What about Jon Gruden? He's got some IU ties

I actually thought about him.  Obviously some baggage there, but I think we need to make a splash like that if we’re ever going to make the football program consistently relevant.

Is Gruden going to tackle, punt, catch the football, throw or run for a touchdown??  Everyone as usual will be happy after a couple of wins (refer to Colorado) or T.A. as assistant and first couple years as head coach.

So someone like Aa Gruden or whoever could make a fairly quick 20 million and AD and other decision makers can buy a good 5 more years in their current positions.

We could do a lot worse than Fuente IMO. He still has a lot to prove, and would coach like he's got a chip on his shoulder after how the end of his tenure at Virginia Tech went down.

The athletic department would have to give him as much latitude as he needs in order to find success though.

Admittedly he wouldn't be my first choice, and hiring him wouldn't win the press conference, but I would get on board with it.

Heck of a coach, but I could see IU saying too much baggage and/or too expensive.  That's of he wouldn't just hang up the phone and bust laughing.

I don't think this is too far fetched. His "colorful" past is definitely going to hinder him from getting another high profile gig. I can't imagine he would ever get another NFL job. I don't have a clue how much you'd have to pay him, I would guess 8M+. He would be a huge buzz hire and definitely provide a boost in exposure for a couple of years. Does he want to recruit? He hasn't coached in college since 1991. He could get a great staff. He would definitely be on my initial list to gauge interest.

I would take Gruden in a heart beat.  I wonder if Gruden is chomping at the bit to get back into coaching?

Jon Gruden Takes In Familiar Bloomington With His Family

Stu Jackson • TheHoosier

As Jon Gruden arrived in Bloomington and drove around campus, he noticed many familiar sights from his childhood.

Cascades Golf Course, off North Kinser Pike, was still there, as was the student union at the center of campus.

For the first time in 40 years, Gruden was back in Bloomington. The former NFL head coach and current ESPN Monday Night Football analyst visited Thursday to serve alongside his father, Jim, as an honorary coach for the IU football spring game.

“Very excited to be back,” Gruden said. “It’s amazing to see the facilities, the upgrades. It’s really an exciting time at IU.”

Gruden’s family joined him for the trip, which also included breaking down film with the IU football coaching staff, a 15-minute question-and-answer session with local media and a speech given to Hoosier football players.

It was a homecoming of sorts for Gruden, whose father served as an assistant coach on Lee Corso’s staff from 1973-1977.

That time overlapped with Gruden’s childhood and early grade school years, including two years at Binford Elementary off East 2nd Street. Gruden grew up playing youth football with his dad as his coach and also won a state championship in Little League baseball. Outside of football and baseball, he also served as a ball boy for the IU men’s basketball program when Bob Knight was at the helm.

Similar to his youth football days, when Gruden arrived in Bloomington he also met a father-son coach-player relationship in IU head coach Tom Allen and his son, Thomas, a freshman linebacker for the Hoosiers who enrolled early.

Gruden said he and the elder Allen didn’t necessarily discuss family and football, but did recognized how meaningful those relationships are.

“I got to coach with my brother Jay, I got to play little league organized sports for my dad,” Gruden said. “To have an opportunity to play for your dad at Indiana University has got to be one of your greatest accomplishments in life if you’re Tom Allen.”

Six years before joining Corso’s staff, Gruden’s father earned his master’s degree at Indiana. In the fifty years since, Gruden still remembers Bloomington vividly.

“A lot of the old places are still here,” Gruden said. “The IU golf course, Cascades, Binford, the student union. A lot of things haven’t changed at all. Bryan Park, you see some things you remember vividly but then you see some structures and some facilities that are awesome. The limestone buildings are still really cool.”

After his media session ended, Gruden walked out of the Memorial Stadium team room where he was greeted by his family.

Gruden said sharing Thursday’s opportunity was his dad was a “great moment.” And perhaps one more family member will be taking in Bloomington soon.

“My youngest son, Jayson, is visiting IU,” Gruden said. “I don’t think he’s going to be a player, but the thought of him perhaps coming to Indiana, where his Uncle Jay, his Uncle Jeff and his dad grew up is really cool. My wife’s here. We’re all here to get reunited with Hoosier Nation.”

Addendum: While the Gruden connection to Bloomington is pretty cool, the stuff he got fired for is extensive and very not cool.

I never saw what he said only that it was racist/homophobic/misogynist etc.  Today these terms can be applied even if the comments are marginal, but since he walked away from the job and has not been back in the booth yet either I assume he definitively said some things that a school like IU would distance themselves from.

I just looked it up and is pretty extensive. Racist, homophobic, political; you name it.

I’ll throw a vote in for Jamey Chadwell. Here’s a few reasons:

-He’s a freakin’ GUY

-His teams are freakin’ FUN

-He’s freakin’ FUNNY

-His offense is freakin’ GIMMICKY AS HELL

Liberty can legitimately offer him as much money as he could ever want, but what they can’t offer him is a chance to be nationally relevant. There isn’t a power conference, or maybe even a 2nd tier conference, that’s touching Liberty with a 10 foot pole any time soon.

No clue what his buyout looks like. It most likely isn’t realistic. But if we’re going to get weird let’s get really freakin’ weird.

He'd probably have a heart attack or stroke upon setting foot on IU's campus after being on the, ummmmmm, super-ultra-mega-conservative Liberty campus lol
