It's the time of year for unknown Bigs to start popping up. Manley got the party started.

How we can't sell TB's spot is beyond me. Maybe DD is that guy but even then we need another DD. Manly isn't DD.

DD knows he's our starter after this year. Not sure DD is leaving after 2 years. Harder to sell a guy on being a bench player multiple years

Cody Zeller #4 pick.  Noah Vonleh #9 pick.  Thomas Bryant a first rounder for sure and maybe a Top 10.  I'm as mystified as you are as to why we don't have more interest from the bigs to commit to IU.   Also makes me very nervous that we're seemingly dropping down the ladder in our search for a big (please not Jeremiah April 2.0 he types with a shudder)

DD will play a big role this year. Our next big man will be in DD role this year unless we get a stud, which could push to start alongside DD.

No reason DD couldn't be a starting 4 and Bamba (pick ur fav) be a starting 5.

I don't follow. We got DD knowing his role. Why can't we get another DD?

DD knew about TB and still committed. He will be a big factor this year and maybe a starter at some point.

DD becomes "TB" next year. It's the same sell to get another DD.

No it's not the same sell DD only has to wait 1 year to become a starter. DD probably isn't leaving after 2 years. So a 40-60 ranked player will sit behind him 2 years probably maybe 3 instead of the 1 year that DD will be a bench guy.

Ok we are just off slightly on our opinions. I get your point though.

My thinking is DD could potentially start still this year and very likely would if not for OG.

I think a Richard, Bamba would start next year along side DD. Gak sits on his own AAU team. He'd likely sit with us too and Duke or Kansas too.

What other bigs are we recruiting? No reason why a high 4 star wouldn't be competing for a starting spot next year right away. (Especially if we lose TB and OG). No reason they have to be behind DD. 2 forward spots.

You guys just listed Cody Zeller, Noah Vonleh, Thomas Bryant, and DeRon Davis and then asked why we can't recruit centers... For a system that clearly runs more from the perimeter, seems like we've done pretty well filling the 5 with high quality guys.

I hate to say it but I don't think Bamba, Richards, or Gak is very realistic here. I wish one of them would come, but I just can't see it happening. I'm guessing Waters Durham Wilkes Smith and maybe a surprise big recruit or a grad transfer.

Time for some goofy stuff..

I was looking at the class calculator on 24/7. Now this thing is kinda wonky/inaccurate but it's fun to mess around with and project how this class COULD shape up and where it would fall.

For context on the scoring, here are some of last years (2016) class scores...

1) Duke - 70.9

2) UK - 70.58

10) UCLA - 64.91

21) IU - 58.39

Now, 2017 isn't finished so it's not accurate or anything but, fwiw, Auburn is the top class with a 63.53.

IU currently has one commitment in Al Durham, which gives them a 17.12

I added what I believe is IU's most realistic class in Wilkes, Waters and Smith. That would bump IU to a 65.36 which would rank in 10th in last years (2016) class.

Dream Scenario you add Bamba? 69.18 which would be 3rd in last years (2016) class ranks.

Add Richards and take away Bamba? 68.68. Again, 3rd in last years (2016) class ranks.

Sub in Gak? 66.58. 6th best in last years (2016) class ranks.

6

That's a top 10 class is what I'm saying

Right now, seemingly we have a replacement for Collin in Durham.  Durham probably considerably more athletic, longer, but not as strong or tall. But the intangibles Collin has shown.. Scrappy, strong, sacrifices every way he physically can to help his team. (How many times has that dude jeopardized his career taking hard injuries in practice? That knee in the ribs from Troy early last year probably felt like getting a rifle blast to the diaphragm.) He will need to quarterback this team next year. Anyways,

Whether Durham is consistent out on the perimeter CURRENTLY...

accuracy will go a long way when Coach Buckley levels you up.

I'm thinking recruiting wise-

1 PG (Waters Plz? Although I like Beatty too, I just think Waters will just fall right into Creans style like a perfect little peg)

2 SF/PF (Wilkes, Smith, Tucker)

1 or 2 PF/ C (Bamba, Jackson)

Crean can snag those uncommitted five stars in the spring too. I'm optimistic. Could be a stellar class

Roster balance:

This is something that came up a few years ago when we were relying on Hartman and Troy to play the 5 because of injuries and bad decisions.  If IU is going to compete annually for B1G titles and eventually national championships the roster has to be balanced front and back (class) and side to side (positions).  Last season was better with the additions of Bielfeld and Zeisloft as transfers but out of the 5 recruits in 2012 only Yogi made it to senior night.  This is a bit staggering..

2010 - 1/2 Sheehey --- Oladipo

2011 - 0/3 --- Zeller, Abel, Etherington

2012 - 1/5 Yogi --- Jurkin, Perea, Hollowell, Patterson

2013 - 1/6 Hartman --- Fischer, Vonleh, Robinson, Davis, Williams

2014 - 3/6 (at best) JBJ, RoJo, Priller --- April, Hoetzel, Holt

2015 - 1/3 (most likely) JMo --- Bryant, OG

In some cases it's not a terrible thing that they left early; Oladipo, Zeller, and Vonleh all went in the lottery.  In other cases it was just play stupidity or immaturity; Abel, Patterson, Perea, Hollowell, Robinson, Davis, Holt.  Regardless if it's stupidity, immaturity or something else in order for IU to consistently be good to great the classes has to be balanced.  This will be the fourth year that we've had a single player or less from the original recruiting class attend senior night dressed in a uniform.  I don't believe that contributes to a winning formula.

Guards:  Juniors - JBJ, RoJo, JN  Freshmen - CuJo, Green, Gelon

Wings:  Senior - Hartman Junior - McSwain Sophomore - OG, JMo

Bigs:  Junior - Priller Sophomore - TB Freshman - DD

This is a bit more balanced for this season but could get extremely wonky next season.  We are adding at least one guard and pursuing another guard; if both sign without any guards leaving we'll have 8 on the roster.  On the wing we definitely lose Hartman and possibly OG leaving us McSwain and JMo; adding at least one win is important here to have 3 on roster.  Bryant should be leaving after this season as a first rounder leaving Priller and DD; we'll need to add at least one big unless MSB decides he'd like to contribute.  No pressure big fella, you do you.

I get that college basketball is becoming more and more unstable with players leaving early for the D-league or overseas contracts and recruits are choosing to get paid overseas rather than by a few blueblood programs (that do that kind of thing).  Players are transferring at record rates and that's leaving coaches scrambling to fill roster sports.  The art of balancing rosters front to back and side to side is getting more difficult by the day.  A few things I'd like to see though

A big that might not see much time as an underclassman but is willing to learn and contribute little by little.  A big something to the abilities of an April but the patience of a Priller.  Manley's situation could certainly fit this description.  In the backcourt I'd like to see something similar with guards who are willing to play a little here and there and then take over as upperclassmen; CuJo and Green seem to fit the bill.  The same can be done on the wing.  Crean seems to be a lot better at keep the wing and guard sports filled but lacks the ability to land the bigs when needed.  I guess 2017 will go a long way in determining if IU is a contender in 2017-2018 or a pretender.
