(2018) SG Romeo Langford - INDIANA HOOSIERS

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Romeo or anyone in his camp are looking for a payout. I'm saying that it's difficult to recruit the top 20ish players in the country because a lot aren't on the up and up.

From things I've read online and have heard from people in the area Romeo is a good young man that does right.

These random schools have landed top tier talent for several reasons, and I can tell you why.. Washington landed Michael Porter because his father is an assistant coach. Shammond Williams, the former UNC standout, is now an assistant coach at WKU and uncle of Mitchell Robinson who is the top 10 center who signed there. Those kind of relationships are the "more to it" part you mentioned. And as far as Alford is concerned.. Maybe he just isn't a very good coach? 

I stand by my argument that Indiana won't win the recruiting battle for the reasons I already mentioned. 

 

This doesn't explain Markelle Fultz and the other lotto picks in years past. I do agree that we are no longer a prime destination for the elite of the elite. I can't say for certain why that's the case. My personal opinion is that it has to do with the allure of playing for a particular coach. Tom Crean is a good coach and an elite developer of individual skill. He is not an elite winner though. Hard to expect a kid with every option to pick Tom Crean over Tom Izzo, Coach K, Bill Self, Roy Williams, Rick Pitino and John Calipari.

Could virtually say the same things about James Blackmon in HS too. You may turn out to be correct and likely will but his size doesn't make it as obvious as say, Ben Simmons or Michael Porter, or Jahlil Okafor.

He is clearly a special talent and I don't think he's overrated at all but he has to continue to prove it more than a 6'8" plus guy who will get a bigger benefit of the doubt ( Skal Labissiere, Cliff Alexander, etc, etc)

I disagree with you this time Fleek. His size is a non issue bc it's very clear what position he's projecting to play and he's already a prototypical 2 guard. He's extremely polished offensively. Can score at all levels. Is a plus defender. Is a great rebounder for his position as well. He's a one and done IMO. If he continues maturing physically, he's a top 5 pick.

Blackmon was a great high school player but had obvious holes in his game. Not to mention he was never a big winner in HS. Romeo has zero noticeable flaws and is dominating 4a competition in Indiana (as a soph). He's the real deal.

Last measurements I saw listed him at 6'6. So he has the size of an NBA 2. He's more of a freak athlete than JBJ was and is much more of a complete player, rather than just a scorer. There's a reason he's top 5 in the country, as compared to JBJ being in the 20-25 range.

It is possible that he's not a 1 and done, but that would be bc of his choice to stay, not because he wouldn't be drafted.

Can't argue. My point was general. Guards as 1 n done are much more rare than bigs for obvious reasons.

I'm in no means knocking Romeo just thinking of other highly rated guards that don't go 1ndone as expected. The Harrison's come to mind.

I'm confused the Harrison were top recruits that are 6'6 and won Mr. Basketball I thought it was a fair comparison especially if Langford doesn't pan out. However I do think he's the real deal.

Yeah, this area is a melting pot of IU, UL, and puke. There's also a smattering of Xavier, Cincinnati, Dook, and other schools.

I went to Scribner before transferring midway through my freshman year. I played in the band, percussion, at basketball game for several years. I was there when they were runner ups at state.

Check the Harrison's history. It was a nearly perfect comparison to prove that guards don't get drafted on potential like BIGS do. The Harrisons were both top 5 recruits, same size or taller from a basketball hotbed. Not sure how that doesn't equate.

That is my point, after all. I AM NOT saying he is the next Harrisons. My point again, is it is harder to be 1 n done from the guard position because performance trumps potential.
