(2018) SG Romeo Langford - INDIANA HOOSIERS

Recommended Posts

Well... Crean would recruit the long sh!t out of Indiana if he was shooting for two star and low three star Indiana hs kids.

It's those darn high four star and five star Indiana hs kids that seem to think they can go anywhere in the country.

IT'S THE INTERWEB AND CABLE TV THAT'S BEEN THE RUIN OF US I TELLS YA!! (except of course, for Cody, Yogi, Hollowell, and Swanigan, who obviously didn't have internet access and therefore stayed in state)

Where does JBJ fall into this? He had internet access but chose to ignore it?

They have the whole Wake Forest football scandal to throw the NCAA off. UL won't be punished anymore for hooker gate. It's the way the NCAA operates..

Not ironically, is it any surprise AT ALL the UL is involved in this WF scandal as well?

Dolla Dolla bills, ya'll!

Do you think getting rid of the "everyone gets a trophy" class basketball in Indiana would improve the aura?

4 teams get a trophy. Because there's 4 classes.

Is this an indicator of a bigger issue with where the IUBB program is, or am I just looking too deep into it?

The program isn't in awesome shape, but finishing last year the way we did with a B1G title and this year being ranked in the top 10 and the wins over UNC & KU and likely a strong shot at another B1G title seem to be in the top 10-15 schools out there. The recruiting angle in Indiana isn't Crean. People need to remember most these high star kids don't care about being close to home anymore. It doesn't have the same appeal it used to and kids want to experience something new. IMO it drawz them away from us then it would towards us. Hence why most of our high star kids have been from other states. As fans we need to see this and get it and stop acting like he has to recruit Indiana. I agree he needs to try, but if it isn't worth the time, then don't waste the effort. I find one common thing IU lacks is that they don't go after "friends". The best recruiting classes always have a couple kids that have played together at some point or something along those lines. We never seem to have guys like that in one class.

We had that in our 2012 class with guys like Yogi, Patterson, Hollowell, etc that played together. That didn't workout too well. I believe one of the recruiting "experts" shot down the "package deal" theory a few years ago.

I think it's more than that. I think it might be Crean reacting to things that have happened in the recent past.

Example:

2012 and 2013 classes were full of recruits with questionable characters. He's now put an emphasis on high character kids.

2013-2014 we lacked shooters. He's not put an emphasis on getting shooters.

Recruiting is constantly evolving to mold your program the best way you see to win and stay out of trouble. It's not limited to IU. I'm not sure exactly why he's struck out with many top level players the last few years. As fleek posted in a different thread; can Crean continue to find, develop, and win with underrated recruits?

Add in the loss of Kenny Johnson as a recruiter and you provided an excellent summary of why Crean's recruiting in 2016 is different from even as recent as 2012-2014. The loss of Johnson is a major reason we've struck out on major recruits IMO. Go figures, from what I've read Johnson has developed a strong relationship with Langford.

If you've never had a chance to watch Langford play, tonight's your night.  Langford and his New Albany Bulldogs take on nationally ranked Laporte LaLumiere which features a number of former IU recruiting targets.  Tweets have indicated the game will be televised on ESPN2 at 7:00 ET; however, my Comcast channel guide has it being carried on both ESPN and ESPN2.

Not sure that is a bad thing. Our worst years were during that time. I would rather have wins than higher ranked classes.

That's not really fair the team we currently have was built with kids recruited during that time. Whether or not they committed that time.

I think our staff has started to take notice of this a little more... Curtis Jones played with TB on the AAU circuit right? and also new Rob Johnson.... I think with how national recruiting is now you can pretty much find links within any high/mid rated group of players though. They also have to be the right fit for the team.... Character, Team needs, etc...

However I don't know of any connections between Romeo and any of our current roster nor future recruits....?

From watching them take on North Central, I think this game will get ugly. NA just can't matchup, with Langford being their tallest player.

I don't think losing Kenny Johnson is bad as it appears though. We recruited some questionable characters that didn't mesh while he was recruiting for IU. Chuck was supposed to be that big time recruiter that would land major recruits.

The question always go back to what fleek said though. Can we win at a high enough level by landing some top 50 recruits and underrated/under recruited players? If we only land a top 50 recruit and "diamonds in the rough" but continuously compete for a B1G title and past the Sweet 16 I'll be perfectly happy.

Your correct I consider that a pipeline though. Curtis probably thought TB was a goner at some points last year, but recruiting isn't based on just relationships of the kids. It is also about the relationships Crean builds w HS coaches and assistants. Kenny was a loss but I don't think that has anything to do with it. When 25 kids get selected to these all star games or other events we have maybe 1 guy were solid with, while other schools have multiple kids. They all talk about their schools to each other. My solution is to go after 3-4 big recruits and see how it goes, but aim our focus on High 4 star to 75-80 ranked kids. With Crean's development it makes too much sense.
