I’m fine with whatever coach wants I just don’t see how leal moves the needle at all. If he is logging minutes we will not be very good. I’m having a hard time understanding what he actually brings to the team. I get it he’s a hometown kid who wants to play for Indiana but a lot of kids want to play for Indiana. If Leal were to enter the portal I have a hard time seeing big time programs wanting him. I just think there are a lot more needs on this team. Bring back Luke grab a big and let’s roll into the season.

Here’s what he brings:

Leadership

Maturity

Connections to the state, the town, the boosters, the athletic department, the student population, and the league.

Finally? He brings good defense with low turnovers if he plays some.

If he comes back, which I really hope is he doesn’t, here’s to hoping DD doesn’t allow the Mike Woodson victim mentality to spread to the rest of the team.

Explain what that mentality means.

You have been vocal in criticizing the Senior speeches of several players, including Leal.

Would you rather have players who are not loyal to their coach?
Yeah, I get it. That a couple of guys called out the fanbase. Who exactly is a player supposed to support? In a public setting, what would you do? Criticize your boss/employer? Or question/call out the people who are dumping on him and your company?

What is publicly said, and what goes on behind closed doors is often not nearly the same

No one forced him to say anything about it at all during his first (of apparently 3) senior night speeches. He didn’t have to choose between dumping on the fanbase and dumping on his coach. He chose to dump on the fanbase to support his coach, which he was free to do.  Same as I’m free to not like him for it and hope he’s not back next year. Mike Woodson intentionally drove a wedge between the players and the fanbase. Leal was one of the most vocal. I don’t want anyone from Woodson’s program around next year.

IMO the last point is the only one that actually matters. If DDV hasn’t added an entire roster of mature young men … and with all these seniors, including his son, doesn’t feel there’s leadership already… then that’s a problem. I don’t think that’s actually the case. Leal is a positive defender and doesn’t need the ball to be effective. That’s nice, but any playing time he gets would be at the expense of guys who have more eligibility or were presumably brought in to play over him. No problem with him playing instead of younger guys… except for the fact that means A) DDV missed on his scouting evals to the point Leal is playing significant / meaningful minutes B) it means no bigs if we get Goode too. Can’t afford an injury to Bailey / Harris / Alexis in that scenario. Leal is a nice kid but it’s definitely fair to question a scenario where DDV wants him at IU for a 6th year when he already has 11/13 spots filled and we have a ton of guys at Leal’s position (objectively) and probably could use one more big guy (subjective take)

That’s fine. You do you.

Still didn’t explain what the victim mentality consists of.

And please provide proof that Woodson intentionally drove a wedge between the players and the fans.

Maybe he didn't do it intentionally. We know that he was living in a delusional world where he thought the fans should embrace his mediocrity. But he and his players were blaming the fans for his inability to consistently win.

I would agree.  At this point we don’t need any players.  Certainly not players tied to a toxic regime

The victim mentality consists of things like losing at home by 25 points and then using your postgame press conference to dump on the fanbase a la Luke Goode.

And lol, did you live through the past two years? Woodson driving a wedge was obvious in multiple facets. The Twitter burner accounts, giving players NIL bumps to hate on the fans during senior night speeches, Woodson’s actions. It was very transparent.

Anthony Leal neither plays a position of need nor is good enough to warrant bringing that mentality back into a brand new locker room. Leave the Woodson era and the Woodson guys in the rearview.

He can help them buy a house with their NIL money.

Seems like such an odd situation.  It is rather late in this process for him to suddenly be trying for this extra year?

I would love to know what DRock actually thinks about this and if Leal is someone he truly wants or not?  If he truly wants Leal then thats fine and I will trust his judgement.  Leal is pretty harmless and does have a few positives that he can bring to the roster.

I guess I watched the wrong games. I just don’t see leal as a plus defender at all. He has good principles but lacked the ability to keep people in front of him. Leadership? Maybe I guess but the senior night shenanigans scream a whole different story. I was happy for him he got to see the floor last year mainly because I was tired of watching the other people on the team but I really hope this year team is an upgrade in talent and just basketball skills and IQ in general. Again if leal hits the portal I don’t think he generates much interest from high level power conferences. Just my opinion and it’s not worth a lot lol

I am in agreement that Woodson needed to go. His philosophy and the performance that resulted from it were not what IU basketball is about .

Your argument however is conjecture. There is no evidence to support your assertions that he was the driver behind the burner accounts, nor is there any proof that any player got paid extra for saying anything, senior night speeches or otherwise.

If proof comes out to back up your claims, then I will agree that you are right. But until then, like I said, it’s all speculation

Put me in the camp of no to Leal. Move on. 3 Senior nights? Gimme a break. This is an older team DeVries has coming in…I assure you we don’t need any “leadership” from Anthony Leal…of which he would provide little to none. Would be a mistake inviting him back.

Imagine going through Senior Night twice and still trying to get a waiver to keep playing.

Won't be a popular opinion, but I hope it gets denied. Not interested in players who blame fans and can't handle criticism.

It’s not an unpopular opinion. Many feel the same way you do.
