Peter Jurkin leaves Indiana

Recommended Posts

I just wish I could have actually seen him play more than 30 seconds in about 2 games. but I  hope he does well in his future.I'm not feeling a sense of loss at his leaving, he was our phantom center, never got to play, have no idea what he could have done.

Feel bad for how it went here with Peter, seemed like a real good kid with the worst of luck. Good luck to him in his future endeavors, wherever they lead him. From a basketball standpoint, it was the best solution for both sides. Would be neat for him to have a similar ending to his career as Mo Creek.

What I don't get is that if he couldn't play due to injuries then why does he seek a program where he can be on the court more? That doesn't make any sense.

From the IU website:

Bloomington, Indiana - Indiana University men's basketball coach Tom Crean has announced that center Peter Jurkin, whose playing career has been limited and hampered the last two years at IU and previously in high school by various leg ailments, will look to transfer to a school seeking more playing time.

"Peter has indicated his desire to try and find a program where he can get on the court more," said Crean. "He has had an uphill battle health-wise since he arrived. He believes he can get to a point where he can contribute at a level greater than what he is able to do here. Our priority is that he can obtain his education and he always is welcome to do that and be part of our program at IU."

Jurkin, a 7-0, 230-lb. center, played 18 minutes in 11 games and scored two points this past season. He was limited to three games in 2012-13 and is eligible for a medical redshirt. He played eight games this past year and earned Academic All-Big Ten honors.

"I want to thank Coach Crean and everyone on the staff for helping me through my injuries and the death of my father," said Jurkin. I will always consider myself a Hoosier and think it is best if I look at another opportunity to pursue my education and continuing my playing career. Physically, I still have work to do but will hopefully be up to the challenge."

I had the same thoughts, but I'm guessing he realized it's very difficult to essentially sit out 3 years and then get a ton of minutes at a Big Ten school. Probably figures he transfers now and next year is his red shirt year while he rehabs. Wouldn't be surprised to see him at an NAIA school or D2.

Very bad timing imo but they must have gotten more bads news from Dr. Conversation probably went something like this. "Peter, you're still not healthy and prognosis is not good long term. Because of this I am willing to keep you on scholarship as medical hardship but you will not be able to play. You are a good kid and we want to keep you in the program". Peter says "I think I can still play; I understand and can you help me find another school?" Other than timing which may have been because of prognosis, I think Crean did a good job waiting to see if he could one day contribute. Obviously he won't for us, but I wish him the best. I think he had a ton of upside and I certainly liked him as a project over Jobe, Bawa and Guy Marc. Good luck Peter Jurkin!

Looks like my handle has become much less likely...

In all seriousness though, this is the most unfortunate transfer this year, besides Fischer. The program and team loved him and he was a class act here. Always had a smile on despite his awful luck with his health. Sad to see him go, but I hope another program has a better opportunity to help him get back on the court.

Sent from my place of advanced, analytical thinking: the toilet.

Yeah, I am with all of you here. This one is sad, but foreseen for some time. He clearly had injury problems, but more importantly, he didnt have Big Ten quality skills.

When people expect 3 stars to be the next Oladipo/Sheehey, they are more likely the next Abel, Jurkin, Etherington, Capobianco, Hartman, etc, etc.. Abel wasn't too bad at all but you catch my drift.

That is why the Priller and April signings are easy to scoff at especially. Hartman is nowhere near AEtherington skill either.

Indiana basketball is in the dumps. I would like to have 10 HIGH skill players on roster, I don't even care if the other 3 are projects/lowend recruits but as a top 25 type program, there is no way we shouldn't ALWAYS have 10 Quality players on roster. And yes, that is considering transfers and early entrees. I am tired of the momentum of our program......

10 high quality players?  We beat Incarnate Word for a recruit, and hosted a kid that was underwhelming in the MVC.  That's not good enough?
