Class of '66 Old Fart

IUBB vs UNC Greensboro - Thursday, 11.21.24 @ 6:30 on FS1 TV

Recommended Posts

Anybody pontificating about how great this team is/can be, before we see them play in Atlantis, is the one who has an agenda... not the fans who want more than beating UNCG by 11 in a game that had no business being as close as it was.
How many offensive rebounds to one of the smallest teams in D1?
How many turnovers did we have?
How many wide open shots did they miss?
Good thing we hit free throws. Lot of talent. Until we see them in Atlantis, we won't know what they're really made of.
Good thing they've got a week to rest and get ready.
The Bahamas are the only real test of this cupcake preseason schedule.

Thank you Bryson Tucker for flexing your five star status in this one.  Without BT in the second half, this one could have slipped away.

When it was 40-40, he basically took over.

We're gonna go to Bryson Tucker when we need buckets.

Rice drive or Tucker mid-range or Ballo/Malik down low when in doubt. Good to have options.

5-19 from 3 - 26.3%. Yeesh.

It won’t matter much. Last year we were in close games with a bunch of 200ish+ teams and then blown out by anyone good. That hurt.

A couple lackluster wins doesn’t hurt when you mix in some good ones too.

Yep.  UNC Greensboro is at 168 on Pom.   The wins we were getting last year including a couple of nail biters against 300ish teams.  This game in no way compares to a game like we had against Army last year.

Through four games, IU has averaged winning by 20 points against teams that are at 72, 168, 269, and 318.  That's okay.  FWIW, I believe in the four games IU was favored by an average of 21 points.

Ratchet up the fire Woodson thread.

All on the coaching, for sure.

$$$$ incented players have no ownership in the results.

Fire Woodson because we didn’t cover the spread

SMH

LTFOL.

The inside out offense is offensive. StoobyHoo: Woody had no guards, who could expect him to get one in only 3 short years.

Woody can't and won't recruit. StoobyHoo: Who needs recruits he can buy them through the portal with all his buddies money.

The lack of fundamentals is unacceptable: StoobyHoo: What do you expect from these money hungry portal chumps.

Other coaches of great P5 teams don't have the same problem: StoobyHoo:______Fill in excuse___________________

This is a talented roster but a mediocre to not good team. Why is that? The amount of missed block outs gets us beat by 16 against a good opponent. I am so sick of the same problems every damn year, game and half. Clearly I have an axe to grind with Woodson but man....

I mentioned before the game that although UNC Greensboro was undersized, they had been rebounding well.  They were +7 against Florida Gulf Coast and -2 against SMU.  IU didn't rebound well today, but it was +5 IU.

Have to do a better job at blocking out on long rebounds.  UNC G took 32 threes today and there were a lot of long rebounds coming out.  That's not just on the bigs blocking out -- guards have to be aware of the long caroms as well.

My takeaways from some individual performances:

Galloway played the worst game I've seen from him in memory.

Tucker was a man and wanted the ball.

Rice played well but did have too many turnovers.

Carlyle is a hell of an on ball defender but offensively he's simply not there.  I wish they would get him going to the rim more.

Off night for MM but he was due for one of those.

IU continues hitting their free throws which is a departure from the last few years.

Woodson.must.stop.the.first.half.mass.subs.

I have never had an issue with Hummel announcing IU games but thought that tonight he was openly taking delight when IU struggled.  Don't know how many times he said 'IU was lucky there' if UNC G missed an open shot.....but never said anything of that nature if IU missed one.

Agree. Woodson completely killed the flow we’d established.

it is a game he could afford to do that, to give a second unit run to try to develop some game chemistry— that’s my glass half full thinking.

My glass half empty thinking is just like, Damn Woodson, you suck

This team shouldn’t go past playing 8 people. Starters + Galloway, Tucker and Goode. There is no reason to go beyond unless there’s an injury

Sleepy Mike puts the “low” in low energy. Hell, Armond Hill is practically sleeping. Teams take on the personalities of their coaches. See our football team.

The biggest problem is he went to mass subs at one point that had Galloway, Carlyle, Goode, Tucker, and Hatton in the lineup.

The worst thing you can do when a player is struggling offensively like Goode or Carlyle is put them in a situation where they are now expected to be carrying a heavier offensive load.

The more I see the more I can’t help but ponder why I don’t enjoy this “style” of ball. Even for the last couple of years.

This style of play, atmosphere, mojo, whatever you want to call it is too reminiscent of pro-ball. Less about the sum of parts being great and more about individual performances carrying the group.

Frustrating.

I completely agree. The mass subbing is a disaster. Anything short than a second weekend trip is a failure with this talent. Sadly, I don’t see it

We dropped 4 spots in kenpom

Hummel was absolutely HORRIBLE tonight. Even on a Hummel scale.

Joy-suckingly horrible.

This was the first time I really, really didn't like him.  Felt like he had on his Purdue letterman's jacket when he was on the mic.  Seemed to be openly rooting for a UNC G win.
