Who's Gonna Fill Yogi's Shoes???

Recommended Posts

You only consider me to be "trolling" because you disagree with me. When nothing I said is trolling, out of line, off topic, attacking anyone or out of possibility towards the question. Just because someone isn't joyful and being "homer" doesn't make them a troll. But you can consider me one if you'd like. It does not bother me.

Honestly the comment that I quoted really don't disagree with nobody is going to be half as talented as Yogi like, you said. It just seems to me every time you posted the last month or so someone pissed in your Wheaties. I'm no homer but proud of what this team has so far accomplished and hoping for the best the rest of the season. I'm excited and Go Hoosiers!

If Crean tries to duplicate this season's best style of play with next season's team, he will fail miserably.  Yogi isn't someone you replace because of his lateral quickness and skills in the open floor.  Newkirk's good.  Very good.  But he's not as quick as Yogi is.  He's a better defender, he's not a shooter, so we'll lose something there, even if Yogi's only average; but he's got a pretty solid A/TO ratio in his brief career.  This year will make him better, and he'll have every opportunity to be the point guard.

Blackmon and Johnson will do some ball handling, also.

Blackmon is gonna drive me nutty next year. I can already feel it coming.

Yep.. Blackmon is no where near the driver or finisher. Blackmon is literally a rich man's ziesloft in my opinion. More 3s on the move. Same defense. More athletic. He is going to fill it up point wise but I'd honestly run him as a killer 6th man at this point.

On the other hand, maybe a season of him sitting and watching will be fruitful for the team next year.

I haven't been impressed with Grant Gelon until tonight when I saw him in person. Maybe he can be a good go-to guy during the game for some scoring minutes. I saw him score 20 points tonight. He has one of the quickest releases I've ever seen. Maybe Crean knew what he was doing.

Yogi has evolved a great deal during his senior season.
The light has turned on and he now has that quality of being able to "will" the team to win on both the offensive and defensive ends of the floor. Having "the guy" that can put a team on his shoulders, without doing too much, and driving others to do well is a talent not a lot of players have.
Instead of just "playing" the game you now really get a sense that he wants to make sure we do all we can to win.
His replacement, whomever that might be, might score as much (I doubt it) but it will still probably not mean as much as what Yogi brings NOW, after 3 1/2 seasons, to the team. It is fun to watch.

While we won't have our experienced yogi running the point, we will have newkirk and rojo. Niego and Troy may even be here next year to run it. Last resort we have two freshmen, cujo and Devonte who I could see getting some time.

Honestly I think the best fit to go with Newkirk will be fine.  He needs to be Verdell Jones not Yogi.

Gonna either need Rojo to step up and score some more or going to need Blackmon to play defense tough.  So at this point I would prefer a back court of Rojo and Newkirk and then JBJ can come in when we need another shooter.

At this point, with me anyway, Crean has earned the benefit of the doubt in his ability to identify talent.

Oladipo, Hulls, Holt, O.G., Juwan.  Sure we've missed on guys too, but even the great coaches have too.

Don't forget Hartman, Zeisloft, and I'll even include Devin Davis who appeared to really be coming into his own preseason before the accident. Man, I really think that kid could have been a huge piece of IU basketball over his career.

I think Newkirk and Rob will pick up the slack for ball handling and Blackmon Jr will pick up the slack for scoring. Somebody compared him to a "rich-man's" Zeisloft. Thats ridiculous. Zeisloft only shoots 3s wheres Blackman Jr can drive and penetrate, has a midrange game, etc. Can he do those things like Yogi? No, but not many people can

Yeah I think we are way too hard on Blackmon around here. Offensively he is incredible. Other than them both being great shooters Blackmon and Zeisloft do not compare. I love Z but Blackmon is on a different level.
