Steve Alford, future IU coach?

Recommended Posts

Appreciate the information as that is what message boards are for-----just hope it doesn't turn into another Crean bash-fest!
Steve Alford was awesome as a player---but his coaching credentials aren't really any better then Crean's.

We have our Coach---everybody (including him) knows he has to win this year....If he doesn't ---and we don't make the NCAA tournament--- then the heat will be turned up and we can all debate who the next coach should be...

Until then---My team is on the floor! And--my Coach is on the floor too!

I personally think we win this year--Go Hoosiers!

I second this. Thank you.

The heat's already turned up. Hope he got an inbounds play from all his cuddle time with Bo this summer. It may make the difference in an NiT bid.

He could just borrow Bo's players for the execution or send our players up for a summer with the grinch.

I bet Bo has a position on the staff for him if that seat becomes too hot. On second thought, I'm sure the rest if the B1G coaches would throw a couple hundred thousand IU's way in order to keep coach in Btown so they have guaranteed wins every year.

Isn't that pretty much what every thread turns into hahahahaha

There is probably a pretty good, legit reason for this. He provided 2 years of what IU fans expect! You don't see UL fans ripping Pitino, or UK ripping Calipari, or UK ripping Self, or Wisconsin fans ripping Bo, or MSU fans ripping Izzo, or Arizona fans ripping whatever the heck his name is.........(Miller)

If the Coach is doing his job to the expectations of the fans, all things are great. He did for 2 years, but not enough. There is a very good reason why IU fans are pissed. We are about the only Blue Blood program not playing or recruiting like a Blue Blood.

I will root for IU hardcore with my head to toe IU gear, but I am not in the least happy with the direction of things.

Understand and respect your opinion WayneHoosier---but don't agree with it----yet. I like our talent and all blue bloods have down years as well. You just mentioned UK---just 2 years ago with all their McD AA's they missed the NCAA and then lost in the first round of the NIT. They turned it around the very next year.  Last year was our down year and we must turn it around this year. I believe we will.  If we do--- we will be back on track. If we don't---I will join you in your camp!

We can resume this thought mid season or post season. If we struggle, this year will be ugly. I don't personally want to endure another season like that. Please, don't compare us to UK or any of those other teams. No equal comparison can be made. Not even the UK year. Best player injured etc, etc, etc. Plus continued success on the court and recruiting never faltered like ours has.

It bothers me how people want to point to our "17th ranked recruiting class" as a measure of success. It's started great, thank goodness, but ended horrendously. Those problems have lingered into 2015 and 2016 (people will scoff, but we already have been cut by several top players, and lost our supposed "lead" on others. Leaf, Gordon)

Can this IU team OVERachieve? Yes and by god, I hope we do, but TRENDs are awful NOW!

I heard Steve had a choice between red kool-aid and blue kool-aid and chose red. Sources tell me he is close to being Indiana's next coach. If this is true, what is he saying we don't already know? If Crean doesn't produce, he will get canned. No breaking news here.

I agree,

Ky as much as i hate them had just won a national championship. We went to a sweet 16 and looked lost against a team our coach had played against countless times. Not the same. We lost to an illinois team when we had them beat by subbing the entire squad and playing zone against a team thats only strength was outside shooting. To me that was when things started south. Not to mention the Wisky game where  the same thing happened with the mob subs.

Follow that year up with (well you know) and we are in trouble.

Ky AKA the Antichrist as far as performance is concerned is miles ahead.

IU's problem is that we just haven't had a couple of down years, we have had a couple of down decades.

CampCrean, I can't tell if you are being sarcastic about sources telling you Alford is close to being IU's next coach if Crean is fired. Have you really heard that? If so, I am surprised.

Now I'm not sure if you're being sarcastic.

I was being sarcastic. I didn't make the transition from smartass to actual comments very well. I meant that what Alford allegedly said isn't new to any of us. If Crean has a bad year or two he's gone. Don't need Steve "hide the rape" Alford to tell me that.

You'd be surprised to find that most other schools complain about their coach as well. UCLA fans were already talking about getting rid of Alford last year. If you go onto some Duke sites, most of the fans on those sites were calling for Coach K's retirement (forced) because of them getting upset last year.

And the two years before that

I didn't list those teams because of knowledge of that behavior.

Some complaints are legitimate some aren't.

I would say our gripes with Crean are justified to an extent. It just seems like for our fanbase we take any opportunity to call for his head rather than specific things. He's not a good X and Os guy. He makes terrible substitutions. But I always remind myself of where we were and where we got back to. It took Crean time to build that team so I'm more lenient. I also give him a mulligan for his first three seasons. But after this year if we miss the NIT and don't have 2015 guys on the way, I will definitely question whether he belongs here. For now, he has gotten us to the tourney twice and had us ranked #1 for almost a whole season. He has to prove what he can do when he doesn't have all the pieces. He has to prove he can adjust his coaching style for the team he has, not the team he wants them to be. *Cue me regretting bringing this up*

As much as I've talked about Crean's coaching record not being particularly impressive for 15 years of experience, Alford's is even worse.

Alford has made the gotten to the Sweet 16 just twice in over 20 years, and has won or tied for the conference title a total of 6 times in his 23 year career.  No thanks.

He's not good at x's and o's check. He's not good at subbing check. So basically between the lines he is terrible. And about that 500 page playbook that doesn't include a decent inbounds play. He surely stole one from Izzo but you still have to execute it. Crean is a very good administator but horrible coach check mate. Hope the AD is already reaching out, cause march will be here soon.
