I hope you-- schoosier --and and the rest of Hoosier Nation want that to happen as well.  IU is bigger than its Coach and this is our team and the boys deserve our support!

Stability is extremely important... losing programs overreact and fire coach after coach. Kind of like IU has done recently. Give the guy a chance. If this year is horrible, or if this year is average and the next year isn't much better, there's no question whatsoever that he should be fired. But people act like their evaluation of him is the simple truth and that IU should move on now because ole Tommy Crean isn't good enough to be the coach of my Hoosiers. It's such crap.

"Kind of like IU recently". Mike Davis had 6 years and were trending downward big time his last two. Sampson came in as a cheater and still cheated here. He also brought in kids that did not fit the IU standard. Crean is in year 6.

We have not been a program that quickly turns over coaches unless you think we should have given Sampson more time.

For many schools that record would equate to a great coach.  The difference being we have higher expectations. :)

Yeah, mid majors.

Let's change the circumstances ever so slightly.  Forget the name Tom Crean, in this alternate universe he doesn't even exist, there's a coach named John Smith.  Coach John Smith has 9 years under his belt, and has a winning percentage of 66% with only 1 conference championship and only 1 year getting past the second round of the NCAAs.  UK hires Coach Smith to replace Gillespie instead of squid; we're not saying "he's a great coach", we'd be saying he's not much of a coach.  Fast forward 6 years and after 15 years as a coach he's added 1 conference title (now a total of 2, in 15 YEARS) and two Sweet 16s (after 15 years he's gotten past the Sweet 16 a staggering once) and he's coming off a year where he missed the NIT with 2 McDs All-Americans.  We're not saying "he's a good coach, he just needs time", we're laughing and hoping they keep him around so we don't have to worry about them doing much.  Find out they gave him a top 10 contract?  Forget about it.

Actually, this is year 7.  No, wait, 4 years don't count so it's only year 3.

That might be the best way I've seen the argument against Crean put. If his resume were at a rival, we'd be fine if that rival kept him.

Yeah, mid majors.

True. Unfortunately Indiana's fan base is so large and diverse that there are countless who don't actually have real knowledge of the game.

Your wrong again on this one. Indiana's fanbase is probably the most knowlegeable of any in the country. By growing up with the game, you learn it. How many other fanbases are talking basketball this time of year?

Plenty...... and again the arrogance of some of you about our fan bases' knowledge of the game is kind of obnoxious. Just because there are more of us and we like to talk about how knowledgeable about the game that doesn't make it so

Always wondered what Donovan was waiting for. You'd think he'd want another challenge. NBA is in his future at some point, however. I do like Gregg Marshall quite a bit, but I don't think Indiana fans will be satisfied with anything other than Knight or Brad Stevens.

Knight? I think maybe 1% of the fan base would be happy if any of the Knights  being brought in. Most have realized that would be a disaster waiting to happen, what kid would want to come play for them

If we can all keep an open mind until after the season----there is going to be a lot to enjoy about this team.  A lot of talent--better chemistry---and speed--athleticism---and shooting.  I am staying positive and hoping for great things from a team that should be fun to watch!

After the season ---we can all look back and talk about Crean and say--He Stays or He Gone!

I hope we surprise and he stays!

So an offense that is a bunch of isolation plays, hoping that Yogi, or whoever is our best playmaker at the time, does something good? Yay?

Haha, no it isn't. Read the boards. Listen to the nonsense at games. We are great at arrogance though! And who cares if we're talking basketball this time of year? All that says is we're too stupid to realize how important football is. Of course there is also this amazing thing called not having a one track mind, and being able to enjoy multiple sports. One doesn't need to have the same "expectations" argument every day ad nauseum.
