Tyson is interesting because what position would Woody want him to play. He seems like a 3 at this level, but does that mean MM is gone? Will MM finally play the 4? Do they think Tyson could play the 2? It's super early but so far I have only really seen them target backup level rim protectors...maybe they finally learned and MR will be at the 5.

We should absolutely get Hickman. Two MVC transfers were absolutely key to the two best teams in the league this year in Domask and Jones, and Hickman would be here in a heartbeat if offered. He wants to come home.

Where does Bryson Tucker fit?  He's a 5 star who will most likely be guaranteed starting wherever he goes.  It looks like he could play the 2 or 3.  I think Reneau will mostly play the 4 this year.  Assuming we bring in a starting center that would leave Reneau at 4, Mgbako the 3 and Tucker the 2.  That means a portal point guard with Galloway backing up the 3, 2, and 1; Leal backing up the 2 and 3, Cupps backing up the 1, and Newton backing up the 2.  If we get Tucker, I'm not seeing a lot of guard minutes for any incoming transfer outside of a starting point guard. Not sure where any small school guards are going to compete for minutes if we get Tucker.

Tucker is a 3.  Would think it would necessitate MM at the 4.

This would mean Reneau at the 5 or coming off the bench.  Defensively, Reneau cannot play the 5 against good teams or teams with a large post player.  I'm just not seeing us as a fit for Tucker unless MgBako goes pro. I just don't see Tucker going anywhere without being promised a starting role.

Arrest[edit]

Johnson pleaded guilty to two misdemeanor charges in December 2022 for simple assault and strangulation, stemming from a September 5th incident in the same year where he struck a woman multiple times, causing bruising, and forcing her head into a bed, making it difficult for her to breathe. Johnson was suspended from the Pitt Men's basketball team during this period, but was reinstated after pleading guilty. Johnson was sentenced to a year of probation and required to complete batterer's intervention. Johnson took a redshirt in the 2022–23 season as a result.[3][4][5] Subsequently, the university announced in August 2023 that Johnson was no longer enrolled.[6] Shortly after, Johnson matriculated at Clarendon College, a community college in Texas.[7]

Sounds like he'd fit in well at MSU.

Reneau isn’t coming off the bench.

There's a better chance that I hit the lottery in the next week than there is that Reneau would come off the bench.

Tucker Devries, Drake. Two time MVC player of the year. 6’7” Guard/wing.  21.6 ppg, 6.7 rpg, 3.7 apg.  44/36/81.  This year’s Knecht?

His dad just took the W. Virginia job. Don’t you think he’ll follow?

Reneau can and has played the 5. He was the backup 5 his freshman year at IU. That was his only role most of the season. Later in the year he started to get limited minutes next to TJD at the 4.

Reneau is a post player, and projects as one of the better post players in the conference. He should be our starting 5 next year. I'm all for bringing in a bigger center to be in the rotation, and I'm not opposed to occasional looks where that guy and Reneau play together. It just shouldn't be our primary option.

Does Woodson agree with me... I kind of doubt it.

Good player (and I know others already answered about him going to WVU) but I'm not sure him and Knecht are on the same planet. Probably more a credit to Knecht than a knock on Tucker in fairness, but I'll be curious to see how he holds up in the Big 12.

Neither could Ware. See the Auburn, Uconn, and both Purdue games. But he played there all year long.

True, but Ware handled Wisconsin, Maryland, Minnesota, Michigan State, and Penn State during our 5-game win streak.  He was truly a difference maker on both ends in those games. I think he learned from the butt whippings earlier in the year.

If Louisville hires Pat Kelsey, he's going to have his work cut out for him.  Everybody hitting the portal there.  Skyy Clark and Mike James already in, now Tre White and Brandon Huntley Hatfield join.

White:  6'7" wing.  Played his freshman year at USC.  12.3 points and 5.9 rebounds last year at Louisille.  Poor perimeter shooter, decent slasher.  35th ranked player in class of 2022.

Huntley-Hatfield, 6''10" post.  Played his freshman year at Tennessee, last two years at Louisville.  12.9 ppg, 8.4 rpg.

Joshua Ola-Joseph, Minnesota, in the portal.  6'7" forward.  Two years eligibility.  Started 43 games in two seasons with the Gophers.  57/40/65 shooter over two season.  Not a tremenously high volume three point shooter but about 1/4th of his shots are threes.  Over two seasons, averaged 19 mpg, 7.4 points and 2.5 rebounds.
