The Indiana Hoosiers filled their coaching position with Archie Miller. Here is a look at what he has done on the recruiting trail in his time as both an assistant and head coach

On Saturday afternoon the Indiana Hoosiers made their men’s basketball coaching hire and they chose Dayton’s Archie Miller. Miller recently completed his sixth season as head coach with his fourth trip consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament.

Before getting to Dayton, Miller was an assistant coach at Arizona State, Ohio State, and Arizona, so he is more than familiar with the high-major recruiting scene, and has excelled on the recruiting trail throughout his career.
As a head coach he has had two very impressive classes at Dayton. The first was this past graduating senior class in which he battled high-major programs for players such as Scoochie Smith out of New York and Kendall Pollard out of Chicago.
Those two were stalwarts of the Flyers program and each multi-year starters who really played a big role in the success the team had.
Also this incoming success featured going guard McKinley Wright who had multiple high-major offers and shooting guard Jordan Davis from South Carolina who has on the high-major radar. This 2017 class combined with class of 2016 academic redshirt, and four-star prospect Kostas Antetokounmpo were expected to be the heart and soul of the Flyers for the next several years.
As an assistant at Arizona, Miller was instrumental in getting players such as Derrick Williams and Solomon Hill to commit to the program immediately upon getting the job.
Before that at Ohio State, Miller played a significant role in getting Jordan Sibert and Aaron Craft to stay home and attend school in Columbus.
Also Miller has a good relationship with some in Indiana. One of the biggest gets of his career was Fort Wayne native Steve McElvene. McElvene was seen as a tremendous get, and was set to have a great career in Dayton before tragically passing away this off season.
Still Miller developed a good relationship with the coaches of the high powered Spiece Indy Heat program, and he has continued to recruit in the state of Indiana for the past several years.
Overall Miller is seen as somebody with a lot of ability to develop and cultivate relationships. Miller has high-major experience on the recruiting trail, but also knows how hard you have to work as a coach of a non-power league program.
In general this is a coach who is a very good recruiter, and should work hard for Indiana on the trail with a focus on regional recruits, and then spreading nationally to try and land stars.

Everyone is so concerned with Miller being able to recruit the elite players. That is not what its about here at Indiana it is about recruiting the right players that fit Indiana. Miller first has to create a culture and then recruit the right players that fit that culture for the program to take flight and the fans to back it. I think it is really very simple at Indiana to gain the fans support. All you have to do is build your program around one simple word (DEFENSE) and don't ever shy away from it and never take it any BS from anyone, that is the HOOSIER way and we embrace it to the fullest. 

On recruiting we want the 4 year guy the 3 star guy who will blossom in the system. We don't need to be Kentucky to win a title that has already been proven here. For every "elite" player you need to have 3 other players that are the heart and sole of the program. Once upon a time we had a coach that understood that and has now been missing for 20 years and in a nut shell that is the problem Indiana has to resolve. Will Coach Miller take that approach? Will he get the best in state talent? How many players from Indiana did he have on his Dayton roster in the last six years? 

I want IU to be great again and I want Coach Archie Miller to be the guy that gets it done, but if he falls into that trap the national media wants him to be in. I will be his loudest critic. Do it the IU way the only way. GO HOOSIERS!

Been pumping Archie for two years, so I guess you could count me in the "good hire" camp.

Followed Dayton religiously for better part of four seasons now. Dude can coach. He makes adjustments, learns from his mistakes, and understands the game. I don't think recruiting will be an issue, he's been around high level college ball for a while and is still young. He's recruited, and landed, 5 stars as a lead recruiter at Arizona.

When you make your list of what you want in a IU coach, and start at the bottom, he just checks boxes off as you work your way up the list. The only one left is high level success at a high major. Opportunity, meet preparation.

Good morning Hoosier basketball junkies!

Just woke up, fed/watered the animals, poured some java and here I am; totally excited about the present and future of IU hoops. Who knows if this high risk/ high reward situation will work out and maybe he wasn't the first choice; but damn- when you have a solid X and O guy that preaches D; how do you, as an IU fan, not get excited or at least have a "cautious optimism?" 

Me? I'm gonna drink the Cream and Crimson kool aid. I just think his mentality; seen in his players on the court, pedigree and fire will pay dividends in getting this program to where we want it. So although it's rainy here in K-town, I for one am seeing the sunshine return to our beloved hoops.

I didn't know that either. Calipari's slimy but he knows basketball. Having two top college coaches in his own family that he can turn to is great imo.

Our transition offense under Crean was pretty good, that's what won us games. However, we were limited by it because of our terrible defense and decision making.

With Archie as our coach, we should continue to thrive in transition offense even more.

Yeah that was definitely one of Crean's strengths.  I'm encouraged about ol' Archie, after researching him more.

He knows basketball for sure. I'm not sure about his in game decision making or his timeout play calling, haven't watched him enough.

I'm a little worried about his offense and his recruiting right now but perhaps that opens up with him being at Indiana now. He needs to get some momentum going this summer.

I had a good long talk yesterday with a coworker who is originally from Dayton. He follows the the Flyers almost as much as he follows UK. We discussed the possibilities of renewing the UK rivalry, the recruiting Archie has done, and most importantly his basketball IQ.

Overall he was pretty upset that Dayton lost him, while also being happy IU landed him. This is coming from a guy, who has found any reason possible, to give me **** for being the only IU fan at work. Like him, I believe the general consensus around the college basketball world, is that they are ready for us to be relevant again. They, like MOST of us, are excited to see Archie make us compete again.

Personally, I was a little upset after the announcement like a few others. Although, after spending the entire day reading other coaches opinions, seeing his body of work as a whole, and thinking about where we were just a couple of months ago, I went to bed fairly excited. I firmly believe the only way to go from here is up.

That being said, even though I'm going to miss my Belgian Ales, I'm ready to start stocking my fridge with Millers, and enjoying IU basketball again.

1)  Since Archie is an ex-point guard, I'd love to see him over in Illinois and reel in Mark Smith as his first recruiting coup and send a very loud message.

 

2)  Still haven't heard any reaction from '17 Justin Smith unless I missed it.

 

3)  How many days do we need to hold our breath waiting for possible transfer out annoucements?

He's already reached out to the recruits who backed out when Crean got fired. And I have a gut feeling once the team meets him nobody is going anywhere.
