TOM CREAN FIRED

Recommended Posts

A name that isn't in the college ranks but who is a good coach and wanted to coach college is Mark Jackson. He did well developing a young Golden State team. Recruiting would be a question and he would need sound assistants to help with that. Just a thought.

what was hilarious was you liking your own post a few posts ago lol. 1 seed isn't terribly hard to accomplish finishing as one is which we missed by a long shot. Keep the faith for this year I am to but I am at a 1 out of a 100 that it will happen

Damn... Brought the HEAT on that one.

Curious.... When did he make it public that he wanted to coach college?

He would recruit very well but my concern is that he would run an NBA style offense. As we've seen with Crean and we see with each Calipari coached team, this doesn't work in the college game unless you've got NBA talent across the board. That's just too much pressure to have to recruit at that level every year. I'd take a Brad Stevens/Bo Ryan type of coach with Indiana resources over an NBA guy who hasn't coached successfully at a college program.

Who's to say Glass doesn't extend him again?

Edit: I know not likely.. But Glass hasn't wavered in his support for Crean either.

Glass cannot be as stupid as he's made himself look. He HAS to have a guy picked and have insider knowledge about the timing of making a move. I just cannot fathom another scenario. The guy just isn't as dumb as we all think he is.........Then again, he is the one who inked Crean to that blasphemous extension.

Yeah, keep wondering that myself. Glass is going to publicly support CTC right up to the point that he publicly doesn't(fired or asked to resign). Think we had the discussion last spring about even if he thinks its time for CTC to go, the real possibility exists that he sticks with CTC as a matter of timing and availability of the right replacement. Otherwise than the large extension with the large buyout, I've never figured out what the big beef with Glass is. I think many of the calls for Glass's head are just results of the fire CTC crowd who haven't seen it happen as quick as they want it too.

I think you're probably right. I mean, I don't entirely understand what people want. Short of firing him immediately which is extremely unlikely unless he has someone lined up, he has to support him publicly. You cannot have the AD saying he doesn't support the current coach.

"Hey, I'm waiting to do anything until Brad calls but isn't this guy a douche?"

That just doesn't happen from a business standpoint. I like how passionate fans get, but I'm not sure everyone thinks of the business side. This is a high-value long-term employment contract for a limited skilled position. There are serious considerations for everyone involved.

Highest paid public employee in the state.

I don't really see any upside to keeping Crean.  I know people will say you can't fire him midseason, but why not.  Get somebody in here who can teach these kids some basic fundamentals.  That way the ones who stay are better prepped for the person we get to replace Crean.

A halfway decent coach might even be able to do something with this roster.

Plus this gives us more time to assemble a search committee

What halfway decent coach do we snag in November?

Are we just giving up on having any recruits next year then?

Firing without a replacement plan is not a good move for the program. We don't need another long search committee, we need a deal brokered between the next coach and the current coach before announcements are made. This gives recruits an opportunity to see who they are going to play for. That could be the difference between a cluster bomb and a smooth transition.

For the love of all that is good, no more search committees.

Oooooh, I love committees.  First of all let's start with an unwieldy number of people who clearly dislike each other.  Then let's pick people who are so geographically far apart that getting them together to meet is a near impossibility.  Finally, don't give them any deadline.      And always remember a camel is nothing more than a horse designed by a committee.   If Fred Glass doesn't have a head coach prospect list for every IU sport he's not doing his job.

Whoever the interim will be is most likely already sitting on the bench. Maybe they will be better at teaching fundamentals, maybe not. What absolutely does not need to happen is to just fire CTC just to get it done. Have a plan in place and work it.  If it means CTC coaches the rest of the season so be it, an interim is unlikely to do any better. Putting the right coach in place is the priority.

I agree with this. I will say this, even though I think a change needs to happen, I strongly disapprove of one happening before season's end. I doubt any noticeable change would be seen. Heck we might even get worse if guys felt like the admin had given up on the season so they were just going get theirs to get ready for the pros. A mid season move is a crap shoot. Now if things completely fall apart, I might change my tune.

If we're going to make a move then do it right.

If we make a midseason move it is about more than some hope to get better this year. Remember the fans booing at s few games last year? Imagine that starts to become regular. Imagine Glass saying things publicly like he has Toms back and what that will do to a fan base that had turned.

The midseason move is not about getting more wins in the short term but it would be about decreasing the pressure on the IU ball program and players.

Id rather the stands be empty this year than have the fans boo. It's such an embarrassing thing to watch.
