They “Retired” Coach Woodson Thread

I still think a fire retire scenario is most likely before we play our last conference game

I thought so too, but now I'm not so sure. If Woodson is intent to hold on to the bitter end, he wouldn't want to retire while there was still a chance that he could go on a run in March. Regardless of how badly the next six weeks go, I'm sure he'll think he can win the B1G tournament and then make a final four run.

Meanwhile, if I'm Woodson, I'd be skeptical that the department wouldn't let me "retire" once the season is over in order to avoid having to fire a program legend. And he's probably right.

So I'm not sure what motivation he'd have to preemptively announce his retirement before he absolutely has to.

Sampson was given the option to resign in exchange that he wouldn't later sue the university and Davis was given the option to resign cordially or be fired at the end of the season...the same option that likely exists for Woodson.

Knight and Sampson were fired/forced to resign due extenuating circumstances while Davis, Crean, and Archie were allowed to coach until the end of the season. Not sure why you'd think it'd be any different for Woodson unless extenuating circumstances permit otherwise.... which obviously don't exist. Losing a bunch of games isn't a for-cause termination like violating a zero tolerance policy or committing several level 1 NCAA violations.

Pretty straightforward.

Well the next coach's contract better say: "losing to Purdue by 20+ is cause for termination."  :)

Archie had a losing record his last year....

Yep.  Played the 4th toughest overall schedule.  2-12 in Q1 games,  6-2 in Q2 games.  Didn’t have the luxury of playing home games with a crowd.  17 games against the top 50.   Definitely needed to go but thats a tough way to out

Huh? I am confused why we'd want to lose him, yeah, especially compared to Cupps... my lord.

All I've said is he should be in the group to have a convo with.

I don't think I brought Cupps up in this conversation, but Tucker why would you want to keep him.  According to this board he sounds entitled him and his dad feels like he should play 40 minutes he calling other schools all along grabbing a big check.  Please let the door hit you in the a$$ on the way out.  Tucker Sucks look at his stat line.

Here's a question. I know if a coach leaves (for whatever reason) in the spring or summer after the transfer portal window is closed the players on that team get 30 days to enter the portal. Is that true if the coach leaves is fired or resigns during the season? If a coach is fired during the season, is there the possibility (however unlikely) that school might be unable to field a team because too many players hit the portal immediately?

Frankly, If I am the next coach, each player gets a pass on the year because the current staff sucks.  I'll measure them on their skill set, potential, attitude towards the new program, etc.  Gonna need a bunch of players, so any that can fit my program who are already here is a bonus.

Lol…instead of untangling that convoluted mess, let’s just point out that you’re at odds with your fellow poster Cathy.

But we can all agree on one thing: i was right about 3/5 basketball coaches since Knight being terminated/resigned/fired before the end of the season. This is exceedingly straightforward which is why I find it hard to believe anyone not trolling can’t grasp it.

There’s no IU process or precedent of IU having a deliberate end of season pow wow to fire coaches. Woody will be fired whenever the reactionary chuckleheads in the IU admin feel like it, which is historically long after everyone else knows it’s time to go. We’re in that territory now. Could be tomorrow. Could be April or anywhere in between.

You made the ridiculous assertion, not me or anybody else. Only one coach has been relieved mid-season (Sampson) and it had nothing to do with performance. The last 3 underperforming coaches all got to finish the season and Knight’s firing before the season also had nothing to do with performance. Not sure why you would think it’d be any different for Woodson who isn’t facing a for-cause termination.

Acting like there’s a prior precedent for firing an underperforming coach in the middle of the season is an outlandish take. It’s literally never happened at IU before lol.

Well, it was supposed to be the 'picket fence', but none of the team had ever seen Hoosiers or knew what that was.

Still not sure why you would run the picket fence with no space... really what did they think they could get from 20 ft out with 3 defenders right there...guy guarding inbound takes baseline away.

Cupps was brought up first.

His stats lol.. look at Kaleb Banks stats the last two years.

I've listed why.

Yes.   Miami players had  a 30 day window I believe

If our administration had any brains they would force it.   We can either announce your end of season retirement right now and you can finish the season or we make another announcement right now and you’ve already coached your last game.

This isn’t difficult people.  Unless you’re a Cathy.
