Would be brutal. At Georgia, At Texas about as tough a draw we could get if it holds.

My gut says that the winners of conference championships might move up slightly if they win while the losers move down a little if they lose.....but will not be removed from the CFP even with a loss.

The #1 seed could be Oregon, Texas, or Penn State.  If Oregon wins they are the 1.  If Texas wins and Oregon loses, Texas is the 1.  If Penn State wins and Texas loses, Penn State is the 1.

I think if Penn State loses, they will flip spots with Notre Dame.

Georgia will be the 2 seed if they beat Texas.

If Iowa State beats Arizona State, that seems pretty simple -- ISU just takes ASU's spot.

But what if Clemson beats SMU? Clemson has to get in. I guess Alabama gets bumped in that case?

Correct.

I could see them just tossing SMU in favor of Bama. Especially if Clemson wins convincingly. It’s gross but you can’t tell me it isn’t possible.

I wouldn't say it's impossible but the committee has been saying that they aren't going to remove teams for losing conference championships.

They are the least worrisome of the 3 I mentioned. Would you be surprised to see IU bounced for Bama? Under the worst case scenario of 3 autos not in top 12 I could see it.

Indiana is at #9 in the rankings.  It is not possible for three auto bids to bounce them out of the tournament.  The reason that IU is seeded 11th is to allow the auto bids at #3 and #4.  The last auto bid is currently seeded 12.

The worst case scenario would be Clemson beating SMU and the committee not readjusting SMU's ranking which is one ahead of IU.  But in that scenario, IU would just move from 11 to 12.  It is not possible for the Big 12 or the Mountain West to steal an extra spot from IU because there is no current Big 12 or Mountain West team ranked ahead of IU.  Both the MWC and Big 12 will be one bid leagues.

I know all of that. My entire scenario hinged on the committee putting Alabama in over IU in said scenario. There is no reasoning for it other than "Bama".

I don’t think Alabama deserves the final spot, but the complaints from the Miami fans are rich. Sure, Alabama is ranked where it is because of the brand, but Miami was also over ranked because of its brand. They weren’t impressive all year. Now they have two losses on top of a 7 point win against Louisville, a 4 point win against Virginia Tech, and a 1 point win against Cal. IU, for example, has 11 wins, 10 of them by 14+ points, and we’re only a few spots ahead of Miami. Sorry Miami fans, but you just ran into a bigger brand in Alabama. Neither of you deserve the spot.

Two questions: (1) Is there any conceivable way that IU could host a playoff game? (I don't think so but wondered what permutations I may have missed that would result in something like that.) (2) What are the chances that IU will not play either Texas or Georgia? (If so, who else could they play?)

I’m 100% behind this as well, although no chance it will happen because of the money involved with those bowls who will demand the big revenue fan bases that travel in their games. But wouldn’t it be cool if one year we have a season similar to Illinois this year at 9-3 and got to go to the Rose Bowl? How much more would that mean to a team than it will for a UGA/Bama/Tx/OSU, etc. who treat it as a stepping stone to the semifinals? Also, I went to Jacksonville for our trip to the Gator Bowl in 2020, and the week leading up to the game was packed with things for the team and events that celebrated their season. As much as the playoffs are going to mean a lot, missing that bowl game experience for teams who don’t host the game is a loss. It’s just going to feel like a road game at some point even if it’s a big time game obviously.

I think it would be cool. Just because a team misses the playoffs doesn't mean it was a bad season. This way the next 12 teams get to play in a very good bowl. Even in the CFP era I still enjoyed watching NY6 bowls evern tho some players sat out. Unless IU is ever playing in them I'll probably never watch any of the other bowl games. Just like I have zero interest in the NIT..

Basically it would be 1) College Football playoff; 2) NY6 Bowls; 3) Any other bowls.

Will the Rose Bowl be the semifinal every year? I can't see them ever moving it away from January 1st at 5:00...

I can't see them playing Georgia as they will either move up or down. I don't see a home game unless Penn State and Georgia lose in a blowout fashion. Might need SMU to lose just so we jump them in the overall rankings.
