No problem.  I thought it would give an interesting aspect of this and something to reference or discuss to pass the time of the next several weeks.  I was considering doing a part 2 because there are a few other names I'd be interested in knowing the results to.  Some of these names are a little more obscure or maybe not as realistic as some of the ones above, but if it got past this original group of 20 candidates, I think I might be a little concerned.  However, if I added these names, some of them would require a 4th option of "Who?"

Other names left off of this because I was limited to 20 options above.

  • Chris Jans (Mississippi State)
  • Will Wade (McNeese State)
  • Mark Byington (Vanderbilt)
  • John Schertz (Saint Louis)
  • Darian DeVries (West Virginia)
  • Billy Donovan (Chicago Bulls)
  • Rick Pitino (St. John's)
  • Richard Pitino (New Mexico)
  • Kevin Boyle (Montverde Acadamy)

I think it would be interesting to build out this list to a full 20 as the "B team" lol, probably get some more intriguing results... lot of big names on this one. Just including names I've seen commonly mentioned on this board (though some also unlikely at the end of the day)... - Buzz Williams, Chris Mack (lol), Bucky McMillan, Luke Murray, Jerrod Calhoun, Ryan Odom (not happening but interesting to me)... anybody else have some?

I’ll be happy to do another 20 as a part 2 but I need a few more names. Buzz Williams is already on the first list. But I can use the other names plus the one mentioned in the next post as well. That gets me to about 15, just need 5 more.

A great idea for a poll.

Shocked by the lack of love for McCasland, Otz, and Shaka. Those are the best of the best young-ish, P5 coaches along with Stevens and May.

Bruce Pearl who is already 64 years old this season is preferred to those guys? We really do have fans who think there should be a coaching search every four years. Yikes.

Well you're partly mistaken. If he were to agree to the standard 6y deal it would have to include his son be the coach in waiting. That's not a road I would want to go down.

2 things: 1) When you look at both the poll list and the supplemental list that Crossbone dropped in, it demonstrates USPS’s argument that there are a bunch of guys with the ability to do well with the available resources here. 2) Yeah he’s not coming, but who in God’s name disapproves of Jay Wright?

I was "NO" on Jay Wright specifically because he's not coming... very happy in the studio... would love him here, but it's just not happening...

But the point of the poll is whether you would approve of the hire. Not if you think he is coming or not. If the stars aligned and they were hired, would you be ok with it or disapprove of it.

Stevens isn't coming either and a lot voted yes on him.

Whether you'd approve and whether they're coming are two completely different things.

What coaches out there get the effort that Sampson teams give? That's what we're looking for. You know you're in street fight playing his teams. Who's teams look that? They have an identity every year that reflects the personality of their coach.

We would chew up and spit out 3/4 of this list by year 3. Who would be a the best choice for generic u? Probably McCollum. But not us. We're different.

Probably the same people parroting that Stevens hasn't coached in X years. Imagine thinking that somebody who is elite in their profession would simply forget how to do it.

I disagree with your guys’ thesis. I actually think very few coaches will succeed here. IU has a ton of upside but the job is also harder. Above average success at another place isn’t a guarantee, or anything close, that one will improve upon that with IUs resources.

To wit, Archie Miller would have fared really well in this poll 8 years ago. Most of the guys on this poll would fail here for similar reasons—they have a fatal flaw or two that won’t hold up under scrutiny in a job like IU.

I was a Neutral on Pearl, Self, Few, and Wright simply because of their age.  I would be happy they are here, but not as ecstatic as some because I know we will be going through this mess in another 5 to 6 years.  Although any of them would be a great bridge coach like Woodson should've been, I want someone who will be around for 10 years or so.

Cronin, I have never been much of a fan of his, and his attitude would wear thin I believe.

Beard, I put Neutral because I think he would do great in Bloomington, but he would really have to go to AA or something to stay off the booze.  He would also have to do some charity work for battered wives or something to show that he is truly regretful of his past mistakes and the like.  He would just have to prove that those incidents are behind him, and can he truly do it?

Drew, the whole Perea incident still gets under my skin.  To threaten to deport the guy was a total d!ck move, and I just don't like him over that.

Gates and Brownell, I don't know much about either of them outside of Brownell is from here in Evansville, and it looks like he was a couple of years ahead of Calbert at Harrison.  If he got the job, I can see him keeping Calbert around.

Shaka, I am not a fan of his style, but can he really win at a big school? His one shot at Texas didn't do too good, but would he do better if he got a second chance?  Who knows, but he looks comfortable at Marquette.

McDermott, he has had a few chances to leave like Few has, but has NIL changed his feelings of staying?  He is 60, and he might be in the same category of Pearl and Self in that he might retire soon.  But he could get 10 years at IU.
