Summer Workout Video

I like the enthusiasm from the new strength; its what's to be expected. Let's be honest though. How many more wins is a gimmicky gas mask chasing each other around cones and bouncing a huge medicine ball gonna get us this coming year? Will it make us a tougher team? Will this increase the chance of injuries that lag into the season. My answers are no and probably yes. I would much rather see them working on defensive fundamental drills so in year 8 us alumni and fans may have belief we can play it. I understand Crean probably can't be there now during these drills, but an ex football player may have an idea of playing physical. The players also get the benefit of Crean not being there.

The "gimmicky gas mask" is an elevation mask that is used by TONS of professional athletes to train. It has medical and scientific studies to back it up, so definitely not a gimmick. All these workouts will only help them get stronger, faster, and better. Want to be able to outlast and outrun the other teams? You have to have the proper training behind it and that isn't only done on the court. A few years ago we wanted to start playing uptempo and being able to outlast and outrun teams and this is how you do it. From the look of these videos IU is lucky to have Anderson as its new strength and conditioning coach. A lot of things go contribute to a successful basketball team are things done off the court.

I think back to my sand volleyball days playing for my Wombat sand volleyball team!  I remember the challenges sand had over playing on a court.  Those drills that have them sliding across the sand are very tiring. You can't slide across the stand, you have to pick your feet up. Jumping off sand is not as easy as off a springy wood floor.  I like they are making use of the sand.  It isn't all they do, but I can see where it would have a benefit.

The returning players look great. Who is the guy in the black t-shirt?  It looks like he is in the back at times next to Troy.

My interpretation of what he is saying is that we could have a team full of incredible hulks and usain bolts but our defense will still suck. In order to compete for anything this year we need this team to make one of the biggest season over season defensive improvements ever.

Strength and conditioning can help but only if we have our fundamentals/positioning etc down. It's early in the summer but they need a ton of work there, gelling together to be one strong unit

You made a very good point about having to pick your feet up. The sand pit is an excellent tool for improving lateral quickness. Whats our biggest weakness? Defense! I'm not sure how one could honestly say that sand pit work wont help with defense. Of course it doesnt help defensive strategy, but it helps each individual player move much better side to side. That and communication are pillars of perimeter defense. I like it. Keep that ish up!

How much will that matter though if we are still putrid at defensive fundamentals? We need to work on not being flat footed, keeping our arms out and ball-you-man as much as anything.

I think HoosierTrav covered the flat-footed part. Arms out will come from sand workouts as well. The other, now that's the question

It is summer. They are limited on time and what they can get done with the coaches.  It is the best time to work on strength and improving vertical leap with the training staff.  You work on strength and improving your game in the off-season. Drills on defense would be part of that.  You are seeing only one part of the off-season work they are doing.

Goodness folks! The sand pit workouts will definitely help out. And IU Bud is right on the money. We are only seeing one small part of the workouts. They will improve the defense. Remember, we had mostly freshman out there last year who had no idea of what a Big Ten defense is all about. Holt will improve, RJ will improve, JBJ will improve, Yogi will improve, TB will need some additional defensive training to get to know what it is all about. We have no where to go but improve this year. I don't think we have anything to worry about except..... learning one or two friggin' defenses and drilling them, drilling them, drilling the team until they know where they are supposed to be, when they need to be there. We can't try 59 friggin' defense sets in one possession like last year and stick with it. Also, if we are a conditioned team, why not bring on a press as our primary? Just my thoughts. Guys/Gals let's not worry. We must have hope! GO IU

About 10 days ago I asked the following question:  "MSB is only seen standing on the sideline of the pit and in sneakers.  Anybody know why he wasn't an active participant in the drills?"

Only serious answers please which means you're out Stuhoo!  :onthequiet:

Pretty sure I saw him participating in sand drills in yesterday's snapchat story, but could be mistaken
