Mario Landino

Again shows how poor recruiting services are... kid was a stud Day 1 and just didnt play "that much" last year because he was a true FR and we were loaded.

He's found a home as a 3 technique.

There's still a lot he can do with his body and his explosiveness..

But dear god.. play 1 vs Oregon... Mario set the tone.

Just saying…

The reason Landino didn’t play “that much” as a freshman .was because he was behind Carpenter, a guy who wasn’t good enough to get a scholarship to JMU and earned one at JMU after two years a a walk-on.

Incredible

Mario Landino was the #2398 composite recruit out high school. He was a JMU recruit that never played there; he flipped to IU when Cig and Haines moved.

I just rewatched the Oregon game. Mario Landino is now an extremely disruptive, extremely talented defensive tackle that is going to play on Sundays, but not until after he gives IUFB two and a half more years of All-American level play.

Incredible.

He’s very good. Was it Illinois where he just kicked their a$$ all day?

Evaluations from this staff are just unbelievable. It’s early, but I haven’t seen a blind spot there yet. They get what they want/need at every single position, the under-recruited guys (see: almost all of them) come in with a chip on their shoulder and kick everyone’s @$$.

The best part about it is that these aren’t really underdog stories. We’re not beating teams with guys that “shouldn’t be this good”, our staff just evaluates better than everyone. Mario Landino could play on any DL in the country.

This is the Purdue formula in basketball the past 6-8 years.  We tried to buy teams.  I still want to buy teams, but my hope is Devries has a touch of this going on from a talent evaluation/coaching perspective because that is ultimately so important with a budget.

Given your evaluation of what wins, why in the hell would you “still want to buy teams?”

Because getting the right guys with the right talent is what wins at the top level.  All teams are bought these days. That’s just a fact.  Having a coach in charge focusing on the right things in that market is the difference maker.  Money opens the door to the players you want.  Then choosing the right ones is the next big task. Woody not so great at that part.

For instance? The national champ Florida Gators had a lineup full of five star, hyper-expensive……..

Oh. Wait.

Oh. Wait.

They paid the right players out of the portal. This year they paid Boogie Fland top dollar and others.  I’m not saying I want a team full of 5 stars.  I want a team full of talent.  I don’t care where they get it from.
