NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

Recommended Posts

Mike Sharavjamts, San Franciso back in the portal.  IU pursued him last year when he was transferring from Dayton.  6'8" G/F.  Stats made a little bit of a jump but still nothing standing out.  In 25 minutes per game he averaged 7.7 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.7 assists.  Shot 42/36/82.

There has never been a player as consistent in four years of college basketball than Gillis....that is, the player he was as a freshman was the exact same player he was as a senior.  Some people would call that not developing.

MPG:  22.2,  23.5,   20.4,  21.2

PPG:   5.2,  6.4,   6.8,   6.5

RPG:  4.1,  4.8,   3.8,   3.9

APG:  1.3,  1.1,  1.3,  1.7

Sounds like a perfect portal guy for Kelvin Samspon to scoop up to add his returning core. Plays hard, tough nosed, steady all 4 years. Although the change of pace from Purdue to Houston may be an issue, but he’s athletic enough IMO.

Houston basically returns everyone I think, and will add a couple portal additions. They should be tough once again.

I kinda see the vision here but Sampson’s Houston guys are all legit tough SOBs on the court, and Gillis is a multi year first team all fake tough IMHO

I mean, Edey ran the show as he should have. Smart by Painter but Gillis can shoot that thing. Probably should be taking 6-8 a game somewhere. Him getting Creaned if that is what happened is wild to me.

Staffs heads must be spinning. Somto could be an interesting backup 5 option or he could be the next Hanner Parea. I think I like the NAIA guy better but athleticism. It ain’t easy. And guards?

And guards Galore. Get 2 starters of the bunch and hopefully ones that can flat out ball. I still love Boogie. Small, who doesn’t seem priority 1. Tough choices.

And whoever we target at a “4” won’t be a starter.

They got a lot to figure out.

Morton sure as hell did

Supposedly he let the staff know last fall that he would be entering the portal at the end of the year.  Probably part of the reason Painter oversigned by so much.  By the same token, it's also part of the reason that Painter cut his minutes from 25 to 10 from his junior to senior year (plus the fact that he simply isn't any good).

Drew Thewell of Morehead State has visits set to Iowa and SMU.  Already visited UCF and is setting up visits to Michigan, Wake Forest and Miami.  So that's 2 Big Ten schools, 2 ACC schools, and a Big 12 school.

He put up gaudy assist numbers this year (6.2 per game) but he isn't really a scorer (10 ppg and just 7.1 ppg over 4 years at Morehead State) and is just an okay shooter.  Guess he's living his best life and traveling the country taking visits, but a guy like that lining up 5 visits to power 5 schools is just nuts.

Didn’t Dickinson supposedly get something along those lines from KU? Off the top of my head I can’t think of a college player that would be worth something like half of your NIL budget.

This is college basketball. There is no salary cap. There are really no rules. Coaches are sliding into DM's daily, during the season and after the season. Whether the kid is in the portal, coaches are still reaching out. Does your program have good NIL support? You're in luck. Are you a mid-major head coach with a pretty good kid with pretty good numbers? Sorry, he's entering the portal.

This is why head coaches are retiring. This is why the NCAA will be mid-majors only here in a few years. B1G and SEC will create the new league.

They will have to I mean in three years guys will be asking for 3 million each. I'd be fine with two separate leagues honestly.

Assuming nothing is done to rein in NIL, it will be interesting to see what happens to the annual contributions to schools who underperform in the eyes of the big donors.   Even the most diehard big donor fans will expect to see a return on their investment.  They may be shortsighted in their approach but in the long run they won't back a loser.  That's not how they got rich to begin with.

Kid from Ball State I mentioned the other day -- Basheer Jihad, 6'9" forward who averaged 18.6 points, 8 rebounds and shot 35% from three -- has committed to Arizona State.

Brendan Hausen, Villanova, enters the portal.  Quality perimeter shooting role player.  Took 176 shots last, 160 were threes and hits 38% of his threes.  Averaged 6.2 points in 17.6 minutes.

Jonas Aidoo, Tennessee, put his name in both the portal and draft.  6'11", started all 36 games for Tennessee.  Averaged 11.4 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks in 25 minutes.

Washington State point guard Myles Rice trending towards Indiana – The Daily Hoosier

Snip it below from the article above:

"The 6-foot-3 and 180-pound Rice rewrote the school freshman record book at WSU, breaking the single-game scoring, single-season scoring, single-season steals, single-season assists, single-season field goals, and single-season free throw percentage records. He averaged 14.8 points per game and led the Cougars to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 16 years."

If Rice did this as a freshman at IU he'd have twice maybe three times the recognition that he has currently.  And yes some may say the offseason brings all sorts of opinions but he would have had a chance at being drafted at a minimum in the 2nd rd had he of put those stats up at IU.
