I haven't watched a minute of high school basketball since 1994, so forgive me if this is a dumb question. How in the world did Anthony Leal win Mr Basketball with Trey Galloway finishing 3rd??

Wasn’t Trey injured for part of his senior season? Leal is an outlier. Probably the worst Mr Basketball in 25 years. I think Perkins at Iowa was second and he is a solid B1G player.

He was the best player on the best team in the state. Pretty sure they were the favorite to win state before COVID stopped the season.

Leal led his high school team Bloomington South to a 26-0  undefeated season and number one ranking in the year when the state tournament was cancelled due to COVID. Leal was a knockdown shooter and clutch player in high school winning a couple of games with dramatic buzzer beaters. He was and still is a smart player. He was recruited by Iowa, Maryland and Stanford. But Galloway is clearly more athletic than Leal. As prep players, Leal was ranked #156 and Galloway #157. Galloway was considered a really good player but his team--Culver--played a bit out of the media limelight. Contrary to Leal, Galloway was more of slasher than a shooter in high school. The success of Leal's team had a lot to do with Leal winning Mr. Basketball. There was no Trayce Jackson Davis or Romeo Langford that year.

If that's the case (I'm sure it is, I have no reason to doubt you) then can we stop giving individual awards to the best player on the best team?  There's no way Leal was deserving of Mr Basketball of any area really.

Sorry, back to Trey Galloway.  I really wish he completed that dunk on Edey

That wasn’t about who the better college players is. It was about who the better high school player was and there’s a legit argument to be made that was Leal

Based upon more than just being the best player on the best team?  What's your legit argument?

As I wrote above, Leal was consider a knockdown shooter who played extremely well in the clutch. He led his team to an undefeated season. BTW, being the best player on the best team in the state counts for something.

Yes, it should win you team MVP and Captain!  But Mr Basketball?  Man, I'm having a hard time seeing it.

I saw neither in HS but Galloway’s counting stats were dampened by playing through injuries as both a junior and senior, if I recall. My hunch is his earlier shooting issues have some connection to that era, which included a wrist injury.

My recollection is that he was the standout among those two, plus Lander, on the Indiana Elite team they all played on in summer 2019, before his senior year. (Not that this was reflected in rankings, which would weigh the injury-riddled HS seasons and, at the time, Lander’s theoretical upside. But I thought watching them play he was clearly the best player at the time, setting aside awards or projection.)

You literally admitted to not watching high school basketball so how can you honestly have an opinion on this. This would be like me having an opinion on the better cricket players

Mr Basketball voters weren’t the only ones who thought Leal was better

Bro...I'm asking questions.  Why the attitude?

Ivey went the prep route and wasn’t eligible for Mr Basketball.  Down year in Indiana from a talent standpoint.   In a year where the season got cancelled they probably gave it to the best player on the best team.     Odd year for sure.   So odd that espn acknowledged Renn as Mr basketball for that year during a Purdue broadcast.    Renn won Indiana Gatorade player of the year which underclassmen can win unlike Mr Basketball where only seniors can win

In high school Leal and Galloway were much closer together rankings and performance wise. However, IMO there's a bias against private school players when it comes to Mr. Basketball voting. Unless a private school player is head and shoulders above everyone else, they are unlikely to win Mr. Basketball.

Leal was the best player in a down year in Indiana. Neither Leal nor Galloway were highly ranked but both were good high school players. They played together on AAU. Leal was a better shooter and a smart player. Indiana Mr. Basketballs don't always go on to have great college careers. Larry Bird was 3rd in Mr. Basketball voting in 1974.  Anyone know who won? Steve Collier and Ron Taylor were co-Mr. Basketball that year. Neither were great after high school.

Great point!
Chippy Will Sheehey was an effective role player, but was not very effective as a leader.
Trey Galloway is already one of the team leaders and appears (to me) will be the go to on-court voice of the coaching staff once Race, Trayce, Miller, and X are gone.
Unless JHS is back
Unless X gets a waiver
