LamarCheeks Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 Slick Rick gives it a thumbs up (hardly surprising, though ...) I know he has a legacy at UK -- but seems sorta weird that as the St. John's coach, he's releasing a statement about their coaching hire. https://x.com/RealPitino/status/1778808591060812005 Quote

Send him to a place like UK or IU and he’s not going to drink less. There’s a very real chance he spirals out of control. And if you don’t care about booze and domestic abuse just know that it probably would eventually take its toll on winning too. Everything was great at Texas until it wasn’t. Not to keep on Beard, look at Sampson. Habitual line-crosser. Got caught and a second chance. But that second chance was at a high pressure job at Indiana where he immediately reverted to his old ways trying to win. What’s the old saying: adversity doesn’t build character, it reveals character. These top jobs will test your character in a million different ways. Calipari was largely very successful and even he got tired of it. As someone said above, Beard is going to have to demonstrate he can establish a pattern of not screwing up for a few years before any AD ties their future to him and gets a donor to cough up money for a big contract. For me personally, I’d actually have to see that he addressed his underlying issue in someone—not that he merely went without incident for a few years—before I would attach my name to his. Second chances are fine, but not if you’re just going to make the same mistakes again. We should know that better than anybody given the Sampson ordeal. Excellent post, and it states exactly the response I have when people say that what Sampson or Wade did is legal now, so let's look past it. If guys are gonna cheat under whatever rules were in place at the time, what makes anyone think they are going to do a moral or ethical 180 and all of a sudden become choir boys? Character is built over time, and that timeframe shouldn't be sped up to meet a program's desire to win. Wade needs to show more proof that he can run a clean program before IU should ever consider him, imo. IMO, Sampson has run a clean program at Houston, but he's also a two-time offender. Burn me once, shame on you. Burn me twice, shame on me. As far as Beard goes, not sure what to think. the woman dropped charges..so there's that. If he does have a drinking or substance abuse problem, a smart AD would include in a contract the requirement that he attend regular counseling. And that forgoing counseling or having a relapse would be grounds for immediate discharge, without any buyout. I would also assume that a university in today's world could afford to hire someone to be an on-staff monitor, so to speak. Just my opinions. Depending on who is actually available when Woodson retires or is let go, I would consider Beard, with the above types of stipulations in his contract. Sampson would never be allowed to return. Wade would not make my list. IH8PU and str8baller 2 Quote
IH8PU Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 I just watched the intro video of Matthew Graves at ISU. I will not go into detail, just a few bullets. just like I thought, he wants to be there a long time and finish his coaching career there The big question I had "yes we will recruit players to play the system we had this year" So far no home games next year out of conference, the high mid majors don't want to play us at home As of today only two players and one walk on, is the roster Easier to recruit when the word "Interim" is taken away Coach told him when he was hired 3 years ago "I want to leave this program in such a way that you can be the successor" (similar to that quote) His 12 total years at Butler taught him it was "people" that made the success of a basketball program He ended with a tease without mentioning names but one of his assistants is from that area, popular name, known by many His time at Southern Alabama should rightly so be reviewed but it taught him "how to fail forward". Very impressive intro interview on YouTube ... you will need to move the slider up to 24:29 mark to start the press conference. Demo and BannerVille 2 Quote

woodenshoemanHoosierfan Posted April 12, 2024 Posted April 12, 2024 This Kentucky search shoukd be a cautionary tale to some posters on here who believe getting a "home run " higher can happen when IU moves on from CMW. That isn't to say we fans shouldn't hope for a homerun and IU shouldn't try for one, but that it is possible IU settles.Personally, I hope we get a home run hire and stick it to Kentucky Sent from my SM-S908U using Tapatalk Feathery and bird4par 2 Quote

LamarCheeks Posted April 13, 2024 Posted April 13, 2024 Small-scale move, but noteworthy nonetheless. Eastern Washington hires Dan Monson. After he and Long Beach State parted ways following the regular season, he led the 49ers to the Big West tourney title and an NCAA bid. He was there for 17 seasons. Monson also coached at Gonzaga and Minnesota (after the Clem Haskins fiasco). lillurk, IH8PU and Demo 3 Quote

Wonder how often Monson looks into his nightly scotch and thinks, “What in God’s name made me think going to Minnesota was a good idea?” That dude had Gonzaga rolling. Could have been Mark Few. You’re fighting an uphill battle if you need to use context to argue that you hired a “top guy.” You don’t need context if you hire Hurley, Oats, Drew, Pearl, etc. Pope’s made the tournament twice as a head coach and lost to a lower seed both times. Maybe he ends up excelling there. No one knows the future. But I feel pretty good about UK’s hire as someone who doesn’t want UK to succeed. I tend to think UK could’ve done better (Underwood? Seems they could’ve waited for Donovan?) but if Pope doesn’t succeed or last there my hunch is the reason is more that he gives them 2012-2016 Crean-style results and they’re unsatisfied, and not that he flames out. The other thing I’ll say about Proven Winner (TM) stuff that comes up all the time…25 months ago Hurley hadn’t gotten anyone past R32. Oats hadn’t gotten anyone farther when he took the Bama job, and until this year had underperformed Bama’s seed every year. Drew’s got a title at Baylor, hard to poke a hole there…but before he broke through there were some serious flameouts. Pearl has an impressive resume with some serious tournament issues sprinkled in. Tournament success isn’t everything, since it’s single-elim. But that’s the problem with “Proven Winner (TM)” being the heuristic over every other thing you can do to evaluate a coach. You’d never hire these guys in the first place BEFORE their prime, and while it’s nice to, for example, get Pitino on the Louisville timeline, or Cal when Memphis or UK did, that same logic would’ve (did!) pick Archie over Hurley, for example. I'm not even kidding, I'd like to get Few drunk and ask him what percentage of the reason you never let Gonzaga is due to Monson falling on his face. Home Jersey and lillurk 2 Quote
