Scouting a potential Crean replacement

Recommended Posts

What has Shaka done besides a final four, which I think was a little fluky, and winning against inferior competition.

I'm surprised some would even consider a coach that managed to lose to Tom Crean in the NCAA Tournament.

Don't bother to point out the numerous non-negative posts I've made this evening, it's all good lol.

I'm not ready to fire Tom yet, but one coach I like is half-time tweeter Nebraska coach Tim Miles.  He's doing a great job with the little Huskers and will be worth watching to see how he improves the club over the next couple years. To me he could be a potential candidate, although I don;t know that we'd be able to or allowed to pull a coach from another B1G school. It isn't really concerning to me right now though, because as I said before, it's not time to fire Tom yet.

Sorry he is not not a fan in my opinion. Others will agree.

And others will disagree, I'm trying to make everything non-personal but you go and trash me anyway. Just because I'm not your picture perfect idea of a forum poster doesn't make me any less of a fan than you.

Does it really matter who you would replace Crean with?? Most of you would be ready to fire them with the first underperforming season they had. What a flipping joke. What happened to backing your team. Think about this if Crean is fired or leaves the program will ultimately lose talented players with him. I don't know about the rest of you but I don't want to return to the first CTC years again. That was awful painful to watch. Still time to make a run with this team. Go Hoosiers!!! GO CTC!!!! Some of the blame also falls on players too. They are a TEAM.

I actually posted on this on another site a couple weeks back. Not that CTC should be fired this year, and he won't...BUT why couldn't potential replacements include some younger up and coming type guys? I mean, what's wrong with a Michael White, Bryce Drew, etc...? Hoping that it wouldn't happen, but say we miss the tourney this year, next, and then CTC was gone....Why wouldn't we entertain some younger, talented coaches like that?

Michael White in 2 years, "In his first season, White led the program to their first appearance in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament Championship Game. By the next season, Louisiana Tech although picked 4th by the Western Athletic Conference Pre-Season Coaches Poll, had a stretch of 18 straight wins leading to a conference championship tie, garnering the first AP ranking in over 20 years, and a NIT tournament win" I believe this year they are currently near the top of the C-USA at 20-5, 8-2

The previous year before he took over, they were woefully bad - like 12-20 bad....

Another lazy day in the Carolinas with snow and ice. The kids are home again and I get to think about how we lost that game for the fifth time. It all comes back to coach so I will play along.

1. Brad Stevens. Obvious choice based on credentials and pedigree. A full year of NBA travelling away from family may be enough to get him to his dream job. Realistically, he won't be going anywhere.

2. Greg Marshall. I watched him at Winthrop get to the tournament 7 years and he has done an awesome job at Whichita St. Utilizes juco players to fill needs and is a consumate professional. I was really disappointed when South Carolina didn't hire him and chose Frank Martin instead. Frank has won 1 conference game in year two. Sound familar?

3. Fred Hoiberg. Outside the box and he hasn't been a head coach long. He played in the league for a number of years and assisted at Iowa St before the hire. I watched a few of their games and his teams are prepared. Plus after watching Creans sideline antics for 6 years, a professional court demeanor would be a must. No cheerleading, frantic pacing and clapping, and for Gods sake stay off the court.

4. Past Indiana players now in the coaching profession. I would consider any and all of them. Randy wittman, Keith Smart, Mike Woodson, Steve Alford, Dane Fife or any of the others would be encouraged to submit resumes. Dakich would not be considered or Kent Benson lol.

There is my list. As far as Creans 14 mil buyout, make one call to the Simons. Borrow the money which could be paid back on our future post season NCAA tournaments. Or another idea. Hold a teleathon like the Pacers did to come up with the cash to join the NBA. The money from alumni would be raised in 12 hoiurs or less. Also, don't forget Mark Cuban. He hates the NCAA but loves IU more and this would give him incentive to rejoin IU basketball.

  • With the buyout for Crean, there wouldn't be much money to get a marquee name.  Best coach I have seen in the last 3 years not named Brad Stevens (High School, College or Pro) is Scott Heady at Carmel.  Took over the program after the sexual assault problems and turned out 2 straight state championships and well on his way to a third.  His teams would remind you of kids playing a pick up game at the Y, but he beats everybody.  Takes away the opponets 2 best players and never lets up.
