what? And yes, I never thought "3pt shooting" was our biggest issue.

The basketball savant will be by shortly to explain to you there is no difference between shooting and scoring.

Sounds like Connor is down to IU and Michigan. Maryland and South Carolina both got guards so he's out with them. He grew up a Michigan fan and likes their system better, but our money seems to be a little higher. I don't think he will commit today but I would love to be surprised.

how many minutes would you project for Conner?  Would he likely given the green light to stroke it from 3 as his main role

Yeah doesn’t surprise me that he’s down to IU and Michigan. I knew he and his family grew up big Michigan fans. I’m sure they’d think it’d be really cool for him to play there. Obviously playing at a place like IU is no slouch either obviously, so in this case hopefully money does talk. I’m bias on him though since we went to the same high school. My sister in law was his teacher in a couple classes too, so we all think it’d be cool for him to be at IU.

Michigans new assistant from St Mary’s has ties to the kid that just entered the portal and that kid is a stud.   He would be perfect for any team.  If he goes to Michigan not sure i see Essegian going there

I would guess 10-15 minutes and more on any given night. And why bring him in if your not giving him the green light

Let's say that they both shoot 35% from three next year -- pretty realistic expectation for the jump from freshman to sophomore year (for an IU comparison, C.J. Gunn and Tamar Bates certainly had holes in their game and neither shot the ball well as all as freshman, but they were at 34 and 37% as sophomores).  Rice and Carlyle as 35% shooters from deep are a couple of pretty effective three level scorers.

That's my assessment as well. I think both Carlyle and Rice will be ~35% on 5-6 attempts a game which translates to 1.5-2 makes a game and then Mgbako I think will be ~37% on 7-8 attempts which again translates to 2.75-3 makes a game. On the low end that comes out to just under 200 made 3's. That alone eclipses last years total of 166 made 3's just from 3 players. Those guys are going to get a ton of looks next year with Reneau and Ballo who are almost automatic under the rim. If Rice and Carlyle can hit open 3's next year (something our back court couldn't do at all last season) this will be a very tough offense to stop. Opposing defenders aren't going to sag off of guys like Rice or Carlyle, they'll get run out of the gym if they do.

I wonder if Michigan is in a spot to offer him more minutes or even a starting role. Not too sure what their situation is with what they’d be able to give him. If both Michigan and IU are saying he’ll be a role player off the bench then hopefully our higher money will be the tipping point. I also think, like Chris said, he’s probably going to like Michigan’s system better and think he may get more shots there, so that worries me a bit. Not much tape on IU the last few years that shows snipers getting a bunch of shots…I guess we’ll find out.

I hope we add Essegian. There's enough talent there for him to help us in a reserve role playing 12-15 minutes per game.

He's better than Leal IMO.

Agree…and obviously there are some factors that go into this that people can nitpick, but just to put into perspective:

Indiana high school career points:

Leal - 1,620

Essegian - 2,526

I agree Essegian is better but Leal did play in a way better schedule all throughout HS than Essegian haha

All spots off the bench aren’t equal. We really don’t have any thing to offer him playing time wise. As I understand it he wants to be at Indiana, but that would probably be a deal breaker for me if Michigan is offering me first off the bench status and 15-25mpg.

Leal played with Hickman, Two Bombas, another STUD (15ppg avg), and a VERY good guard. That isn't even going into his FR and SO years. (not quite as familiar with their roster make up in those years)..

4A vs. 2A, though Bloom South plays a not all that great of schedule, is still prevalent, as well.

Oh for sure, CN was only 2A, I get that and agree, but heck you still gotta put the ball through the hoop…I’m just trying to talk him up haha

I'm here and BTownqb has it exactly right. Shot-making, especially from of our guards, was non-existent last year, and yes that includes the ability to shoot from the perimeter. But how many guys were effective shooting off the bounce in PnR? How many could get to the rim when they wanted? On top of converting? How many times did they get to the line because of their dynamics? That was by far and away our biggest issue last season, not "We PLaYeD THrOuGH THe  POsT".

Right, I agree. Connor was for sure option 1 at Central Noble and didn’t have as much competition. I’m just bias and trying to talk him up since I went to CN too (even though I graduated the year after he was born haha)

I do the same for Jack Benter. It's been a hard pill for me to swallow that he is Purdue-bound.
