TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

Dan D said coach Crean may win coach of the year.

He may be right. I will say this, I'd say this is his best year of coaching and adjustments that I've seen from him. Even when we were number 1, I didn't see all that much of greatness from him.

Still want him gone, but things appear interesting. Need to see some road wins vs actual basketball teams.

After what we've seen so far this year, wanting Crean gone just doesn't make sense anymore. There aren't any solid options readily available, as far as we know, and he's demonstrating a lot of improvement as a coach.

I think the only fair determination of his coaching after the season we've seen thus far, is that we all want to see more. We need to see him close out the season strong, win the B1G Title, perform well in the B1G Tournament for once, and at least make another Sweet Sixteen. If he does all of that, there is no question that he should continue coaching at Indiana. If he fails to accomplish any of the above points, it's time for Indiana to seriously shop around for other coaches, but depending on who is available, it may not be time to move on from Crean.

At this point, I don't think there is a situation where Crean isn't making goofy faces and running one of the top offenses in the country Indiana next year.

Use your imagination! I could see him being gone if Purdue was our last win for the season.

I like the positive direction this post is moving in, though, we should probably move the line-up discussion into its own post or join it with an existing similar post since it was a good discussion that may be lost in this thread.

I'm so torn by this whole topic at the moment. On the one hand, I love how the team is playing, I think they're being coached well and they're playing within the realm of their potential for the first time in a long time. On the other hand, I can't help but feel like being happy a team isn't playing below my minimum expectations is a sign that the coaching fit is wrong. I shouldn't have to be so excited we handled Purdue or Iowa the way we were supposed to at home, it should just be a state of being. I should expect more.

Tom Crean can win my support for next year if he finishes out this year with some consistency. If we lose in the BTT or the Tourney, I want to lose because we played our best and someone played better. I want us to have had the talent, the passion, and the coaching, but just have it not be enough to overcome a superior team. I can accept that kind of loss. I just cannot deal with inconsistency anymore. I can't watch games wondering what team is going to show up, I can't watch recruiting wonder who will be their coach, I just can't handle that for another season.

I'm a defender of Glass, but even I realize there is no way Crean is gone at the end of the year short of losing in the first weekend. Even then, second game might still endear him with a good showing in the BTT and a title. Let's all hope the decision becomes clear during the next year so we can just get off this crazy train one way or another. If Crean is having his career changing season, then great, I'm glad we already have him. If he's having a peak season ready to be sandwiched with more mediocrity, then no thanks, who else is available?

If I could I would like this post about X1000. Boy does this speak to the frustration moving forward in this saga. We are all ready for the answer.

Don't the Big Ten coaches vote on coach of the year? Crean didn't get it either year we had Zeller. In 2012, Izzo won it because his team shared the title. In 2013, Bo won it because his team "exceeded expectations." Crean isn't a very popular guy in this league; just ask Matta, Miles or Painter. If Wisconsin finishes in the top 5, Gard will probably win it.

Agree with this.  Gard if the finish top 4 to carry on the Bo legacy.  Fran if they win/share a B1G regular
season championship or pick a coach otherwise.  There are 4-5 coaches in the B1G that won't vote for Crean no matta what.

I thought the Michigan game would've had a Pavlov's dog effect on the TO's. Do reporters ever ask him about why he doesn't call TOs to stop momentum swings?

None of the reporters have the balls to ask anything with meaning.

This team is 22-6. At the end of the day you have to give the coach some props, regardless of the head scratching moments during the season. Results were demanded and 22-6 is the result he and the team have produced so far.

We should be ecstatic with that record but many of us get too wrapped up with our dislike of Crean. I'm guilty of it. 22-6. That's a d*mn good year so far. Imagine if we would've take care of business at PSU.

With 1/3 of those losses on that horrible island of Maui!!  Two more losses that we were in the game; a TB made dunk in the first half off a great take might have won it in regulation and having a pulse at PSU.  A lot of what ifs but we are where we are and credit is due.  I definitely didn't see this after making very little effort on defense in the non-con season.  Need to finish strong though!

I agree with you about most of everything in this post. Crean will most likely be back unless we somehow lose every game for the rest of the season and post season.

crazy to think that our seed is going to suffer from the trip to Maui. The 3 games we played in Maui the teams rpi's are(126, 135, and 216) heck we could of stayed home and played 3 more games at the hall against cupcakes and be 24-4 today and in the conversation of a top 3 seed. But maybe we needed the wake up calls in Maui to get to where we are now. Like u said 4 of our 6 losses were by 5 points or less

Agree with this 100%

Another thing that I and I would guess a lot of the fan base is desperately asking for is to be thought of as "dangerous" in March. We can't expect to be a 1 seed or in the top AP top 5 every single season but for instance, if we are seeded somewhere in the 4-9 range, having the confidence that the team can make a run in March or at least be a team that everyone is worried about in the tourney. I do believe IU should be making elite 8/final four runs rather often but getting a reputation as being a tough out in March (as I'm sure Knight's teams were) even in "down" years is much better than being forever-worried when March rolls around regardless of seed.

It would take Crean several years to turn that around but would help all us quickly forget the negative thoughts we have late in the season. As I try to tell people that aren't IU fans, we as IU fans will all judge success by what happens in March and until the relevancy in March returns, we'll want a coaching change. This year means so, so much in that regard. It will be very interesting to watch it all transpire and the fallout whether things go well or not.

Knight 's teams were not always tough in march, I might be showing my age here, but off the top of my head I can remember a few early exits from the NCAA'S. Richmond, Cleveland State,Pepperdine, and Kent State stick out in my mind. BUT,when you put 3 national title banners up,I guess you can have bad loses and it's not that big of a deal.

Right but my point is that I'm sure teams were worried about playing Knight IU teams. I wasn't following IU when he was around but it was an assumption since historically he was great in March. These days, we don't know what to expect even game to game and given the past few years, have a relatively low confidence level heading into March.

I expect a final four this year. Anything short of this and Coach Crean should be fired. We're supposed to try to be a national championship contender. It's been 9 years, how idiotic do u have to be to tolerate this? He's already a multimillionaire thanks to us, believe he's not hard pressed for cash. This should be the final year to get results.
Otherwise we risk a generation of iu fans not having a real clue what real winning feels like.
