Game Thread: Indiana State Friday 7pm BTNplus

Recommended Posts

BGleas  had the best post in the thread. A roster full of role players. This is why I asked after HH (and continue to do so) who is our best player? We dont have one. That said, I believe Archie and the staff will mold these guys into some semblance of a team.

Our best player vis a vis ability is Davis.
Our best players vis a vis doing what it takes to win are Hartman, Durham, and Green.

Anybody thinking like me? I️ think we need a Shaman to come to AH and exercise the demons that haunt that joint/team.
What could it hurt?
I️ had 7 beers during that debacle. It didn’t help this morning to ease that butt spanking.... Unfortunately.

I’ve been thinking lately that we’re cursed. The “Bobby Knight Curse”

Our roster just isn't very good.  Granted we're better than a team that gets blown out at home to Indiana State, but we just don't have enough guys right now.
I don't think Hartman is going to make that much of a difference.
We'll get better eventually, and when we do, the roster is going to look a LOT different than it currently does.

Hartman feels like an urban legend at this point. Lol

I haven’t had beer for three weeks today. Last night was the first time I’d been craving it since three weeks ago. I didn’t give in though. I’ve learned it doesn’t mask the pain of a bad game. I learned that from the Crean era

Watching the replay on BTN now.  Oof, talking about ugly.  I'm sorry, if talent is the reason for looking this bad against ISU then no one had better ever say Crean was a good recruiter again.

Under normal circumstances no coach should ever get free passes with IUBB, and I refuse to give Miller one.  That being said fixing all the nonsense Crean taught them isn't as simple as "forget literally everything he taught you, there's a reason he got fired and still isn't coaching", so he has some time to figure it out.

I haven't read much of this thread, nor did I see the game yet (thanks BTN), but I'd like to throw out a few facts for anyone who's losing it over this loss:

1.  ISU is a good team.  They beat Illinois and tested PU pretty good.

2. It was our first real game of the year while our opponent has already played two B10 teams.  That is always going to be a difficult game, especially when the opponent is no patsy.

3. As evidenced by the ISU point total and record number of 3 pointers, very predictably our defense is not good at all.  This is to be expected when it's the first game under a completely new system.

4. Let's face it, we lost our 3 best players from the previous season and don't have a roster full of difference makers.  There's a reason why we are projected to finish in the bottom half of the conference.

All of these factors are inter-related.  Most of us predicted we'd struggle early (and we will).  As the team begins to play the way Arch is teaching them, and we become more experienced under that system, I have no doubt we'll be much more competitive.  Will we compete for the B10 title?  Unlikely, but this should be no surprise to anyone.

The future will be bright and we need to keep in mind that this is the very beginning of a process.

Alright people....

It's now the next day. Time to detach from the shock and emotion of getting thumped last night. Now you analyze, accept, and move on from it. Tomorrow is another game and we should look forward to how this team responds to adversity. As much fun as it would have been to see our team come out looking like a well oiled machine and put the rout on them, maybe it's better to have adversity early. Personally I'm looking forward to seeing how they respond tomorrow. And you know what? It'll be far from perfect. There will be things to nit pick about. And even if it looks ugly, the effort will be better without a doubt. So just relax on the basketball front today, crew. It gets better.

If I could have slipped many of you a whiskey and Xanax last night I would have.

Robert Johnson played 36 minutes. He didn’t get yanked ever.

Rojo looks like he's in a major funk. Archie needs him to be a leader this year if we're going to succeed. Yanking him in the first game could destroy his confidence.  I have no problem with him playing 36 minutes.

In better news, the Trees will win The Valley if they shoot like that all year.

If they shoot like they did last night they'll do a lot more than just winning the Valley. I'm not sure another team shoots 17-22 from deep all year. Most were good looks but some were complete crap.

I doubt their 3PT% gets anywhere close to that the rest of the year.

Honestly, it's really been his M.O. while at IU.  He's had streaks of horrible shooting and bad games.  I don't say this to denigrate the guy, it's just what my impression of how his career thus far has gone.  We can hope that a new coach and being a senior make for a more effective and consistent season from Robert.

A lot of teams would take that from the free throw line.

I’d never seen anything like it. IU was outscored 51-12 from the 3 point line. That’s not gonna happen again all year. It was a really good game for Indiana State and a really bad game for IU. Just four less 3 balls and it’s a single digit loss. Nothing to get overly worried about if you ask me

Rojo isn't supposed to be the guy. A few have said it earlier but many of our guys are good when they are the third or fourth option on a team. If Rojo, Newkirk, Morgan aren't able to elevate their games to make up for the loss of JBJ, OG, TB...It's gonna be tough. I really like the long term prospects on Devan Davis and am still excited about the freshman but the rest of the roster at this point is meh. DG will have his ups and downs.
