Easy. Wilkes. But both would be waaaayy better.

I agree with Stu though.  We need Wilkes on the wing more than Waters leading with RoJo and JN still around.  If that happens we will definitely need a top '18 PG.

I'm still worried that we won't be able to fit a 5 man class.

5 man class includes Hartman graduating and Blackmon, OG, TB going pro plus a transfer. 4 I see easily. 5 could get dicey.

For that reason
Durham, Wilkes, Smith, (waters/another guard), and a PF/C is going to be interesting.

I think we are looking at a 4 man class but preparing for a 5 man class.

So lets look at this now that two commitments have happened. 

 

IU currently has CG Al Durham, SF Justin Smith and PF Clifton Moore committed. I was expecting a class of 5 but somewhat unsure now due to the CH injury. So if IU only takes one more, I would like Wilkes. Somewhat odd from a positional standpoint given team needs/expected attrition. 

What I think is more likely is that IU takes two more, a class of 5. So if they get Wilkes, they look for Tremont Waters at PG or Deng Gak at the 5. I think there has been some talk that IU doesn't need a PG in '17 and that may be true. But a sophomore Waters I would take over any '18 freshmen PG sans Garland. 

The other direction is addressing the big man hole that will be left by TB.  For that, IU has Deng Gak coming in on an OV so he is a possibility. Bamba, Richards, Preston appear to be going to spring. If IU could get Wilkes committed, they could hone in on one of those guys and really make up some ground with a focused approach. 

I don't mean to act like IU has Kris Wilkes in the bag because they don't. I wouldn't want to be any other school in that recruitment, but IU still has more work to do. If Wilkes doesn't commit to IU, it will be one of the bigger losses under Crean- no denying that.

With the addition of Moore, IU's class is up to #15.  IF we add Wilkes and Waters that would be a top 5-8 class.  That would be a solid class with what's expected to leave.

I'm focused on getting Wilkes if I'm IU. Figuring out a big/pg (waters, gak, bamba, richards, preston) from Nov till spring.

Sounds like a good plan.  IU isn't losing it's PG after this season.  Like you post earlier, get Wilkes and let the PG situation figure itself out.  I would love to land Waters but at this point with Bryant most likely gone after this season, landing a top big is way more important then get a top PG in 18.

I think crean is always looking to upgrade the roster. If a talented big wants to come to iu, there will be a spot. There are many things I worry about when it comes to iu basketball but scholarship numbers will never be one of them.

A sophomore Waters would be amazing but a top end big would do wonders for 2017-2018. How is the Garland recruitment going pap?

I know it wouldn't hurt to have a 5* wing but would it help that much? Is a top flight big going to give IU a harder look if we do add Wilkes? I think there would be playing time there with the ability to push DD to the four and Wilkes at the three. If a big doesn't have IU on their short list will that change with a Wilkes' commitment?

I 100% agree with pap here. Wilkes is still número uno. Waters or a traditional big as the 5th. Space will be there for a 5th if need. That 5th spot may need to be a spring type signing and could help or hinder chances. I say we go whole hog to get Wilkes as an early period signing though.

Loving the roster versatility of Wilkes, Moore, Smith. So much versatility with these guys.
