Next B1G Team to Win a Title

Recommended Posts

I know, I know; most will say the answer is “none.”

But I thought it might be interesting in the current environment to rank the most likely B1G teams to be next to win a natty. I will start:

1. Illinois

2. UCLA

3. Indiana (resources, new coach coming soon)

4. Michigan

5. MSU

for me that’s the whole list with even a remote chance at a title in the next five+ years.

I am as anti Purdue as anyone, but there is no way that IU can be ahead of Purdue as things currently stand.  I would probably put the list at:

1. UCLA

2.  Purdue

3.  Michigan

4.  MSU

5.  Indiana

6.  Illinois

Nah Purdue can’t be that high. NIL is a mess. They have likely peaked atm.

The next (first?) school that recruits like an SEC program. Illinois is close. Dusty will get Michigan there. Hopefully we join.

Indiana had the budget this year. We need a culture change ASAP.

Illinois is probably the closest. But I think their window will shrink if they don’t get one in the next 2-3 years.

I think Indiana has so much potential if we can find a staff.

MSU window is shrinking big and might close soon.

Purdue is a bit capped at its ceiling unless they strike gold.

No one really strikes me as the team.

I would 100% put Purdue in the bottom half of the B1G for chances to win a title. Their recruiting and resources suck, and their campus and national vibe aren’t all that great either. The only thing they have going for them is a good coach, but that’s not enough to win a title.

IU’s chances with “2025 coach unknown” are significantly higher.

what is going on at MSU to cause their window to shrink and possibly close?

Izzo doesn’t have a lot of time left and I think he’s lost his fastball. I don’t think MSU will replace him with a top tier coach when it happens. Just my opinion.

I’d probably have oregon on there somewhere. With NIL and Nike I’m thinking Altman can turn around whatever stalled his initial progress out. Seems about as likely as MSU or IU anyways.

USC deserves a mention with Musselman there.

Let's see what he does in the next few years first...decent coach, but a tough place to win in basketball.

It's a long shot, but the way things are going I would absolutely take Musselman at USC before I'd take us and MSU.

USC is a crap basketball program with mediocre facilities and limited NIL, Musselman didn't get past the Elite 8 at a fantastic basketball program, Musselman was notably trending down at Arkansas, and Musselman is now in his 60's.

The chances of USC being a legit title contender in the next five-ten years is miniscule, whereas IU and MSU with a 'lighting strikes' new coach could be instant legit title contenders, along the lines of UK with Pope.
