TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

Business as usual for a power conference team to lose all 5 of its starters and an entire recruiting class? What exactly are you trying to prove here anyway? The dude is an excellent coach. Do some research on him. He's on everyone's list but people on this board for whatever reason. And I think it's because folks are mis-informed on him. He's brought in better players in 3 years than Archie Miller has in 6.

You just made the point for Archie in your argument lol. Archie has had way less talent yet always gets his team in the tourney and had success a few years. With more talent available to him it is easy to see him succeeding. He isn't a cant miss coach though. I would gladly take him over WoJo. That talent that he had last year didn't result in much success either in a Big East that after Nova was wide open. Seton Hall and Providence had their moments, but it is actually not a stretch to say Marquette didn't have more talent their either. Maybe not Providence.

No. No one deserves to win just because they work hard. I think a few times this year our guys felt like they deserved a win for showing up and they ended up getting embarrassed. You have to go out there and earn a win every game. However, they do deserve a coaching staff that puts them in the best possible position to win and right now they don't have that.

Look man.. If you want Y, and X happening is the only way that Y happens, you realize that X is necessary. That doesn't mean that you want it to happen, just that you recognize that you won't ever get the end goal if it doesn't. I want Crean fired and replaced with a coach that can make us an elite program again. In order for that to happen, we have to lose some games. I don't want us to lose, but it has to happen if we want a new coach, there's no way around it. If we don't we're stuck being mediocre for the next 15-20 years.

What happens if they lose the games u want them to lose and no coaching change happens. You might want Y as the end result and go ahead with X but what happens if it turns out you end up with Z instead of Y. I respect your opinion on the matter I just won't agree with it which is what a message board is for (different t opinions). I just don't follow your reasoning saying the kids don't deserve to win these games you want them to lose with a coach most people on here agree isn't the right coach but the same kids deserve a better coach.

Since iu being mediocre isn't a new phenomenon that has happen in the last 9 years and has been going on since 1995 some of the older posters have gone though a similar time regarding a coach that obviously wasn't the right guy. In my early 20s I had the same approach as you have now I wanted iu to lose to get rid of Davis. Anyone will be better then Davis and IU will return back to the mountain top. I'm still waiting. Earlier I said you probably didn't a have kids if u wanted someone's kids to lose for the benefit of the program as a whole. Having kids changed my perspective on my views in my early 20s. If someones kid sacrificed most of his childhood to become a division 1 player the hours of practice, aau traveling, etc. if it was my kid would I want them to fail? Like many on here I dreamed of playing basketball at Indiana and wearing the jersey with INDIANA on he front but like many I wasn't good enough or didnt sacrifice and put in the amount of work to make it so these kids act as proxies for some on here. Some of these kids worked their ass off since they were 6 to have a chance to live out their dream to play in a NCAA tournament with a chance at a title. So as I fan since I want crean gone (which I do) I should want that kids dream to fail for the programs best interest? Some can, I won't.
So when my 5 year old puts on his candy stripes tonight to match his 38 year old dad in his candy stripes I will be cheering for the Hoosiers to win despite my desire for a new coach.

I'd really love a change but man, I just don't think it's gonna happen.  Just a feeling.  A crappy feeling at that.  I honestly think if he continues to get us into the tournament, he is gonna be our coach.  We need to just start hanging sweet 16 banners in a section of assembly hall.  Count those as our championships.   :(

If we lose the games and still keep the same coach it would really really suck. That would be the worst case scenario. I mean they don't deserve to win in the sense that no team really "deserves" to win. Both sides of fans are going to think their team deserves it for all their hardwork, but they have to go out and earn it during the actual game. Sorry I don't really know the right words to use to put together what I mean lol. I don't hope the kids on the team fail after they've worked their entire lives to get where they are now. They wanted to come to my school so I hope they have as much success as possible here. They all seem like great kids. When I say I think losing would be better for the long-term of the program I imagine them still being here with the new coach. I'm not hoping they lose so the next group of kids can come in and succeed, I'm hoping it happens so they can come back next year with a new (hopefully greatly improved) coach who can help them live out their college basketball dreams. I think that would be better for them than squeeking into the tournament and getting bounced the first weekend, and then coming back next year and having another ride on the Crean roller coaster.

You're right about me not having kids though (I'm the same age as the guys on the team so thank god I don't) so I understand why our viewpoints on the matter are different. I guess I see it like this... Glass is going to have to make a decision soon because if he doesn't Crean is going to be recruiting players he's not under contract to coach for four years. If Crean manages to salvage the season and get us to the tournament and win a game or two, with the injuries we're dealing with, he's likely to get an extension. The time to make a choice is coming up soon and I'm really worried that he'll manage to do just enough to keep his job.

On a side note, enjoy watching the game with your son tonight. Those are some great memories to make regardless of the final score.

Thanks for the response back. That roller coaster isn't just the crean roller coaster it has been the Indiana basketball roller coaster since 1995. Since you are a younger fan and might not realize the end of the knight era wasn't great here is iu's tournament history ( notice 1995-2008) besides the magical run in 2002.

We both want the same thing, IU to be back on top just a different view on how to get there. Fwiw Bennett would be my choice if Stevens isn't available. Since we have had a one dimensional coached team for 9 years ( good offensive numbers), terrible defense i would be fine with taking a chance at the one dimensional coach with a great defense year in and year out and an offense that seems to be trending up (still pace of play would worry me)

The administration has done a horrendous job of hiring coaches, it's not the programs ceiling it's the program being limited by an administration with it's head up it's collective arse.  Mike Davis couldn't coach his way out of a paper bag, Crean's an improvement over that but for as many times as it looks like he's figuring it out there are as many that looks like he's utterly clueless.  Samsung, well I was fine with him having a second chance but I wanted that second chance to happen somewhere else.

That's a really cool page, I didn't realize ESPN had that on its site. Thanks for sharing it!

It would be a very welcome change to see our team consistently playing great defense. On the offensive side I'd like a coach who can create an offense that isn't reliant on us shooting lights out from 3 to function. Maybe a guy who uses post players well. We've gotten some good ones here recently but they seem to be underutilized a lot of the time.

Virginia's offense isn't that far off from ours... their defense is light years better. The lack of postseason success scares me more than pace of play.

Anyone wanna explain why Crean doesn't ever implement some kind of press to create turnovers and get some easy buckets?  I mean we always say we have athleticism and length.   Is it that he just has no clue how to teach it or what?  Love to hear some opinions.

Great question. He's states he wants to bring fatigue to the game with pace but then sits back on defense. I would imagine OG would have been great out top of a 1-3-1 or 1-2-2 zone press. My guess is he doesn't take the time to implement it because they're working on offense. In general, he doesn't seem to teach defense that well.

Running into izzo couple years in a row didn't help Bennett out. Last year they were the better team against Syracuse for 30 min and decided to forget how to play basketball for 10 mins. Post season success doesn't scare me as much since great coaches seem to figure out how to get over the hump eventually and imo he is a great coach. I remember a time where jay wright was getting hammered for getting a great seed and losing early. ( I'm guilty anytime I saw Villanova a 1 or 2 seed I had them bounced in the second round. He got over the hump last year. Im bullish on Bennett maybe it's because I haven't got to cheer for a great defensive team in a long time (Cody sophomore year was closest to be great) and Virginias D is defense porn.
