5 on 5 was super sloppy. They were playing extra fast. Trying to impress the cameras. Also they were playing stingy D and getting their hands in on the dribble a lot as the refs didn't call the reach ins.

I do think we will suffer from a lot of TOs. I think that is part of Creans offense by trying to push the pace so much. I hope and expect the players to figure it out.

OG looked phenomal. On a whole different level. JB was gunning all practice. Wasn't hitting at the rate I'd hope. Glad he looked healthy.
Cujo has a nice stroke and nice leaping ability. Devonte was hitting a bunch of shots all practice long. TB was missing some bunnies. Might of been fatigue.

Overall, we have potential to be really good. Crean really likes this group.

I'm so excited to watch OG this year.  I don't think he missed a shot the entire practice.

I watched this a few times already. Kept a close eye on all his 3pt shots. Could think of only 2 shots that didn't go in. Think maybe he's put in work in the offseason? Gelon does have a nice stroke but everything else needs work

CuJo does have a nice stroke as mentioned above. I think he will really help out.
Devonte, I think we will be pleasantly surprised and look forward to see this kids development grow.
De'Ron, man he is slow. Wasn't impressed in the least! Maybe my expectation was set too high with the player ranking. Always thought in YouTube clips that he looked a lil slow.
Newkirk, looks ready to take on a leadership role to me. This kid is quick and can jump

I loved the intensity of the practice and that the staff accounts for every minute. Sloppy throughout but not surprising considering how early it is in the process.

I just rewatched the practice.  One name that really stood out to me that hasn't been mentioned yet is RoJo.  He looked really good.

I also agree with some above that said Davis wasn't quick or smooth, but there's a reason nobody has mentioned Thomas Bryant yet.  Davis did a great job defending him.  I'll take his defensive abilities over quickness all day.  He appears to be as big as TB too

Well said about Davis defending TB. At one point, TB went face and got his shot thrown back the other way by Davis. I believe the Frosh will be a big help on the defensive end. Crean has mentioned he needs to get back in shape and will play himself back to form. I wouldn't put much stock in his slowness just yet.

Just now watching the practice.. at 1 point Crean talking about all I McDs players in his time playing in NBA and couldn't remember the 3rd name... I couldn't either on the spot thinking about it.. but it definitely shows the difference between the IU guys and the guys that played at IU.

Whole season was forgettable. It was such an anomaly it didn't even look like a tom Crean coached team. 

I still wonder if Remy Abell hadn't gotten kicked off the team could we have been more respectable

 2016-2017 Player Profile: Grant Gelon

The least heralded of Indiana’s 2016 recruiting class, Crown Point guard Grant Gelon arrives in Bloomington with a reputation as an elite shooter.  As a senior in high school, Gelon averaged 14.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game and shot nearly 39 percent on 3s. He was named an Indiana All-Star.

“Nobody has worked harder at perfecting that craft than Grant has,” Clint Swan, Gelon’s high school coach, told Inside the Hall over the summer. “He’s worked very hard at making himself into a better shooter and not just relied on his gift as a shooter alone.”

The key for Gelon will be to develop a more well rounded game that allows him to be a significant contributor at the Big Ten level.

At 6-foot-5 and 195 pounds, Gelon has excellent size for a guard. His shooting ability is Big Ten ready, but the rest of his game has room to grow. Indiana’s guard depth should allow Gelon to be brought along at a slower pace and grow into a role.

“Compare that to Spike Albrecht (also of Crown Point) when he went to Michigan, they had two point guards,” Swan said this summer. “They had Trey Burke and Spike Albrecht. He was going to have to play and that kind of scared me a little bit. I thought that was sort of alarming that he was going to be called upon to play immediately. I think Grant is going to be able to get acclimated in summer workouts and practices and fall workouts. He’s going to be able to see how those guys carry themselves and see how they play. He’ll be able to bring himself along at a comfortable pace.”

The Indiana coaching staff has a proven track record of developing shooters into solid rotation players.

The most recent example is Nick Zeisloft, who arrived in Bloomington as an Illinois State graduate transfer. Zeisloft’s addition was met with plenty of skepticism from fans, but he is now in training camp with the Pacers and headed for the Fort Wayne Mad Ants of the NBA Development League.

If Gelon is going to follow a similar path, he’s going to need to maximize every opportunity to learn from his teammates and the coaching staff.

“I think he can sit and watch and glean from the players that they have there right now and can pick up on not just how to play, but how to carry yourself,” Swan said. “He can learn on a day-to-day basis what the expectations are. I think that’s going to help him immensely.”

Bottom Line: As the lone in-state recruit in IU’s 2016 recruiting class, Gelon has plenty to prove. He wasn’t impressive in the Indiana All-Star series over the summer and had some games at Crown Point as a senior where he didn’t stand out. However, the coaching staff remains high on his long term potential and he’ll have the opportunity to ease into a role early in his career.

Quotable: “It’s not something he’s taking for granted. He knows there’s a huge responsibility that comes with it. That’s why he’s continued to work extremely hard since our season ended. He’s done everything he could to get himself ready for these summer workouts that he’s going through right now in Bloomington. It’s a badge of honor for him. He’s excited about it. 2016-2017 Player Profile: Devonte Green

Devonte Green has some big shoes to fill.

The younger brother of San Antonio Spurs guard Danny Green, the 6-foot-3 combo guard will be following in the footsteps of Yogi Ferrell and Isiah Thomas, donning the number 11 while at Indiana.

Green, who has been playing varsity basketball since seventh grade, received offers from nearly 15 schools, including Arizona and Texas, before deciding on committing to

As a senior at Long Island Lutheran, Green was one of four finalists for Mr. Basketball New York. Green led the team in scoring, putting up more than 20 points a game.

“[Devonte]’s just a tremendous athlete and he had a couple of games where he rattled off seven or eight 3s for us,” Long Island Lutheran coach John Buck told Inside The Hall back in June. “He’s got that ability, he’s just got to keep the game very simple and stay very consistent.”

Green is known as a scoring guard but has developed an all-around game to match. He averaged 6.1 rebounds and 3.3 assists a game in his senior season while leading the Crusaders in steals and blocks.

“When he’s locked in defensively – and everyone talks about him offensively – but defensively was his greatest asset for us,” Buck said. “He’s really, really good on the ball. He plays very hard. He has the ability to do so many different things just looking at his stat line.”

In fact, Crean said at media day last week that Green was second on the team in deflections through the first 10 or 11 practices.

How much playing time Green receives his freshman year remains uncertain. The backcourt is already stacked with upperclassmen James Blackmon, Robert Johnson, and Josh Newkirk, as well as incoming top 60 guard Curtis Jones.

It will be vital for Green to make the most of his early season minutes if he wants to be a significant part of the rotation once conference play comes around.

Quotable: “Devonte just kept getting better and better. He’s exactly what we want the program to be about, improvement. It’s not just improving when you get to Indiana, it’s the improvement you make before that. Devonte was one of those people, as we watched, I wanted to like him, I did like him. But I needed to see more, and by the time we offered him a scholarship, I’d seen plenty and I don’t think we’re even close to seeing how much we’re going to see.” – Tom Crean speaking to the media in June.

Indiana back in January. Green said the biggest factors in his decision were his relationship with the coach and the style of play.
