(2016) C Thon Maker

Recommended Posts

I thought if he came in December he wouldn't be draftable until 2017 anyway? It doesn't strike me as the best move to play for a semester then take a year off and hope to still be a high pick.

The draft eligibility rules say that the player has to turn 19 in the calendar year of the draft and that they must be one year removed from high school. So as long as he meets those requirements I think he is good

Year removed is a relative term to not graduating THAT spring.

But wouldn't he only be a half year removed from graduating? He would graduate in December, start at IU the same December, then the draft is in July. Or am I reading this wrong?

If I remember correctly it's a binary thing and they round up. So .5 year = 1

I disagree. The language is actually:

The player (A) is or will be at least 19 years of age during the calendar year in which the Draft is held, and (B) with respect to a player who is not an international player (defined below), at least one (1) NBA Season has elapsed since the player’s graduation from high school

Season starts in October, if he graduates after October then he shouldn't be eligible until 2017.

Doesn't he qualify as an international player since he is going to school in Canada?

The international clause threw me off. Thanks for the clarification!

It's the same as going the first semester than dropping out or being kicked off the team he can go to the draft once he is removed one year from highschool

But if he comes here in December, wouldn't it be assumed that he graduated high school that same December? That's much less than a year.

It's not the same at all since it's a timing question. It's the same as... going only the second semester. He could presumably not play the next year and it would be the same as that but, why would he?

Tidbit on Thon from Biancardi's Nike Summit summary. (I don't think has been posted. Sorry if it has.)

3. Thon Maker’s future

Thon Maker -- who was the No. 1 player in our rankings until he moved to play his senior year of high school in Canada -- was active, grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds and showing he still plays with a strong motor. He has put on weight, which is vital for his development, but he struggled to score on the blocks because of his inability to get low and play low against a set defender.

“Thon has to first finish high school and graduate, which should be in August or possibly later, and he could enroll into a college in September or December," Maker's guardian, Ed Smith, said. "Our other option is to stay at Orangeville Prep in a post-grad year and play with his brother Matur.

IMO best option for him. Go back to Orangeville Prep for postgrad and reclass back to 2016. Also would allow him another year to work on obviously his grades, put on some weight, and work on his back to basket game. Don't get me wrong, this kid has tons and tons of potential. But also as a 4 or 5, he is no doubt a project right now. As a 3, umm well still maybe a project. Still would love to have him though.

I don't see why anyone would go overseas. Look at Emmanuel Mudiay, he is almost forgotten now. Sure he'll be a high pick because of his HS career, but if you wanna go overseas and get paid, you'll get paid a lot more in one year if you go to college. My point, Thon go to IU.

That isn't that great of an example. Mudiay is still highly talked about for the up coming draft. International scouts rave about him.

Jeremy Tyler is a much, much better example for your point
