Lol they are ahead of us at the moment. Maybe not by much but they are close to the lead in NBA players with a stockpile of more on their team now and next year. We consider us a blueblood yet havent had a title in 30 years I am okay with that but the last 30 years they are on the same level if not better. Heck UCONN has the most titles since 99. MSU has a hall of fame coach and one of the best their program isnt blue blood but they are with Izzo as a coach. I think the word blueblood needs redefined.

Last 23 years Zona has a title, 4 final fours and 9 elite 8s that is just tourney success. They have a chance to add to those numbers this year. With the talent they have in the NBA it makes them in todays kids eyes a bigger program than us. I think I may one of the few IU fans that can be proud of our 5 titles but also realize that was 3 decades ago. It still makes us a borderline blue blood which we can get back to but if it doesnt happen soon we cant keep claiming it. That is why I want Billy D. He is the one sure thing that can bring us back to that level.

Yup. There is a chance that we could return to that tier, but as of right now we are not there.

If you drop away from Billy, Archie etc. you go to Andy Enfield !

I'd firmly pass on Enfield until he shows he can coach defense.  So far in his career his defenses have been even worse than Crean's, an average of 121.  His career best defense was 82.

I've seen enough 'all offense, no defense' during the last 9 years.

I think you can find an "IU guy" without it being an alum. I think a lot of coaches can fit that mold and be an outsider, so to speak. I think Crean was an "IU guy" in that he understood the IU values of graduating players, running a clean program (minus a few bumps in the road), and respecting the tradition. Crean is just a mediocre coach and isn't meeting the standard of winning that IU expects.

I also believe a lot of talent in-state has been missed and that the new coach brought in would do better in locking that talent up.

I like your thought process, but an IU guy wouldn't focus his recruiting nationally.  You can go get a kid or two, but there is so much talent in Indiana and the surrounding area within 3 hours of Bloomington...Butler and Purdue are getting WAY too much of it.   We seem to get 3* kids like Kentucky gets 5* kids; and it's not working.  Every kid Crean recruits needs the ball.  He asked last month why the players don't know how or when to cut.  Well....first of all, none of them grew up playing without the ball; and second, nobody's teaching them when, how, or why.   Indiana fans like Indiana basketball; not everything off the dribble.  That style only wins if you have superior talent, and we do not.  He (or any coach) needs to understand where he is.  I honestly don't think Crean gets it.  Everything else you said, I agree with.

If difference though. He was at FGCU and now USC. Not exactly pillars of college hoops. Enfield at IU would. E totally different man. Also holds the all time NCAA free throw shooting record.

Defense travels though.  You don't necessarily need to have some of the best resources in the country to show you can coach good defense, and his defenses haven't even been decent just various levels of bad.

For the love of God no. He is Crean 2.0. His teams dont play defense and its always run run run. Highly entertaining, but our collective blood pressure would be through the roof when the same issues we have seen the last 9 years continue under Enfield.

defensive efficience doesnt matter the conference. Archie Miller at Dayton and Gregg Marshall at WSU have had top 20 defenses in inferior programs/conferences. Saying Enfield wasnt at the right school is just excuse making. Just bc he breathes hoops doesnt mean anything either. Crean breathes hoops as well.

Enfield hasnt been higher than 5th in the PAC 12. Currently 93rd best defense. Hard pass.

You dont fire Tom Crean, and replace him with an inferior version of himself, Andy Enfield.

IDK. IU still needs a flashy hire imo. I don't think Collins fits that. Archie makes some sense.

Moving on now indicates they think they can get who they want.

And according to 0708 they never got down to option 3.

I agree that neither would be a slam dunk imo. Both are gambles I think. Guess I'm just used to being pessimistic about this program. I would be genuinely shocked if IU got who they wanted.
