IU would not hire Fitzgerald.I’m just hoping for a legitimate coaching search and that Dolson doesn’t just hand it to Carey.

"Handing" the job over to someone already on the staff has not worked in the past at all.

I like Fitzgerald, but going 1-8 in the Big Ten West 3 of the last 4 years scares me. Did he lose his fire or what?

Yeah, even without the hazing stuff, seemed like he had lost all of his steam there. I get that's a tough place to win much like IU, but that downward trajectory scares me a bit, like either he didn't change with the times or others figured out how to scheme against him. BIG Ten West is way easier to have some very good years with teams that are less than great.

Or Fuente. I don't think this would happen, but I'd be lying if I said it's not a haunting thought in the back of my mind. And I say that as someone that was a fan of Fuente.

Why not Fuente out of curiosity? From what I gathered he was basically handcuffed by the administration and ghosts of Beamer.

I'd be happy with Curt Cignetti or Craig Bohl. I couldn't find the buyout numbers but both of their salaries are numbers that can be persuasive enough to entice them to sit at the table, in my opinion. And I would think both of them would like the chance to coach Big Ten football.

Assuming we are not going to offer enough money for a absolute HR hire as football coach, there seem to be 3 routes.  1) A prior HC who may have struggled elsewhere (bigger program or perhaps some other baggage) 2) A top D1/NFL assistant who may not have had HC responsibilities or 3) A top D2 coach who has been amongst the best at D2

Option 3 may be the least exciting but there have been a few examples where it worked (Tressel).  For fun i looked around the D2 ranks and found this example Brent Vigen - Football Coach - Montana State University Athletics (msubobcats.com).  There may be some with midwest experience that could be a better fit.  Finding someone at this level who has had excellent results may yield a guy who is great at teaching/coaching and if they have had some experience at a D1 school recruiting then it is an interesting option.

What about Jerry Kill? He's now the head coach at New Mexico State, or Gary Patterson?

Guessing you mean FCS (former Division I-AA) instead of DII.

I would hope we would not look to DII for a coach -- but with our penchant for going cheap, you never know ...

Cignetti will get a better job than IU. Bohl is interesting although he hasn't been setting the world on fire at Wyoming.

Yeah but Lebowski had some good ideas at the D1 level that could work too for that 3rd option.

Jake Dickert would, imo, be an absolutely grand SLAM hire. Could be had given the uncertainty of WSU and their conference affiliation. Currently only makes around $2.5m

No, I agree there, I’m a Fuente fan. I’m just saying that passing on a national search two hires in a row seems very dumb.

Craig Bohl is the man, but the knock there could be that he’s coming up on 70 in a hurry.

*hyper aware that things seem to be going ok in the same situation for our basketball coach

Several of these guys being bandied about are a bit long in the tooth ...

Bohl (65)
Rich Rod (60) -- though I'd give him a thumbs down. He was good at WVU, but stunk at Michigan and was mediocre at Arizona.
Kill (62) -- and if memory serves, he had some health issues
Cignetti (62)
Patterson (63)

Though, as has been mentioned, Woody is 65 and seems to be progressing pretty well.
Guess one school of thought would be to give an older, established coach a look -- one who either wants one last crack at a P5 school or a first crack at a P5 school -- and hope he can get get the program headed in the right direction during his time as coach. I think Hepp was in his late 50s when we hired him.

I think the time might be now to bring in a guy with real coaching chops and who can build a great staff to shore up the program for 7-8 years. But I don't care either way, but this is a really, really, really important hire with the Big Ten expansion happening. Recruiting and NIL is going to be wild so I just want a guy people and players trust from the get go.
