Indiana v. Iowa - Game thread - Feb. 11, 2100 EST on ESPN

I thought I read somewhere that the Big Ten used to do 9:30 tip-offs but did away with them because Knight was such a big critic.

I believe we played horrible on one of those late games and Knight said we would never play another past 7:30 because of how late we got back, etc... And he never played another 9PM or later game while he was still here.

All your scenarios has us winning @ least 1 in the dance, which is better thn last year. Tom Crean gets an extension and becomes the highest paid coach in CB. Glass saying "we have to lock him down". You can hear crickets in Assembly Hall during games because the fans have had enough. Bobby Knight comes back and says this is what you get for firing me.

I am pretty sure he probably thought that during the Davis tenure minus the one run.

No No No, this is what will probably happen.

IU loses tomorrow in a hard fought battle for the most part. However, due to turnovers, missed shots, and Byrant on foul trouble, we end up losing.

Then on Sunday, we head up to MSU where we get embarrassed and Izzo makes Crean look like the head coach for a local YMCA

However, many IU fans still see hope somehow and continue to support Crean. In the long run, we end up winning a game vs Maryland or Purdue and we do just enough to make the dance.

We get the 9 seed in the dance and we lose in OT. IU fans seem happy we made the dance and look forward to next year with the same old coach, with the same old results.

Or we win tomorrow and vs Nebraska which puts us at 11-7. Lose in the second round in the B1G. Get a 7 seed in the dance and end up losing to a mid major in the first round.

I wish it were March..

Might as well enjoy it as it lasts, but clearly as a fanbase we are tired of predictable mediocre to subpar seasons. This season may be better than norm but who knows we lost to UNLV, Wake, and Penn State. We nearly got blown out of gym by ND and the won. Idk how I feel about this year's team. The potential is there but we have looked pedestrian as much or more than we've looked quality.

Tomorrow isn't a huge measuring stick for me. We should win. Home court advantage is strong. The road games are the true tests.

Still and always rooting for a successful and memorable season. Let the chips fall where they may.

You're so right.

NOBODY WASTE YOUR TIME WATCHING THE GAME TOMORROW, JTREESH SAYS WE'RE GOING TO LOSE, AND THAT ASSEMBLY HALL WILL BURN DOWN IN A MASSIVE FIRE.

I hope the new arena has better sight lines and more seating.

Actually, I hope it has better sight lines, larger capacity, and the worst seats imaginable. Maybe hard aluminum benches without backs (except for some handicap seating). I want the decision to be "watch the game in misery" or "stand up" so standing up and cheering wins every time. Also, lets move everything closer in to the court. Oh, and put the band somewhere out of the way with a better acoustic profile so we can stop pumping in music and use solely band music (and open some seats up for students).

Anyone remember how football stadiums especially used to be in the late 80s/early 90s? You just built straight up, filled it with benches, and forced people to walk up a ton of stairs to their seats. You could cram 80,000 people in an area where we fit under 50,000 today. I could dig something like that, drawn out until it looks like the Quidditch World Cup.

A few things I'd like to see tonight...

- Play Uthoff tight on defense. Stay on him. We'll probably have to run all of Hartman, Williams, OG and Morgan on him throughout the game. None of them could shut him down alone, anyway. But do not let him get within 10-12 feet of the basket without bringing some help defense. Force him to give up the ball. Get it out of his hands. And start that at the beginning of the game. Don't let him get hot and then try and play "catch up" on defense against him the rest of the game. We tried guarding Hayes (Wisconsin) and Taylor (PSU) that way and it didn't work. And we lost. Help defense on Uthoff. All game. Which leads me to another point...

- Make the other guys beat us. Don't get me wrong, the other can definitely beat us. Particularly Jok. But Uthoff stirs the drink. Force Uhl to hit shots. Force Gesell to hit shots. Force Woodbury to settle for 12-15 foot jump shots. When Iowa lost to Maryland, Uthoff had a bad game. There's a correlation, there. Don't worry about giving Clemmons wide-open 3's. He's only a 32% shooter from out there, I'd roll the dice. Make guys like Baer, Ellingson and Wagner feel like they need to shoot the ball. Again, those three are not bad players at all. But for a big game on a big stage at Assembly Hall late in February... let's just say I don't know if they're ripe for a big game tonight.

- Limit turnovers. If we turn the ball over 14+ times tonight, we lose. Guarantee it.

- Need great play out of guys like Johnson, Zeisloft, Bielfeldt and Hartman. Particularly Hartman. We need him badly on both ends of the floor to make an impact in this one. And it wouldn't hurt if Johnson could regain some of his shooting prowess, either. But if 3/4 of those guys have a good game this evening, I'd say chances are very high that we come out with a W.

- Don't use this game as an NBA audition. Make the smart play. Make the right pass. Stay focused. Have confidence, but play within yourself.

Now watch... we'll hold Uthoff to single digits but lose by 20. And then I'll probably give up posting for awhile, haha!

As others have mentioned, it's so interesting that for as closely as we follow this team, we have no idea what will happen tonight. There is no scenario I wouldn't be surprised by even if we win by 20.

Purely based on pride, we need to protect our house and not get embarrassed. I may have to turn the game off to hide from the inevitable booing that will echo inside AH if we get pummeled.

It will come down to our defensive gameplan on Uthoff and TOs. Hopefully "keeping it simple" this week in practice has paid off.

Something to watch for too is our ability to get offensive boards. That could be a game changer and negate some bonehead TOs.

Oboards are definitely big, I agree they could make up for our TOs and we're considerably better than Iowa on that front.

So is defending Uthoff. Let's give him a couple of bad games to knock him off some people's POY lists.

On the offensive side, we have to play to our strengths. We play inside-out and need to keep playing that way. Three pointers open because defenses start to pack the middle to prevent our driving to the basket/passing inside to TB, we're not a three point first offense.

My unpopular opinion here is I really hope Troy is starting. I think OG has more upside, but I prefer him off the bench. I also think physiologically neither Troy or OG could handle it. Troy should be losing minutes to OG, but lacks the mental toughness to lose the starting spot and still play as Good Troy.

And anyone who is at the game you better be LOUD and make sure everyone around you is loud too. Download Crowdy or whatever, see if that helps. Anyone I see sitting better submit a doctor's note.

If Iowa comes in and plays sound perimeter defense, forcing us to play an interior game, we'll struggle, as we almost always do. We have one player, (Bryant) who can play, but his offensive arsenal is limited and his propensity for emotional instability can be costly in a game like this. I don't know how good Iowa's defense is, but they don't have to be world beaters; they just need to guard the perimeter, keeping us from going off with a barrage of threes. Speaking of defense, we'd better manufacture an "A" game, or it might not be pretty. Keeping the ball out of Williams' hands, (to the extent that he's not bringing it up the court) might be a good idea too.

Calm down

I'm just going off a pattern that we've seen for the past 4-5 years.

I firmly believe you have our offense completely backwards. We're the third most efficient offensive team from 2 and fifth from 3. Our ability to shoot 3s at such a high clip is dependent on our making room on the perimeter by being a threat inside. Compare the Michigan game and the PSU game. One game we relied on perimeter shooting and the other we relied on interior play until the 3 opened.

When properly utilized, Troy and TB are nigh unbeatable around the basket.

Quit confusing me with facts, damn you! lol. I just know that when I watch IU play on offense, they can go awfully flat for extended periods of time, particularly against the better teams. That's not unusual, as any good offensive team will struggle against a good defensive team, but with IU in particular, when their offense goes south, the whole game goes to hell in a hand-basket.
