Class of '66 Old Fart

IUBB vs Eastern Illinois - Sunday, 11.10.24 @ Noon on B1G+

Recommended Posts

11-34 from three after two games against cupcakes.

Season will be determined by defensive rebounding, our ability to defend the perimeter, and our ability to knock down threes.

We look like a tourney team based on pure talent but this doesn’t look like any sort of threat to win the B1G or to sniff the final four.

Good that they came back in the 2nd. You have to expect that after an atrocious 1st. That it happened in the first place, to Eastern Illinois, is what’s troubling. So much left to be desired in terms of rotations and subs, holding players accountable. I find it difficult to feel positively after that performance.

Against good teams you can’t suck for 5 minutes let alone a half.

Context for today's blowout: It's Indiana's first 20-plus point win in 57 games (Elon, Dec. 20, 2022). The Hoosiers didn't have a win by more than 20 last season. It's also Indiana's first 30-plus point win in 63 games (Jackson State, Nov. 25, 2022).

2nd half is what I expect to see the rest of this non-conference slate with these kind of opponents. This team is way too talented to underachieve this year. The top 8 guys (Rice, Carlyle, Mgbako, Reneau, Ballo, Galloway, Goode, Tucker) are as good as any in the country. Results need to start happening. Today was a good start.

Yep. Imo clear and very good top 8.

I'm glad someone said something positive about the second half. It's totally fine with the complaints of the first half but crickets when we outscore someone by 36 points in the second half. I know it was "expected" but still pretty impressive to cover a 28 point spread in one half. This is coming from a guy that wants someone else other than Woodson too.

100% agree. Very happy with that 2nd half. As IU fans we have no choice this season but to get behind this team and coach. Let's see how it all plays out before we reach judgement. This is a very talented team.

Was at the game. The energy in the first half was non-existent.

Our players almost started a fight twice in the second half and aggressively tried to rip the ball on defense; either a foul or a steal into transition on so many occasions—it was truly fantastic.

Other observations up close? Ballo is an outstanding off ball and PNR defender; Mgbako and Goode are not. Tucker has ‘it factor’ above any other IU player, Newton looked really good and kinda confident, and Trey Galloway completely transformed our offense when he was on the floor. Whoever thinks Gallo is an emergency only point guard has not seen the last two games. He was so, so good.

I can only imagine what the halftime locker room was like; f bombs and flying clipboards galore. They came out after halftime ready to kill someone.

Gallo's Assists/40 minutes so far is gonna be nuts. Hopefully as he gets his game shape back, he'll play a starters share of minutes whether he starts or is the '6th man'.

I think that’s it. You can learn very little about a team’s upside in these games but often can get some downside indicators.

Slow starts and deep bench sub patterns are a woody staple and it’s annoying to see those things reemerge with the talent on this team.  I get experimenting around with lineups, but not at the expense of getting our core guys reps. Guys who need reps together by looks of it because some low major scrubs took it to them for the first twenty minutes.

Personally I don’t take much from beating up on the little sisters of the poor. Not in the NIL  era where that entire team likely had less of a payroll than what we’re paying Galloway.

I guess I should have said it's nice to see something expected unlike when it never happened last year. Seems like a positive in the right direction and showed the potential "ecplosiveness" by this team.

Today's game was the best example of what mike woodson needs to fix as a coach. The first half the team was unfocused and lazy. The second half they were energetic and competing like they should. Bring a 40 minute team to the game! Hopefully we can finally fix this for the rest of the season!

If you flip halves, you get the 30 pt lead at halftime and you can rest the starters the last 10 minutes and still get the NET efficiency boost you need for seeding.

Nobody played more than 27 minutes so it's not like anyone got overly taxed.

Fun fact on Trey Galloway: he is #4 nationally in assist rate on Kenpom right now. 9 assists in 17 minutes opening night, 8 assists in 18 minutes tonight.

The three guys ahead are small school guys who have only played one game, so he'll probably be #1 in a few days.
