IUBB vs Penn State - 12/29/20 @ 8:30 on BTN

Recommended Posts

Last game of this virus infected year.  Good riddance 2020.   Hoosiers (5-4) (0-2) will try to right the ship against Penn State (3-3) (0-2).    Kevin Kugler and Robbie Hummel handling the BTN broadcast.

Some extracts from Archie's Monday night radio show.

Penn State is guard-heavy, they play fast, and they "shoot the crap out of the ball."  Even without Lamar Stevens, Miller says "They are way more difficult to defend."

Anthony Leal, "He's worked so hard to put himself in a position to help us. Hopefully we can find more ways to do that."

Says he needs to "give a little bit more rope" to Khristian Lander. Biggest challenge for him is defensively.

"A big, big step for our team is Jerome Hunter. Without a doubt, we're counting on Jerome to give us more." Miller says Hunter just had his best practice of the season today. Says he can be a better defender than he's been.

Rob Phinisee and Al Durham are most definitely the ones that have to step up their game. "There's no question about it, that Rob and Al have to get rolling here." Thinks it's a confidence deal. Said they "came ready" today in practice, which is a plus.

Highlighted Trey Galloway's ability as a creator/passer: "He's gotten other guy's shots ... a lot of Armaan's success is off of Trey's success breaking guys down and kicking out." "He will take it right into the fire. He's not afraid."

Need this win massively. Hope to see Lander play at least 10 minutes. Phinisee needs to get his butt in gear coming off the bench and be a spark. TJD needs to go all out beast mode. Gotta show up tonight. Perfect time to run a team out of the gym.

Lot of days I really grind my teeth reading your posts but I don't disagree one iota with this one.   I'd just add that Hunter also needs to get his butt in gear.

Penn State is a funny team: they have three or four guys that can get hot and light it up, but without Stevens no reliable go-to guy.

If PSU has an off night they really could be 'run out of the gym'. More likely? Someone gets going and they hang in with us, but we can still win even if that happens.

For the mojo of the program this is pretty much a must-win game.

I would  like to see us play with the urgency this game merits, see Galloway look at the basket (I do not mean that as a criticism of him as he has been a great glue guy, his career has barely started, you can tell he is a coaches son etc...would just like him to take another step in his progression by being a little more of an offensive threat), see one of the other freshman have a good game and have either or both of Rob and Jerome step-up. Rob and Jerome seem like great guys to have on a team, both have suffered injuries that seem to unfortunately have long-term effects (and I feel bad for them) but at some point they have to consistently produce or give up more minutes to the younger guys.

Agreed. We really need his versatility on the court. He's someone who can play both forward spots in college. This season he just doesn't seem to care. I'd say try starting him to see if they lights a fire under his butt, but I don't know. This is kind of a free season for everyone since you can return next season and it seems like Phinisee, Durham and Hunter are treating just like that. An unimportant free year.

I absolutely love watching Galloway play ball.  He knows and sees the angles better than anyone on the team.  The one area he does need to improve is knowing the passes he can/can't make at this level.  I feel confident he'll continue to get better in this area.  I would also like to see him attack to score more rather than almost always kicking it out.

The rest of the guard and wing crew, sans Armaan, could learn from him.  I'd much rather see Durham in Armaan's old role of catching it on the wing then either taking the open shot, take a few dribbles to an open shot if his defender closes out too hard, or swing it back.  He seems to hold the ball a few beats too long allowing the defense to recover.  Phinisee seems extremely hesitant to drive.  I believe this is the reason he looks a step slow compared to the previous seasons.

Hunter needs to get going quick, fast, and in a hurry.  He's too talented to be playing the way that he has to start this season.  His three ball can still get him minutes but he needs to defend and rebound at a much higher rate.  I'd like to see him setting a cross screen for either Race/Trayce and then coming off another screen for a wing/corner three if the ball is swung.

These next two games are huge to how the season will play out.  Let's hope that Phinisee, Durham, and Hunter can find something in their game that will elevate them through the rest of the season.  Armaan was struggling early and found something that has propelled him to playing at an All Conference level.

GO HOOSiERS!

I almost would like to see Galloway and Rob start in the backcourt. Whether it's on Archie or on himself (probably a good bit of both), I just don't have faith in Al anymore.  (At one point, I thought he had the potential to make a big leap and be a really good -- not great -- B1.0 player. But it never really happened). I want to see what he can do coming off the bench. Four years later, he's still doing the same stuff that gets himself into trouble: those crazy drives where he goes to the bucket against 2-3 guys and flings it up, just hoping it'll go in -- had way, way more than my share of those.

Galloway brings energy and basketball smarts -- he's still adjusting to the speed of the college game and at times, tries to make passes that aren't there, but he's not killing us.
