You’ve made the decision that this is absolutely true and we are doomed b/c one single anonymous “high major coach”threw out a crazy quote they obviously didn’t attach their name with to one beat writer?

No.  Just the feel that we are backing out of top dollar portal entires. That we have 12-14 million total for the team. And the portal is more expensive than ever based on everyone’s reporting.  That plus needing 4-5 starters doesn’t math well.  It’s an overall feel from all these aspects.

Burton is currently rated a top 10 overall player in the portal and Estrella and Fru are both top 5-6 guys at their position. How much do you think these guys cost? They aren’t cheap.

Which is precisely why we won’t build a top 25 roster yet again.   Maybe we can outsmart the room of college basketball scouts this time around???

Or -- what I consider the most likely fact -- the coach who said you need $14 to $18 million if you need 5 or more players is being hyperbolic.  At this point, the market for a player is what they are asking -- but moving forward that reality IMO is going to see a lot of players not getting what they feel is their asking price and the values drop.  When you hear that players are asking for -- say -- 30% higher than last year, that doesn't mean they will get 30% more NIL.  I mean, it was only about a week ago that there rumors that Fru was asking for $4 million.  The rumors that have been going around lately are $3 million.

If teams need $14-18 million to compete, then only about ten teams will compete. Yet 25 teams will be ranked. And top 25 teams should be considered competitive.

Therefore, as my family says about our dog Milo, I am confuzzled.

Yes, I think you're both accurate in what you're saying.

This is not such a neat and clean market. There's not transparency and there's a ton of motivation to inflate numbers.

Few will actually get what they ask for. Staffs need to have an acceptable range they're willing to spend on their targets. Have to know when to prioritize and when to be aggressive or pass. Timing is everything.

I’m not sure that’s true anymore. It’s just an old way of thinking based on a newspaper (those still exist?) poll. Only about 9-12 teams were truly competing for a title. Maybe less. Only Florida suffered any real upset among those teams. And things mostly played out as one would suspect. We’re in the world of haves and have-nots now.

And that’s the frustrating thing. Financially we are close. But in every other facet we are far.

If your expectation for this portal haul is building a roster that competes for a national title next year you’re simply setting yourself up for failure. It isn’t happening.

I do know that.  I set my hopes of top 25.  I think that should be reasonable for Indiana and its resources. I don’t have to remind you though that Michigan and Louisville have similar resources.  Look at their last 2 years.  We realistically should be somewhere around that spread of results. But we don’t be, likely.  And we’ll have excuses for why not.

Player development and retention will be key moving forward. You mention Michigan and Louisville specifically, 2 universities we can reasonably assume have a similar budget as us. Last year, Louisville brought on only 3 new portal players. Michigan brought 4. We all know by now spending in free agency is going to cost more than retention. Last year, adding 10 portal players we weren't able to add as much value per player. Doesn't help that our scouting was a huge strikeout while Michigan hit on all 4 of their players (getting players that complement each others' skill sets very well). We look to bring in maybe 7 this year? So still maybe not as much value per player, but better than last year and scouting and "fit" has to be better.

And while our season was much more of a disaster, Louisville was also a disappointment. For a school that spends, they expected to be in the championship mix with Conwell, Wooley, McKneely, and talented freshmen.

So you agree that Louisville should be in the championship mix?  Nothing separates us from them. That’s my point.  With what we can spend, setting goals of scraping into the tournament is asinine. Sure that should be minimum expectation but we should build teams with championship aspirations too if we are spending top 10-15 money.

I agree that based on their additions, their (Louisville) fans have a right to be upset with a first weekend exit, yes. BUT it turns our their roster construction had its own issues (streaky shooting + offense stalled completely when 3s didn't fall, weak rebounding + interior defense). And yes I believe making the tournament is the bare minimum but we should strive for more. Roster construction was poor, I have guarded optimism that this year it can be better.

I will say that spending top 10-15 money is nice but doesn't guarantee jack ****. Spend wisely and get guys that fit together in your system.

I mean…you said “precisely why we will not”….you seem pretty resigned to our fate less than 24 hours into the portal being open.
