2017 IUBB recruiting

Recommended Posts

Re: landing Durham, Smith first

I know there was a recruiting shift after all the arrests and buffoonery. Quality kids like OG, JMo, and Bryant were brought in in 2015. The 2016 class included great kids as well. Is there another shift with the 2017 class that is more defensive minded?

It seems that both JMo and OG were lauded for their defensive ability as freshmen while Bryant took a little longer he defended better towards the end of the year. From what I've read and heard CuJo, Green, and DD are all plus defenders.

Is it possible that Crean feels like he has a staff that can develop players more on the offensive end? It might be a weak observation just based off one class and the projection of the following class but it would be an interesting shift in recruiting philosophy.

Have to admit, I love that 2015 class. Liking the 2016 class so far too (Gelon?)

I love that we seem to focusing more on quality kids. (Although we offer nearly every top 20 kid in the country). So my ultimate question is do we focus more on those kids or are we relegated to those kids?

If this recruiting strategy can work for us, more power to Crean and Co.

I would much rather win that way anyway.

Lot of commitments announced this weekend.

From Evan Daniels:  Closing in on 50% of the 2017 top 100 being committed. 49 players are off the board, but just 6 of the top 25 have pledged.

From Chip Miller:  Over the last 36 hours eleven members of the 2017 class, including seven four-stars, announced their college decision.

Might be able to land a big after some people on hot seats get fired

That's an unlikely source of landing a big. There's only a handful of players that get out of their LOI and Crean has never landed one.

I would prefer to land a solid big and maybe pick up a grad transfer.

I wish I were as confident as you about a top 100 big. Are you thinking Gak or one we haven't heard of yet or a Bamba?

Just hopeful thinking, not confident at all. After Thomas Bryant and the Hoosiers win the NCAA tournament, Nick Richards and Bamba both want to fill TB's shoes. We take Richards and Bamba goes to Duke. Calipara takes a job in the NBA and the pUKe program gets the death penalty and has to disband basketball.

Probably more likely to end up with Gak though.

Time for some goofy stuff..

I was looking at the class calculator on 24/7. Now this thing is kinda wonky/inaccurate but it's fun to mess around with and project how this class COULD shape up and where it would fall.

For context on the scoring, here are some of last years (2016) class scores...

1) Duke - 70.9

2) UK - 70.58

10) UCLA - 64.91

21) IU - 58.39

Now, 2017 isn't finished so it's not accurate or anything but, fwiw, Auburn is the top class with a 63.53.

IU currently has one commitment in Al Durham, which gives them a 17.12

I added what I believe is IU's most realistic class in Wilkes, Waters and Smith. That would bump IU to a 65.36 which would rank in 10th in last years (2016) class.

Dream Scenario you add Bamba? 69.18 which would be 3rd in last years (2016) class ranks.

Add Richards and take away Bamba? 68.68. Again, 3rd in last years (2016) class ranks.

Sub in Gak? 66.58. 6th best in last years (2016) class ranks.
