NCAA MBB Transfer Portal

I'm not a fan of whining at any time but it makes a whole lot more sense to whine in February if that were to actually happen than it does to peremptorily whine now that it could possibly happen.

Ideally, it would be great to have a clear backup for each position plus a couple other backups capable of covering multiple positions. In reality, recruiting is not like a NBA 2K draft, the players ultimately decide where they want to play and "come be a back up likely playing 10 minutes or less per game" is a hard sell. It is an especially hard sell in transfer portal recruiting.

I wanted to make a Madden reference. Great job!

Southern Utah PG Peter Dadson Jr. Has entered the NCAA Transfer Portal.   6'4" played HS ball at Hillcrest Prep.  Didn't bother to look for his stats.

He’s Aussie or Kiwi, 1 or the other. So, I’m sure he’ll end up at St Mary’s because they all do.

He's Australian and didn't play last season so no college stats to see.

That doesn’t really put to rest the fears of needing an extra guard due to potential injuries.

Another way to say it is that our starting backcourt that we desperately need to be healthy all year both have injury histories.

I’m a big Galloway fan, too. I think I’ve wrote before that if he can add a pull-up jumper off the dribble the way he added a spot-up jumper last year, he’ll be competing for an All-conference spot.

I don't understand why this is a fear at all. If we should fear "injury at guard as very detrimental to our team" .... every team and program should.

My only argument would Galloway and now Johnson have a history of getting injured. And now they're down a freshmen. So you're primary backups are Cupps, Leal (who has an injury history of own) and Gunn. Although you are correct, any team can say this about any position, I think the concern is Johnson is coming back from a season ending injury and Galloway's game seems to put him at higher risk of injury than others. And if either goes down for any amount of time, you're relying on guys who have not played or contributed much at all. I do think it's silly to worry about what ifs, but one "reliable" back up would be nice to have. That being said, Gunn can't play any worse and if Leal can't give us 5-10 minutes off the bench, then I don't know why he's on the team. Cupps, I think should be able to do the same.

I can understand the concern but Johnson's season ending injury was just a broken bone instead of a ligament or tendon injury. So there isn't any reason to think that he won't be fully recovered, will have the same injury again, or have a similar injury.

Agree -- but with the caveat that we're thin at guard and those two both play aggressively, which I think was OGIUAndy's point. Galloway does get injured, has missed a number of games, X is tough as nails, but he also plays an uber aggressive, attacking style, and yes it wasn't a lig or tendon, but it was still a season-ending injury. I've been hoping we'd land a good, dependable backup but that's a tough sell, and the rising sophs are still largely unproven, imo. Newton's a wild card, his knee injury is a question mark

I agree on Galloway and have had similar concerns about his playing style leading to injuries in the past.

I doubt Newton will play much this year. His injury was a joint injury and has had setbacks with recovery. Freshmen tend to have an adjustment period to the college game and that injury probably sets back his timeframe for acclimation. That's assuming he's even recovered enough to play in the first place. He would also have to overcome rust from not playing much his senior year.

As far as the guard situation, I see basically 3 players who can play the PG position. For the other position, I look at that as just a wing position meaning that in many situations using players that are considered a "3" would work if needed.

I hear you, but see us as thin at guard, and Cupps has promise but is another unproven frosh coming into the B1G's rough-play college game. If Gallo goes down, we're in trouble fast. Same for X, imo.

But that's every team in the country, if their starting 1 or 2 gets hurt.

I think Cupps is going to be closer to a 6th man, than he will "only being able to play 5-10 mins".

I am also in the camp of "I think A Leal can play 5-10 mins a night".

What are you basing your 5-10 minutes a game from Leal on? He might be on the team cause he likes IU but that does not mean he has the skill to play big ten basketball.

Leal won Indiana Mr. Basketball at Bloomington South, but he hasn't been able to crack the rotation on a consistent basis with the Hoosiers. His playing time has decreased all three years, and at this point, it's probably unrealistic to expect a major jump in production. But if Leal is knocking down outside shots and defending well in nonconference play, Woodson will have no choice but to play him.

Indiana’s depth at guard was a question before Newton’s injury update. Now it is a greater concern. Relying on unproven guards off the bench is a risky proposition, and unless Gunn, Cupps or Leal show significant strides, Indiana's failure to add a veteran guard in the transfer portal will come back to bite the Hoosiers.

No it’s not. We have good depth up front and at best questionable depth at guard. You’re such a contrarian, lol.

I appreciate the compliment.

I'll stick to the topic.. we have a lot of depth protecting the rim? Nope.

We have a lot of "proven" guys upfront? Nope.

Hell.. combined at the Power 5 conference level, do we even have 20 total starts? I think.. nope.

He's older than me at this point. He should be able to grind out a few minutes and not embarrass himself. Maybe not in crunch time or against tougher competition, but yes, I think he should be able to play some spot minutes outside of mop up time.

He may have to play just because if we have guard injuries. Its either that or they will have to play Banks at guard.
