I am becoming less and less sure of it as the fall approaches. Indiana should still be seen as the favorite for Trey Kaufman, but the longer things go, the more difficult you have to think it will be for Kaufman to pick the in-state bunch compared to all others.

One would have to assume that if Kaufman was going to commit to Indiana, it would have happened already. It is never easy to be declared the favorite so early in the process and remain the leader for a long time. North Carolina offered last week so it is definitely one to watch, as is Virginia, a program that has remained involved for Kaufman for the past year and has a need in the frontcourt that is tailored for Kaufman’s abilities.

Indiana’s class does not depend entirely on Kaufman picking the Hoosiers, but he would help in a lot of ways. IU is one of the few to beat for Mason Miller, too, so if not Kaufman, maybe Indiana attempts to pick up things even further with the four-star. With word going around that Kaufman might want to leave his state for college and with UNC’s latest offer, Indiana’s chances have begun to dwindle.

 

I just talked to Trey on Saturday and I can tell you that nothing that Evans is saying resonates with me.  He is a national guy, and I can tell you that no one from Indiana's Rivals site was there on Saturday or any other time all summer.

good write up on Trey. Nothing new with regards to recruiting but a nice background piece. Kinda shows that he is a patient and diligent person all around so that fact that he hasn't committed anywhere isn't surprising after reading this.

It's a great read. 

I know that every player, every young man is different; but the character, the personality, the academics, the family, the disdain for the limelight make me think so much of the qualities attributed to Cody Zeller.

“For me personally corona (the COVID-19 pandemic) is definitely not going to speed up my timeline,” Kaufman said during a radio interview on 98.5 WJHI on Wednesday.

“Since they (the NCAA) pushed it back and I can’t take as many visits as I would want to, my mom and I are considering driving up to some of the colleges that are recruiting me, but it’s just not going to be the same,” Kaufman said.

Kaufman set the record straight on his acquaintance with Lander.  “Khristian is a great guy,” Kaufman said.  “We haven’t been on the same AAU team for the past two years and I think people kind of took that as I don’t like Khristian or Khristian doesn’t like me.  It’s actually the opposite.  I’ve always looked forward to playing with Khristian.  He’s a great player.  I remember we went to Purdue for a camp, and just the chemistry that we built there, we have a good connection.”

Sounds like Trey and mom are preparing to leave for their UVa and UNC campus visits which is what Trey mentioned in the article above.

As always, thanks for the information you have.

 

I view this as a good thing.  The plan has always been to take the visits, and he wasn't going to deviate.  We know that he would have preferred to have open campuses/tours etc.  Looks like he is no longer going to wait to see if restrictions are lifted.  Perhaps he wants to check these boxes so he can take his visits and ideally be closer to making his decision.  I like this far better than waiting on the off chance he can go and get the 5* treatment later, while we wait.  

 

Props to Trey for being diligent here.  My Hoosier fan side thinks that the recent offers and recruiting activity are at least some incentive for him to claim his spot.  Here's hoping.  Add in the excellent weekend playing with Logan, his recent comments praising Lander.  Trey would be another excellent player.  We haven't had recruiting like this in so long.  Really impressive work by the staff.  I think Crean showed us that us being Indiana alone isn't draw enough.

Well, if it helps a decision come sooner, then it is a good thing either way.  Better to know sooner rather than later if he is coming to IU or not.

Only question mark is the fifth one. IU,Purdue, Virginia and UNC are a clear top 4

I would say either one of UL, UK, or Xavier. Not that UK has recruited him hard or even offered, but he might include them for “added value” to his main groups (as much as that pains me to type). But, I know UL has come back from its earlier recruiting mistake and they could be his 5th.

I am a proud IU graduate, but I will point out that both University of North Carolina (#29) and University of Virginia (#28) are ranked higher academically than IU (#79) in the 2020 edition of Best Colleges. One can make a good argument that all three are excellent academic institutions and that Trey can't go wrong if he chooses any of the three in terms of academics. But I don't think you can make a credible argument that North Carolina is a poor choice academically.  There is opportunity to receive an excellent education for any student whether an athlete or not who has "interest in academics."
