Chris Beard's buyout to go to another Big 12 school drops to $4 million on April 1, sources told ESPN.  $2 million for any school outside the Big 12.  Just, you know, in case anyone is randomly wondering this morning.

TEXAS!

I see what you did there -- a double meaning. You're saying it was smart (intelligent) for IU to not have talked to Beard because of Smart (possibly leaving Texas).

Very well done.

I prefer Beard to Musselman because I think what he does is more sustainable. But here’s the thing with Musselman, if you want him you better craft the mother of all exit buyouts. That dude is a complete mercenary. He’s this generation’s Larry Brown. He is going to leave at some point.

Lol lets not get ahead of ourselves. Our last 2 contracts with Crean and Archie put us in a bad position. Imagine if Musselman isn't the guy by year 4 and we owe him $20m. lol. We need to be able to get out of a contract if he underperforms but also have a large enough buyout that if he's successful he doesn't leave us. Again I'm calling for a performance based buyout, no tournament the buyout drops, consecutive missed tournaments buyout drops again. Making the tournament or going to E8 or FF increases buyout.

True, but the buyout doesn't have to be the same for firing vs him leaving. In fact they seldom are.

That makes sense on paper but in today’s “coaches market” would any hot coach accept those terms if other schools aren’t imposing those terms?

Gotta believe he's headed to Texas. He's a Texas guy.

It's another $2M but he may be. Haven't read through the thread but if not covered Shaka is apparently in discussions with Marquette. He just had a seriously successful year at UT, he lost in the first round but that happens as it did to other programs, seemed premature to assume that despite the exceptional year UT had and the recruiting that lead to it he'd be out because of the tourney flop, but seems maybe not premature as the talks with Marquette appear to be real. UT has tons of cash, another $2M means nothing to UT, but we'll see.

Smart never won a tournament game at Texas in 6 years and had a under .500 record in Big 12 games.   Smart is from Wisconsin so the Marquette move is a good one for him.

Yeah the irony is the firing of Barnes who was in the tourney well, every year, recruited very well (hello, KD) and has continued successfully after leaving UT. But again Shaka just had a tremendous year here in Texas, he didn't win a tourney game this year but that just happens, and his recruiting leading into this season set up the team he built. From what I hear the talks with Marquette were his decision.

I'm gonna bet Marquette fans didn't have to start a 'Come home Shaka' campaign either lol

Beard was hired at Texas Tech one year after Smart at Texas. Obviously, nobody knew at the time that Smart wouldn't pan out, but I'm still surprised given that Beard is a UT alum that Texas Tech didn't put a clause in his contract with a massive buyout ($10M or so) if Beard left for Austin -- sorta like we did with Moren.

Of course, I supposed it's possible TT tried, but he wouldn't agree to it.
