Player and Recruit Retention News/Discussion & Potential Transfers

If Rojo really wanted to come back he would have announced by now...he is for sure looking for his options out of B-Town. If he comes back it is because it was his last resort and if that's the case then I would rather have a Grad transfer who will be playing 100% for the name on the front of the jersey and not someone who came back to IU because nothing else popped up

It's not near as good as it was when Bird, Johnson, Erving, Thomas, Garvin and those guys played. They played hard every game.

Players today take care of their bodies far better than the players of the past. They realize that going full throttle 100% of the time leads to shortened careers.

I saw this on inside the hall. How refreshing would it have been over the last 8 years, if our offense was could react to a defense that shut down the transition offense in this way. To immediately react and not waste 15-20 seconds of shot clock trying to figure out what to do. Though it is still really early since CAM was hired, I really think he is going to flip the script on fundamentals at IU with all of the videos and articles I have seen that display "his" game. His players seem to know and understand how to counteract a defense and that is something that we have been missing for awhile.

Wait, all those guys had nice long careers and still played hard.

Revisionist history. 30 years from now people will be saying the same thing about this group of players. It's easy to remember the good times without acknowledging that there were bad ones too.

Bird only played 13 seasons. Magic played 12.5. Thomas played 13. Players today are playing longer than that.

Vincer Carter just finished season 19. Kobe played 20. Paul Pierced played 19 years. LeBron is on year 14. Kevin Garnett played 21 years.

Pure conjecture. You can't substantiate anything because you do not know RoJo. If he wants to get out of Btown so bad I find it odd that he is still on campus as of Tuesday night.

Secondly, thinking that a random grad transfer will for some reason play harder than someone who has been here for 3 years is also pure conjecture.

I watch this video and saw more screens in it than the last 9 years of Crean.  The video is only 5 minutes long.

Players also aren't playing 3/4 years of college. They are generally retiring at the same age.

Not sure if those are the best players from the "previous generation to use as comparisons.

Sure, Bird had back problems largely due to his all-out style of play, but Isiah had a bad injury (which may or may not be addressed differently now) and Magic had HIV.

I don't think they are either, I just used them because they were the names that were used.

True, I didn't think about that. Takes us back to the "one and done sucks" discussion. Those guys were all instant contributors when they came into the league, thanks in large part to staying in college. Both leagues would be better off if players had to stay in college longer, but I digress lol.

It would be interesting to see the average amount of years for players now and then.

It's always been about 4.5 years for players. Hard to cherry pick stars and track as there are extenuating circumstances in both eras. But the average player doesn't last long.
