@ZachOsterman: Tom Crean terms Bielfeldt's performance a triple-double because he also had 11 deflections. #iubb

Gotta love those deflections!

Yep. Where would this team be with out the "deflections" stat? I think the team also found about 15 snipes.

Deflections are actually a very important stat. The problem is the team allows too much dribble penetration without proper helpside. I would say that was actually better today. I would not highlight deflections when the overall defensive product stinks, but it's important all the same.

Crean's teams have no concept of valuing the ball nor any defense at all. I watched Hoosiers again last night, and I swear Gene Hackman could out coach Crean. Watching Hickory play defense made me feel better knowing Indiana basketball was once known for this. The one area of basketball that wins championships is the reason Crean wins very little at all. His 8 year B1G record now sits at a paltry 50-77(.394). That's a 7 win average and at this rate, even a Glass half filled lifetime contract wouldn't get him back to .500.

He's .569 in all years excluding the first 3......................... Still bad.

He's .516 in all years excluding the first 3 and Cody Zeller........................  This is also bad

I agree. Good point!

Yes bad, but impossible to get back to .500 on a lifetime contract? Give me a break. That's the stuff that's starting to make some sound like Crean.

But with the way this team plays defense, it seems that deflections are rewarded over sound positioning and rotation.

It's similar to the 'home run' philosophy on offense where turnovers seem to be a given with trying to get a layup or three within 5 seconds.

And that is the problem with Crean. His defense is similar to his offense in that he wants to hit that Homerun. He doesn't want the boring mid range game because statistically it isn't the right play. Same as statistically the more deflections you get the better chance you have to win. Problem with both is you have to have basic fundamentals at both end we don't have. That's on him.

Coach Crean record at this point is not why I want him gone. I respect coach. I just don't like the product on the court. I don't like bad fundamental basketball. What Coach says or doesn't say at his post game presser is not the issue. He's trying to save his job and I hate to watch it, but I want a change. I would prefer to do it without bashing the guy who came here when a lot of coaches ran the other way.

You hold a noble position. The results are much like a bad relationship between two people. One side desperately wants change to happen in order to carry on with he other side but the one side never changes and over extends their welcome. The byproduct is an outward expression of anger and resentment. I'm guilty, as are many Hoosier fans. I, like you, really just wish he would move on as soon as possible. Having gotten rid of him will be like releasing the pressure valve on a pressure cooker. All parties will benefit and feel a tremendous weight lifted.

Speaking of Glass.....

True but would our department pay his $2+ million over 5 years and say $3.5 million for our next coach at the same time? I also don't think he sits on the sidelines, but you have to plan on paying for it until it is certain you are not.

It's only $1.75 a year if fired before July 1. If he makes $1 mil a year at his next stop, IU pays him $750,000 a year. Glass has already said in the past a buyout won't keep him in a job.

I was just adding some more realistic data to the mix. I was trying to debunk his claim while simultaneously agreeing that Crean's B1G record is less than satisfactory. Hence why I posted two averages that were both above .500.

Maybe he would want to sit a year after how things have went down here?

One thing I forgot so I'm adding it now.  He can't just sit on the sidelines, it's in his contract he has to make an effort to get another job.  If he just sat on the sidelines he could be in breach and we may not have to pay any buyout.

A part of me wants to say this team might be better if he just sat on the sidelines, but that's neither here nor there.

With how buyouts are worded I am sure there is verbiage of looking within Power 5. Look at how long Howland was out. He went to Final Fours. We can't just say a decent job will be waiting.

Edit: it's kind of like people on unemployment. If it's not benefiting them they can look in unrealistic spots.

yep - they should be used to determine how active your team is on the ball line and should not be used in pressers.

Give me a player who plays solid defense and keeps his man in front of him to force contested jumpers over a player with double digit deflections.  Currently, we are a team who tries to deflect a pass that pulls us out of position and we give up uncontested layups.  It's a philosophy as much execution thing.  I believe we got away with it in the Cody years because we had sound position defenders and Oladipo..
