Steve Alford, future IU coach?

Recommended Posts

He's not good at x's and o's check. He's not good at subbing check. So basically between the lines he is terrible. And about that 500 page playbook that doesn't include a decent inbounds play. He surely stole one from Izzo but you still have to execute it. Crean is a very good administator but horrible coach check mate. Hope the AD is already reaching out, cause march will be here soon.

You sir, are definitely a troll. No posts that you make attempt to further conversations.

Read my 400 posts and you will see I'm much more than that. But anything to make you feel better sure doesn't bother me. I can only imagine how one must feel never being able to celebrate what IU basketball really is. I somewhat feel your pain.

Schoosier---I am curious---are you going to watch the games this year? What happens to your opinion if IU flat gets it done--finishes in the top 5 in the Big Ten--- and then makes a deep tourney run thanks to our deep backcourt?  Would that change your opinion of Crean or the state of the program?

I'm not Schoosier but...

I will watch the games.  It will have only a small change in my opinion of Coach Crean.

My opinion of Crean is:  Great ambassador of IU; Great administrator of the program; Decent recruiter; Average coach.

I agree with jmsgws.

I think Crean does an excellent job ( along with his staff ) getting players to focus on academics and graduate. After the Sampson debacle, that is a major accomplishment. But he is still an average coach at best.

I agree.

My son and I have talked about this a lot during games and he has always brought up the sub patterns and the timing of them. They seem to be preset and have nothing to do with the flow of the game.I think that he tries to wear a team down with fresh players playing at a hyper pace. The problem i see, and this is just my opinion, is in todays game there are so many stoppages due to TV that kids dont wear down like that.

I think what it does a lot of times is kill momentum and let the other team back in.Hopefuly all the booing last year had some kind of affect on coach but he seems really inflexable to me.

I do think it is a warranted critique of Crean but it always amazes me when keyboard coaches criticize Crean's subbing, etc. What would your rotation have been last year? Who separated themselves? There's a lot more to it than simply watching the games on television. Not saying he shouldn't be criticized for certain situations, etc. but people act like it is easy to coach.

With the start of the B1G channel I have been able to see most of the games. So as an alumni being born and raised in indiana yes I will continue this year. My opinion of Crean won't change if he were somehow get us to a top 5 conference finish. I don't see a deep tourney run at all. He reminds me of a player that is always forcing the game instead of letting it come to him. He coaches from a 3 x 5 card rather than observing what's happening on the floor. His sub patterns never take into account a hot hand, and the Penn St inbounds debacle was probably the worst coaching I have ever seen at IU including Davis. His maniacal pacing and clapping would be acceptable if he coached, but he is more of a cheerleader for the team and even motioning to the fans. His unbecoming behavior on the bench is unprofessional, distracting to his study of the game, and unflattering to the officials. I have rarely seen him use the technical foul to help his team and his use of timeouts usually are not made correctly. I have said I think he is a good person and cares about his kids, but not a coach at the level we need at IU. Time was on his side 3 years ago but definately not anymore.

So your answer is no. No matter what he does your opinion will be unchanged. Which is the definition of ignorance. Nothing can convince you your opinion may be incorrect.

I just want us to win, and obtain stability as a program.

Sent from my place of advanced, analytical thinking: the toilet.

Stability is extremely important... losing programs overreact and fire coach after coach. Kind of like IU has done recently. Give the guy a chance. If this year is horrible, or if this year is average and the next year isn't much better, there's no question whatsoever that he should be fired. But people act like their evaluation of him is the simple truth and that IU should move on now because ole Tommy Crean isn't good enough to be the coach of my Hoosiers. It's such crap.

And if IU were to fire him for Steve Alford? My God. I would love to see the reaction from some of our fans who criticize Crean's coaching record to no end. Alford hasn't had the adversity and he's still done less than Crean.

If IU makes a change, it better have a big timer lined up. Or it's gonna slip and slip fast.

Agreed. If Crean gets fired, IU's next hire has to be a slam-dunk.

Edit: For the record, I am not looking forward to Crean getting fired. I would like to see him improve as a coach. But as Woodson1980 said, Crean's coaching style tends to be inflexible so hoping for major changes in his performance at this point may be unrealistic.

Pretty much how I feel, although I'd say good (definitely not great) recruiter.  As a "coach" I think he's in over his head at this level.  In 15 years he has a total of 2 conference championships and gotten past the Sweet 16 once over 10 years ago.  In the better part of 20 years.  That's really not that good.  There are posters that to say Cal isn't much of a "coach" and he was more successful than that before he ever got to UK.

I stand by what I've said before, the only way Crean will get any faith back from me is to go to the Elite 8 this season.

He doesn't have the track record to warrant the seemingly unlimited leash people want to give him.

For many schools that record would equate to a great coach.  The difference being we have higher expectations. :)
