I’m a fan of Dane both as a player and coach. That being said, there seems to be a pretty strong undercurrent that Dane will be the coach after Woody. I realize, of course, that he played for IU, briefly was a head coach and then a longtime assistant at MSU.  Are we that confident that he will be a good head coach? Do we think recruits/players will respond to him the way they do to Woodys NBA career and presence? Will he be our best choice/option?
I’m just not sure he is a shoo-in to be the next coach but in any case hope we do not have to worry about it for 7-8 years.

If we’re talking about an internal hire, what about Ya if he stays around that long? (Unlikely, I know) He’s young, players obviously love him, it seems most of our recruiting wins recently are running through him, and I think someone even said he had the Purdue scout. If he has the coaching acumen by the time that comes around, he could have as good a case as anyone currently on staff.

Has anyone ever heard Woody give props to a specific assistant coach for game strategy? I am not bashing him for not doing that but I used to like hearing Ellenberger on the post game broadcast back in the day and he would often mention who had the game scout responsibility for that game. Just had me wondering what Woody was getting from each.

IMO, if Dolson is still the AD, he wants someone with IU roots, that includes playing for them.  They got away from that and look where it got them.

Not sure. I don’t really listen to postgame pressers usually. I think someone on here had posted that Ya had the PU scout, but not sure where that came from.

I think Chris mentioned it? If they take every third game then Ya had Maryland, too

Your friends at the Hysterics had Ya on their podcast after the Purdue game and he said he was the one with the Purdue scout

Not a knock at all, but not sure it’s really that attributable. He may have had the scout role but there was just soooo much strange stuff that occurred that i find it hard to say “the scout job” was the difference maker.

our All-American that never gets into serious foul trouble got into foul trouble immediately and forced us to change everything. Was the plan really to play Durr huge minutes? No. Was it really our gameplan to have Phinisee play the best game of his life and shoot lights out? No.

im not going to say he doesn’t deserve any credit but if we are being honest, a lot of our success was not planned for

Yeah I personally think which assistant coach has a scout for a particular game isn’t that big a deal and something that some fans overrate.

The point is he’s doing more than just recruiting at a high level.

Agreed. If there’s a significant gap between assistants scouting then one coach ain’t doing his job

Coach Ya has openly talked about using this opportunity at IU to add to his resume and eventually move up the chain.    Also if Oregon ever offers him a coaching position probably not much IU can do to keep him

Fair, I would hope that every assistant wants be promoted to a more senior role. If our assistants are getting offers from other big name schools then that means we are performing at a high level and just need to reload like Alabama football does - other schools poach their assistants like no other

Oregon is his alma mater.

Remember the roster has to be down to 15 next year. We’re at 15 now with three signed recruits. I think the staff would welcome everyone back, but we have to lose 3 people.

Pretty sure you can only have 13 scholarship players.

Yes, he later corrected himself (had “fat finger” LOL). Going to be interesting as we need 3 guys to go but for now…..Love how the season is going and how Woody has the guys “buying-in”.  Going dancing this year will be a good first step.

The good news is the whole staff is rock solid, and if IU has a run of success and then turns to Kenya Hunter or Dane Fife when CMW retires, we’ll be in good hands.

I don’t want to look too far ahead right now, though, because the present is enjoyable!

Exactly. If Hunter or Fife want the head job, they need to win as assistants and make it hard for Dolson to look outside when the time comes. Woody being successful will lead to them getting the IU head job or a head job somewhere else.
