2017 IUBB recruiting

Losing Kris Wilkes throws a wrench in things for sure. That absolutely is a big miss given the time spent on Kris. I mean, like years and years but time to move on.

So Beatty comes on Friday. I have to be honest, Beatty doesn't make sense to me. I talked to two guys who have seen him play and he is much more of a 2 than a 1. By my count, IU will have 4 players who fall into that category with a senior (Rojo), two soph (Cujo/Green) and an incoming freshman in Durham. Adding Beatty gives you 5 out of 13 spots for, essentially, two positions. I suppose all of the combos is not happenstance but rather strategic, I just don't know that I agree with it. I think you run into chemistry issues recruiting like this...

That said, I wouldn't be surprised if Beatty were to commit to IU. The narrative that he'll stay out East has some truth to it, but it isn't something IU couldn't overcome I'm told.

Tucker is a spring decision that IU will continue to recruit. He's not Kris Wilkes but he is a very good player. I do think if you look at a projected roster next year you'll realize an additional wing could be important. And a guy who can score on his own when they need it. Looking at that projected roster, there isn't one guy I'm confident in as a "go to scorer." Tucker fits that.

Preston. Kid is a beast and would fit the need above and more. Can really play a point forward so he helps in multiple spots on both ends. Preston would be a serious haul and would change things. Still up in the air if he makes it to college, but he's been on campus and you just recruit like he'll be eligible at this point.

Bamba/Richards/ etc... I don't think IU is in it for these guys. Richards is going to UK. Bamba, who knows but I question how much IU is recruiting Bamba. Frankly, I don't think they need the big with Moore in the fold..

Diallo is a spring or straight to the NBA. Other than that I'd expect some new names to emerge for the second signing period and grad transfers.

Thanks for the update! Yeah I definitely wasn't trying to write off Wilkes as no big deal, I understand that's a huge miss.

Trying to guess on some new names that could pop up:

Jacob Epperson we have heard before

Nojel Eastern? Seems like probably headed to Michigan State

Andre Rafus? Weren't we in contact a few years ago?

Anthony Mack hasn't committed yet.

Would they take Zach Gunn? Hope not

Can't really think of anyone else

Where's epperson leaning. Pretty highly rated recruit haven't heard much about him though?

I don't see the staff not recruiting all winter though, so I would assume some names start popping up soon.

They better keep recruiting otherwise I fear the desperation heave of a scholly into the air come next summer and Priller/April 2.0.    Maybe we should have paid a little more attention to Jack Nunge from southern Indiana who signed with Iowa.  Ah, second guessing - I love it!  LOL

As far as the grad transfer route I dont want to count on that. Max was a good add but weve missed on a few of those as well. And you never who is available til late.

Agree. This makes me nervous. it's like playing the lottery, which most times I lose......

Seems to me that grad transfers have to be a really special type to get established in a hurry to make an impact.

They are bonus material. Build your program to compete. If someone becomes available that fits your need then scoop them up and bring them in the family but don't count on them to be there.

So how far does a down year set the program back if we can't be competitive next year?

Not all that much, but it would not be enjoyable, would hurt a bit, and would re-ignite the fanbase's collective hand-wringing.

Id ask how it would hurt recruiting but apparently that doesn't matter?

Not that much

Or can we be competitive with the group we will be taking into next year?

YES! DDavis, Juwan, CuJo, RoJo, Devonte, Josh N, Freddie, Justin Smith, Clifton Moore. That appears to be nine players with B1G rotation-level talent or better, and would be at least a mid-level B1G team.

I agree. That's a very solid (if not spectacular) group that will compete and should play good D.

As things stand right now next year we will need Davis to be an absolute stud.

Medium confidence that tucker(35) and beatty(95) will go to iu. Corey Evans predictions

Tucker would be a nice bounce back to losing Wilkes, plus he would most likely be around for a few years.

Wow I had no idea we were still in it with Tucker.

He's really good, could end up being a better get than Wilkes since he'll probably stay a few years.
