"standing there and being tall" and doing absolutely NOTHING else defensively and as we know, Malik is not only a poor defender, he's an incredibly unaware one. So you can take the height, it clearly didn't help.... I'll take the athletes, foot speed, scheme, and awareness. 94Bulldog 1 Quote

Ballo (23.8 DR%) and Reneau (18.4 DR%) is demonstrably better than DeVries (14.3 DR%) and Bailey (16.2 DR%). Ballo's block rate was more than double that of Bailey. It's not even a comparison really. Indiana ran into defensive issues and breakdowns when they had a combination of Reneau, Ballo, AND Mgbako on the floor together. Was an awful two-way pairing on both ends. Quote

I pretty clearly explained what I was talking about. Ballo and Malik are pathetic defensively, and yeah, of course adding a joke of a defender in MM wasn't going to help anything. None of this is news. "block rate" zzzzzz Quote

There's so much involved beyond raw numbers (though those matter too). Scheme, quality of teammates, offensive pace, and more. For instance, When guards can't stop the ball, block rates for bigs go way up. Doesn't make them better (or worse) defenders. I haven't seen enough of Bailey to know how he'll defend in Devries' system - I've seen Tucker D and I'm pretty sure that Tucker D is not a plus defender. Also very sure that Mgbako has been a flat out horrible defender, and that's compared to similar position defenders last year like Goode. Malik? Meh - he improved but he was pretty mediocre at IU in a system where bigs put up some good defensive rating numbers. CSP and Dave from Dayton 2 Quote

"block rate" zzzzzz You didn't clearly explain anything because literally none of what you said made sense. DeVries is an average defender at best and there isn't a single metric or piece of film that states Bailey is anything but a bad defender. You can argue the merit of Reneau's basketball IQ all you want, but his advance metrics and stats don't lie. He was an average defender...defending out of position...who was a plus rebounder. Quote

No, I did. I'm not sure why you're lost. I'm willing to bet you've watched exactly zero film. Saying Bailey is a bad defender while stating Malik was an average one is absolutely astonishing. Nah. Ballo and Malik are trash defensively... use your eyeballs. Quote

I'm not claiming either were elite defenders. But they could hold their own and rebound their position more than adequately, something DeVries and Bailey have never been able to do, even in lower level conferences. Now asking them to do it in the B10 as a pair? It's quite a stretch. There's zero practical reason why Bailey can't and shouldn't play the 4. It exploits the other team defensively even more. Quote

It doesn't. Not when you couple him with a non shooting 5. Quote
CSP Posted May 16 Posted May 16 I very much want Hawthorne. He and Sisley at the 3/4 in a couple of years looks excellent. Were there any tidbits about him today? Quote

It worked perfectly for Michigan last year and I think Bailey's offensive game has some Danny Wolfe to it. DeVries and Wilkerson on the wing frees up plenty of spacing, especially with Bailey's ability to dive and cut. Hardwood83 1 Quote
monskisprodigy Posted May 16 Posted May 16 Was Hawthorne on campus? Have taken several weeks off from the board...trying to get caught up. Quote

Any further movement/news on Platteeuw? I only saw Ian Platteeuw mentioned one time by The Daily Hoosier and then nothing else. Watched some film and he looks like a major project. Who knows what is going on behind the scenes with this staff. They seem to be very busy with 2026 offers now. The Hawthorne news seems to be rumors right now just hope they have legs.. He would be an excellent addition and as Sunshine Pumper said would pair nicely with Sisley in the future. Quote

If you can point out a 16.6 point, 7 rebound 7'1" power 5 level center that is still available, I'm all ears. Brill 1 Quote

Everything you said here is flat out true. In the system he’s been in with the teammates he’s had and the role he’d been given, Bailey has absolutely been a below average defender. Seems like the challenge is for Devries and staff to put him in a system and with teammates that can turn him into a much better defender. (Captain Obvious conclusion) That’s why everything hinges on having a coaching staff that doesn’t suck; for roster fit and player evaluation , for player development, for scheme, and for building a culture of accountability, consistency, and toughness. Don’t need that out of the 5 position next year. There’s plenty of fire power 1-4 offensively, especially if you’re 4 is Bailey. As exciting as DeVries/Bailey at the 4/5 offensively is equally horrifying defensively. Hardwood83 1 Quote
